Is this the datasheet you are looking for? www.diodes.com/assets/Datasheets/PI3USB32212.pdf Makes sense that it is a usb 3.1/3/2 mux switching device. Looks like the same series of chip. Found it by using octopart.com and then searched the manufacturers website. I'm guessing apple did just order enough to get a custom subseries of the chip for diodes to be able to track it easily
@equi-nox4 жыл бұрын
It's a PI3USB32224 on the board (which I was unable to find a datasheet for), so it's not an exact match, but the entire PI3USB series is USB switches (for different functions on Type-C.) So at least the function is clear...
@luciancucli53194 жыл бұрын
Nice, even the family model number PI3USB32 gives you a hint that is related to USB. If you google it, first two results are from vendor website. Unfortunately, some people are expecting for information to be available at a finger snap. It is normal for a manufacturer to take precautions and use custom design IC's or use higly available components and erase the model number and it is perfectly normal for a company to not offer you the circuit diagram of the product. Imagine that your company develops a board and in less than 2 months after release it gets cloned and it's available on the market at 40% of the price (it was not even necessary to perform a reverse engineering). Repair shop are just collateral victims.
@PsychEngel4 жыл бұрын

@luciancucli53194 жыл бұрын
@@PsychEngel I'm not refffering strictly to Apple, but this is a bussines model and is not illegale and it shouldn't be. The NDA is a joke. In my early example a NDA was signed with the PCB manufacturer, but somehow the information "leaked" and suing them would cost company a large amount a money with little success probability. It's a free market, you are not forced to buy a 1500$ Apple laptop, there multiple other manufacturers with home to premium/business family models. Nobody is forcing him to work on Apple laptops, but his business is based on repairing expensive products, he couldn't be charging the customers the same if they bring in a 500$ laptop. Please do not confuse this situation with the one that interdicts you to repair your own device at an independent workshop, that is illegal.

I've been using Linux full time since 2018 when i realised the writing was on the wall for Windows 7. I love it. With an SSD it runs like the wind on old machines. My daily driver is 10 years old. I've tried a lot of Distros but in the end I came back to what i started with Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. No point in reinventing the wheel - for superficial usage in the GUI its a lot like Windows. I get what you say that when you get started with Linux you often have to do some googling to work things out but now after 2 years I actually find Linux easier than windows in many ways. The terminal in Linux is a very useful and powerful tool. I find it quite convenient to just sudo apt get if i need an application. The more and more people who switch to Linux the better it becomes the more companies will begin to support it. My old experiences with Linux especially around 2008 were a little negative but over the years I had better and better experiences with it. I really think its matured the last few years. I think Linux is the future. I don't really see the Windows kernel still being around in 2030. Microsoft are all about selling subscription services and what they can sell you through corporate accounts and group policies and the cloud these days. Is there really any money in selling OS's these days and single licenses for Microsoft office every 10 years?
@PsychEngel4 жыл бұрын
2 points. 1. The more and more people switch to Linux, the more and more hackers will focus on Linux desktops and not only Linux servers. 2. Linux Mint is the non plus ultra of reinventing the wheel. It's using Ubuntu, which is a bad reinvention of Debian and its using Debian and most reinventing part of Linux Mint. It's doing, like it is Windows. Why the fuck, I need the reinventing (Ubuntu of Debian) of reinventing (Mint of Ubuntu) of reinventing (Mint of Windows)?
@zoidberg4444 жыл бұрын
@@PsychEngel Yeah - hackers spend all day beating their heads against the wall with Linux servers. What makes you think they will have a great deal of success against Linux desktop environments? Linux and Windows have virtually nothing in common. I know some users run Wine which makes their systems more vulnerable but i don't. I'm done with Microsoft and its shitty products. You can't put a price on freedom. Fact is Windows is yesterdays news mate - Windows 10 is appalling. It gets worse with every update and is less stable than Windows 98. Most Linux distros I have tried have been fairly smooth - I tried all sorts of desktops from Gnome, Mate, KDE and a few others. I tried various different distros from Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Manjaro, Zorin but finally came back to Mint - I just like it. My first Linux experiences in University were with some sort of bastardised Debian distro the University had installed on the machines in some of the computer labs. At the time I couldn't really see the point because as much as XP could be unstable my Linux experiences were "sub-optimal" to say the least. Over the years I experimented with Linux a bit - including Ubuntu. I'm not so keen on Gnome though. It's definitely started to mature the last few years. It's an exciting time. I can only guess you're some sort of PR guy contracted by Microsoft to try and discredit Linux users to prevent people from switching. I see this all the time on the internet - like if you criticise the F35 or Monsanto someone always shows up to argue how wonderful their shitty stealth fighter or GMO's and poisons are. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not you.

@royflores8504 жыл бұрын
reducing the surface area of a PCBA in bigger quantities of production leads to much more cost reduction than reducing the amount of active and passive components in the BOM so Apple is just cutting costs by cramming everything together, which is why we see really high power lines next to data lines which leads to these machines failing inevitably over time, its a win-win for apple.
@JohnDoe-jp4em4 жыл бұрын
@@royflores850 Pretty sure this wasn't done to reduce costs of manufacturing the PCB, in the quantities Apple is ordering the PCB (not the assembly) is probably like 10 bucks a board. EEV Blog debunked his claim that waterdamage is bad for the PCB because of the location of the powerlines.

If the chip number is correct, then the PI3USB32 is a USB2.0 single port switch made by Pericom. Its description is that it is for devices with limited USB i/o in their hubs or controllers. To me it would seem to be pointless because the PCH already has plenty of USB unless it's used in conjunction with other chips to provide USB2.0 compatibility over thunderbolt? It might be a kludge because of earlier macbooks having poor support for USB2.0 devices. html.alldatasheet.com/html-pdf/816240/PERICOM/PI3USB32XAE/298/1/PI3USB32XAE.html

@Cr0Lar That's why I'm confused, unless the Thunderbolt chips that Apple use don't have native support for USB2.0 and require translation from the thunderbolt chip to the PCH, or from the TB chip to the actual ports?
@PaulTheFox19884 жыл бұрын
@Cr0Lar The more I think about it, the more I think it's because the thunderbolt chip doesn't natively output or input USB2.0 to the ports, so it has that chip to translate the signals when a USB2.0 device is connected, it's the only thing that makes sense, and this would explain why earlier models had such poor USB2.0 support. afaik Ryzen has to use an add-in chip to use TB, and that it also also requires certification from Intel, which is why only a handful of Ryzen desktop boards have it as a feature, and add-in cards are hit and miss as to whether they work or not because the drivers are garbage on anything but Intel chipsets. Thunderbolt is an utter mess, nice features and all, but it seems it was designed by gorillas smashing grapefruits and shit against a wall and using the result as the final design.

Serious question, I hate apple but I need a new laptop... What do you recommend brand wise? So it can be repaired is something fails...I will support any company out there helping people like you.... I repair electronic equipment in the medical/research industry in Australia, and I go out of my way to ensure customers dont purchase certain brands as it makes my life a c#$@ to repair them (same situation you are having here)

do people know shops that build pcs or hackintoshes in the nj/ny area? I might be switching from apple but dont have the knowledge of motherboards and solid dependable builds ETC. I write music and just want something that works without worrying about updates that can ruin compatibility with hardware/sofware, I feel apple his this issue but im not sure, I havent used windows in about a decade so I dont know what common issues windows has. Im not trying to spend 3 grand for a reburbished apple product if its going to continue to make compatibility hard and also have buggy OS but tbh , is windows even better ?
