I once ran my own wrestling show. It was a total disaster from start to finish. The guys who were supposed to help set up the ring and the stage never showed, so me and my dad had to do all of it. We only had it about halfway up when the wrestlers I'd booked showed up later and were nice enough to help out instead of cutting and running like any sane person would seeing this mess. Then the show started and next to nobody came to watch. THEN the band I'd gotten to do a few songs during intermission decided to do their sound test in the middle of Warhorse (back when he was Jake Parnell) and Gary Jay's (still have no clue how I got those two) match. It was an all-around awful experience that wakes me up in the middle of the night to this day. 100% proof that I had NO BUSINESS in promoting pro wrestling. The best thing I can say is that I made sure everyone got their money. That shouldn't be a high bar to cross, but y'know, low-rent indie wrestling. All this is to say: I sure hope everyone got paid for this shit.

Honestly, from what I've heard, indie wrestlers get it. They'll help set up the ring, they'll help where they can, and many are just there to have a good time. It takes a lot to get into such a business. I wouldn't be so hard on yourself. That sounds more like a little bad luck, and not all your fault.

Probably in the post WCW era, yea. In the early ppv era, you'd see "super shows" at big arenas like Soldier Field or MSG. Those would draw huge gates of 30+k fans but would only get 20k ppv buys. This was the worst ppv I've ever seen. It looked like a big budget mud show. I was one of the 200 buyers. Was hoping this would be a turn to a TV friendly product.

@CapraObscura That's the thing. Wrestling exists in this weird realm where even though ppl know it's not real they react as if it is. So - outrage over Mitchell 'doing coke', where nobody thought to cancel Breaking Bad because Walter 'cooked' meth. But watching this recap, I doubt that's why TV execs passed on working with NWA; a controversial spot in an otherwise good show and it would've been fine. Problem was the rest of the show being terrible - it's what ppl who hate wrestling think wrestling is like all of the time. Also, watching this highlights the HUGE gulf in quality between talented wrestlers and...everyone else. The moves look terrible, botchy...that catastrophic combo of being both unsafe and unconvincing. They can't sell or take good bumps. And between this and current AEW, you can see how difficult booking is. No DQs, mad gimmick matches, no emotional investment...I don't know if booking is actually hard or just made to look hard when it's done badly. Or both. Either way, I can't imagine a TV station or exec in the world who would watch this PPV and think 'this. This is what we need to add to our programming'. Which is a bit of a shame - wrestling's great, but stuff like this is why anything not marked WWE gets treated like shit.

I wonder if some of the old guys still around could bring it back, Cornette, Jarrett, Lawler the Memphis territory guys had excellent work and booking in the 70’s-80’s some of the 90’s. Make it serious and violent, personal problems make money, make it seem that the people involved truly hate each other and are going to settle it on the ring. Forget the new style go back to more mat wrestling and less flying and top rope stuff which most people can’t do well. Second rope stuff and brawling not crazy techniques which has to be co-op and it’s obvious they are working together.

Cardona’s on this show and he and Steph De Lander did appearances for them this year. “Burning Lake Brawl”, the lore of Cleveland is that its river (the Cuyahoga River) ended up catching fire on several occasions.

I was a huge NWA fan beginning with the reboot in late 2019 up until the pandemic. So much so that I actually purchased the first two ppv's after the reboot. I started watching again in early 2022 when they started posting episodes on KZbin again. Primarily for the Briscoes honestly. I enjoyed the show for the few months that I watched. This is completely unrecognizable to the NWA that I was enjoying just a year and a half ago.

The "previous" iteration of the NWA was called the ... NWA. You know... DOOM, The Steiners, The Horsemen, BabyDoll, Magnum TA, Manny Fernandez, Jimmy Garvin and Precious, LazerTron, The Barbarian... the guys I saw when I was an adolescent. Anything AFTER 1991 was WCW and the NWA name was bastardized (even as NWA TNA) But "NWA" 2023 and forward isnt the NWA. Sorry, it just isn't. It never will be again.

The thing that keeps coming into my mind is... who is this for? Like, did he get involved with TNA and Jeff Jarrett and then just somehow couldn't get out of it? Who is this product for? What kinds of people are they trying to aim for? Because I cannot tell who their target audience is. Is it just a vanity project for Corgan? I mean, he made Tyrus champion. But it's clear that the only people participating in this show have nowhere else to go. And that sucks with some of them. But I do not know what they're all doing here. Like, if it's trying to be old NWA, it's too gimmicked, if it's trying to be ECW-lite, it's not trashy enough, if it wants to be generic indie, there are other promotions. ECW was filled with actual talent. Taz, Sabu, Dreamer, Raven, I guess Sandman, RVD, the Dudleys, Jerry Lynn, Justin Credible, Lance Storm, Shane Douglas, Mike Awesome. Even the later era ECW before it shut down was full of guys that could put on an entertaining match and knew how to wrestle. I think that Billy Corgan is bad at booking and bad at spotting talent. And I also think that Tony Kahn snatching up a ton of talent and not using them is hurting other promotions. I’m sure it’s good for the wrestlers who get to collect a fat paycheck sitting at home, though. If only we could all be so lucky.

This video makes me think the Mitchell Spot of Infamy was just the most obvious justification for killing any TV rights deal that may have been under consideration. If the rest of the show were different, it would've been ignored, but watching this recap...this PPV is what everyone who hates, mocks and belittles wrestling thinks wrestling is. And I'm confused - isn't Billy C's entire gimmick that he loves old-school rasslin - that he fell in love watching Superstar Billy Graham, Dusty, Steamboat and Flair? If so, wtf is he doing booking...whatever this is?

DDT is an example of how goofy gimmicks and comedy can get over and have shows be built around them. And at points, this felt like a DDT show. The women's tag match is literally just 2 factions from ddt. Although i will say, Clowns and ICP vs Vampiro and the Misfits is more like WCW
