It has been speculated that the T2 chip was made to defeat Hackintoshes. Looks to me like the T2 is another point of failure in more ways than one!

I see Louis used a fix I messaged on stream live chat AND e-mailed him about a few months ago :-). Louis didn't believe me Dx. I've been having to re-flash the T2 chips on many machines to revive them after failed software updates, and to make Command + Option + R actually work right and install Catalina on a machine that came with Mojave or High Sierra out of the box. What a pain. About 95% of my cases have not involved losing data on the machine. The rest rendered the machine needing an OS re-install. Louis, for the DFU restore, once the Mac begins showing the Apple logo with the loading bar, then reboots and shows a loading bar with time remaining, you can unplug the USB/Thunderbolt cable. The machine does not need to be tethered to complete the pending OS update. Apple Configuration 2 doesn't get signaled that the T2 chip has actually rebooted with the LATEST firmware, and thus times out. Also... the charging cable the Mac comes with works fine as the DFU process runs over USB 2.0. You don't need to buy another cable. If Apple were smart, they would make the T2 chip be capable of re-flashing itself through Internet Recovery. So their machines don't brick like this. Or you know... do what everyone else does and have a read-only backup boot partition for booting off of in emergencies.

@@ΝίκοςΒουγογιαννόπουλος I know very little about why it happens. Other than it being caused by OS updates. Apple doesn't seem to have built in enough redundancy into the T2 chip to keep the issue from happening. I mean. Most modern BIOS have backup boot blocks in case of a bad flash.
@dennis_johnson

I'm in a similar situation with a bricked a1989. Tried to re-flash with Configurator2, but the dead MacBook is not recognised on the tool. The host MacBook (mid-2012) is running Catalina 10.15.7, so I'm not sure if there is a compatibility issue with that.
@SGCSmith
@SGCSmith 3 жыл бұрын
@@dennis_johnson In theory the DFU mode should work regardless of what is on the SSD, as the code for that lives in the ROM inside the T2. In some cases I've had Macs go brain dead and fail to turn on even after performing an SMC reset. Just like this even. If you have the tools to open the Mac and disconnect the battery for a few minutes, do that and then see if you can enter DFU mode. Or if the machine turns on normally afterwards. But yeah, new year, newly released OS, once again the bricked T2 chips show up.

I repaired hundreds of failed bios-es on PC and almost always I was able to do it with simple dual bios/USB/floppy/cd methods. Just in handful occasions I need to use external flashing with donor board and hot-swapping. This Apple method isn't so bad in comparison to older pc ways but on modern PC MBs dedicated USB port with a flash button is a king.

After force quitting Apple Configurator see if it has its save state in libraries. Delete the file and start AC again. Should work without a reboot. Tell me if it worked. (Also say hi to Kris!)

So when your repairing a mac with corrosion, is that because the user is drinking stuff right over that mac and spill onto it.?!!!! Also, what is the usb charger that your using to measure voltage?

Great info. Thank you for sharing. What if T2 chip dies. Is it possible to replace it and reconfigure it with that software? Is it possible to make a dump file of t2 chip?

If a 13inc macbook pro fan trotting noisily. What could be the cause? Even when only surfing on web, it throttles after a while. Any advise? Did a check and all looks normal.

Apple logic: failed bios update equals 12 dollar cable plus a 1000+ dollar MAC to fix it PC logic: failed bios update equals 8 dollar 16GB USB plus a cheap-ass keyboard for control Can please someone explain to me WHY PEOPLE STILL DEFEND THIS?!!!! Fixing the corrupt bios on any motherboard was simplified over 8 years ago, Apple essentially is going backwards on simplicity by 8year margin, over pricing for repair for a problem that even a toddler can fix and people still decent this practice.

Maybe because it is so professional to repair MacBook using another MacBook. I can repair all BIOS/UEFI issues using £35 computer with £8 cable, which turns out into fully glorified programmer.

No this is a lot easier than fixing bios in PCs. Most of them dont have safety measures like that and if bios update fails it fails and you get a brick which can be reprogrammed using a programmer. This requires teardown but this is very easy fix also I know there are easier methods in PC side. I use only PCs but i get the point they have.

@@felixgamingvlog6702 / Most enthuasist-grade mobos have that feature. But then, ASUS also check-sums their BIOS before post, and automatically recovers with compatible bios file if the firmware was corrupted somehow.
