:20 Hard landing, yes? Bad landing, no. We used to call them, "Carrier landings." Based on his crab angle and the sound of the wind, that was a well-executed carrier landing, i.e., just get it on the deck!

Yep. Well-executed firm landing that's carrier-style. The pilot didn't forget to flare because the aircraft was flared already.

With that strong crosswind, this was a textbook landing! Great crew control & appropriate application of nearly "EP" flying!

Yes, my thoughts exactly! That was a very strong x-wind landing, plus considering the size/height of that beast, if he kicked the rudder over from the 35+ degree crab to perform a normal flare, he would have drifted off the side of the runway before his nose was pointing down the centerline! I couldn't have landed better! (Obviously a title from a non-pilot)

@@anthonyd5189 I just looked it up, and A380's are certified to stop with 2150m of runway. So basically, if they had floated for more than 3 seconds above the beginning of the runway (where you don't want to touch down anyways) without all wheels on the ground and engines flipped, they'd be at danger of running off the runway unless A380's have emergency stop procedures that I'm not able to find from a quick google search.

Another example of 3 Minutes of Aviation using a sensationalistic title to attract clicks. They don't care about accuracy, they only care about view revenue 💲. The A380 landing showed an aircraft completely in control and piloted well. THE PILOT DID NOT FORGET TO FLARE. What is happening here is the combination of a strong crosswind and a short runway. The pilot knows he has around 5,000 ft of runway to stop the near 400 tonne (870,000 lbs) of aircraft in. Due to wing area, A380s drift easily on landing, the pilot needed the aircraft on the runway at the touch down point and decelerating, there was no room for drifting. Hence placing the aircraft down firmly. Worth noting this is a 14 year old video and the aircraft is one of the original test/demo A380s being flown by an Airbus A380 test pilot. This was not a passenger service.
@seegurke93
@seegurke93 Жыл бұрын
in very hard crosswind, short or narrow runways and when its wet, you should do a firm landing to get rid of the lift force as fast as possible in order to ensure that you have your aircraft on the ground and especially in the touchdown zone. I give the guys the benefit of the doubt and think that this is what they tried. its not about a "nice" landing, its about a landing in the touchdownzone. BTW so many PAX talking about "nice" landing dont have any clue about what they are talking about. We do it every day and they fly once in a year and have an opinion. everyone is a critique nowadays i guess.

Another misleading description.. that A380 was not a missed flare, he had to put it down firm and fast with that short and small of a runway in heavy crosswinds. His engines were hanging over the grass for crying out loud. Was well done, not an error.

No he clearly flared but he ensured he had a decisive TD on the numbers because he was runway limited. It was not the time to get a greaser. There was a slight PIO on the decrab. The wing flex made it look like it was harder than it was

This was about ground effect [that cushion of air within 1/3 W/S] and it usually is very reliable with big flaps like the A380 has, but in a significant crosswind it is not reliable at all. First A380. This landing may be intentionally without flare. During a crosswind landing may be pilot decided to get a best grip to a runway. The pilot just selected less comfort for passengers (if it was not a cargo plane), but more safe variant to land in this particular weather and situation.

More inaccurate captions continuing to demonstrate the lack of aviation knowledge of the creator. A difficult crosswind landing DOES NOT constitute an error by the pilot or a heavy landing. The A380 landing was reasonably normal under the circumstances and considering the aircraft's weight. As for the so called flares from the Su-22, they were nothing but ground launched pyrotechnics done for effect. Any simple Google search will produce plenty of videos of REAL FLARES being deployed by an Su-22. They ignite when deployed, not with a significant delay, and tend to arc up and away from the aircraft in level flight, NOT DOWN.

An airline pilot doesn't "forget to flare", it is second nature to him. Something else is at play, like a combination of the crosswind (requiring a dedicated touch down), turbulence/gusts and what have you. You don't want the plane to float in the ground effect for too long in strong crosswinds, much to risky.

A320 blown tire. I've experienced the same thing on a 737-400. Kinda feels like hitting a pot-hole at 85mph in your car. Then a slight, persistent vibration down to about 40 knots. No worries. Most commercial aircraft are designed for this type of issue. At least Boeing and Airbus are. Pilots will sometimes blame the sudden "thud" on ground turbulence when addressing passengers, so as not to cause any unnecessary panic.

He was building a plane to do a front loop. I think the plane was painted yellow. At the end either he or his buddy crashes and is stuck. He yells, "Don't let me burn!" His buddy hit him with a shovel and knocks him out then he dies. Dude didn't want to comply with the new FAA or ATC. Does anyone have any idea the name of this movie???

2:12 Sad fact: the plane suffered a bird strike during this event and the affected engine needed to be replaced completely. Insurance covered the cost of the engine ($12-15 million) but not the labor ($250k). Since bird strikes don't normally cause this much damage, there is an ongoing investigation to see if some other foreign object might have been also ingested by the engine, maybe a small drone or some debris from the runway.

This guy gets a lot of the commentary incorrect. The A-380 landing was exactly right. Cross winds require a firm touchdown to get the landing gear planted and the airplane straightened out and tracking down the runway. Too hard and you bounce, too light and the tires scrub and you end up drifting on runway and have to initiate a go around.

@@starguy2718 Wait, I thought Caltech was in the US, JPL was in the US, and Aerojet was in the US?

He absolutely did NOT forget to flare. He (or even she) flared at the right moment. This was a crosswind landing test with the A380 Prototyp during the certification flight program. By the way: The so called "greasers" are unsafe and bad landings which need way too long a runway. Especially during crosswinds at the limits.

Small correction, it wasn’t a test, it was a demo flight at an airshow

Problem wasn't the 380 pilot forget to flare, they forgot they weren't flying for Ryanair anymore.

He probably just did a firm landing on purpose

he didnt forget to flare. maybe due to another factor like low speed causing a hard touchdown, but definitely not by forgetting to flare.
