I can not believe I came across this video tonight. Because I have the T4 and the Kelty. Tomorrow I had plans to set up the T4 and to figure out a way to use the Kelty as a front awning to the T4. Heck, you just did the thinking for me. Bravo! Thanks for the help!

I've had a Gazelle T4 Hub for some years. Been all around Outback Australia with it in my 4WD. T4 is designed for strength in adverse conditions, as well as ease of use. It's awesome. What you got here is a potentially disasterous windsail with extra work. If you need a covered shelter near your Gazelle bedroom, there are better free-standing gazebo options that don't compromise T4 integrity. But I don't use those, either. My 4WD set-up includes a 270° rooftop awning. I park the vehicle as a windbrake, then put up the 270° rooftop awning. The awning has drop down support poles with built-in anchorage points at their base, as well as tie-down ropes and shelter side walls. Then I set-up my T4 sheltered by the 4WD and the 270° awning with side walls. It works for me.

Hello, I am jealous! I have seeen a bunch of Austrailian video and would love to experience it there. Sounds like you have a great and secure setup. I watch the weather and radar pretty close when out there and will take precautions should it get crazy windy, your right - don't want a sail! Thanks for watching!

It’s just so practical. So many different ways to use the Kelly Backroads. So much better than those permanently attached outrageously priced batwing awnings and other permanent awnings IMHO. Thank you for sharing your great idea with us.😊

Wow! This was such a practical how to video!! Love it! I am right now pondering between the Gazelle T4 Overland and the Wawona 6P (out of stock everywhere at the moment). Would be nice not to have to fiddle with those long, bendable poles, but I love the vestibule of the Wawona. But with your setup, I can have a HUGE vestibule. Thank you for giving me something to think about-Black Friday will be here before I know it! 😉

We used a tarp between the top of the gazelle T4 and the rainfly last weekend. Temp at night was 20's and daytime was low 40's. Worked great. Will definitely try out the Kelty next time. The Backroads is definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear. Thanks for this great idea.

Hello, I was just contemplating a trip and the temps will be below freezing at night, so I will be trying this in these colder temps. (glad to hear it worked for you) I am tempted to add a moving blanket as well - I have heard others mention this. I like the backroads too. Thanks for watching and the nice comment.

@@ChristopherQuest I go camping in Florida often and it constantly rains. Do you have any hack to prevent the T4 from getting wet inside? I don't mind using the 4 poles but I don't want to have the poles far away from the tent because have i limited space with other tents around us. Maybe a way to extend the rainfly over the tent?

@@stevenscop Hello Steven, Wow, you bring up a very good point. If it is hot and raining - and windy - And you don't want the rain fly. I just bought a 6x10 tarp so that I could block more sun with the 4' extra. Keeping a blowing rain out, hmmm I will have to think on that one - let me know if you come up with something, I will let you know if I do. Thanks for watching!

@@ChristopherQuest hi, I only go camping when it's cold so not concerned about the heat but concerned about the rain getting into the t4. There are two ideas I had. #1 is to get a much bigger tarp and put under the rainfly like 12x12 size and use guy lines to extend out or #2 cut smaller pieces of tarp and use velcro to extend the existing rainfly. Any recommendations?

Pretty badass set up! I was looking at the Gazelle products but the storage size was too less than ideal. But I’m still considering the Kelty, your videos the only one with it being used while actually camping and with the rain that I could find.

It was interesting watching you, I do the same thing with my stuff. I have a Clam Quickset 6x6 & am getting the Kelty so your idea was the road to Oz I was hoping for, I couldn’t find any specs for the Kelty to confirm. Thanks for the info. Maybe a heavy thermal emergency blanket for the roof, so you can flip it for summer/winter use? The Gazelle is more of what I need now that I have a dog, so I’ll be switching my setup. Thanks again!!!

@@ChristopherQuest great hacks. I was thinking about getting the Arcturus Survival Blanket 5ftx7ft with grommets to put under the rainfly during those cold winter days. Do I need a 6x6 instead? Any suggestions besides moving blankets? Canvas Tarp better than poly? Also How did u cut the 8x6 tarp to 6x6 without losing the grommets on that end?
@ChristopherQuest
@ChristopherQuest 8 ай бұрын
@@stevenscop Hello again Steven, I would suggest a 6x6 and probably something with thickness under the rainfly would be best in winter (so canvas over poly in my opinion) The 5x7 may be short on one side, but will still help. Grommets are usually spaced every 2' but you may need to add a couple as only some mfgs hit the mark. I was lucky with the one in the video. Thanks again for watching! Have Fun!
