A94 I don't want my scratch built supercar to burn! Heat management, with PTP Turbo Blankets

Years of design and labor up in smoke? I don't think so! In this video, we take a look at some heat management systems to keep the exhaust temperatures under control in the tight area under the rear clamshell of our mid-engine supercar. In this video we will fabricate a new set of Stainless steel headers, apply ceramic coating to those headers and then install insulating blankets on the turbochargers; blankets and exhaust wrap supplied by PTP Turbo Blankets. ‪@PTPTurboBlankets‬
Visit PTP Turbo Blankets website: www.ptpturbobl...
Read a paper here, on the science and benefits of using insulating blankets on your turbocharger: docs.google.co...

Yeah, the blankets look good out of the box. I just went back to one of your videos and see that you have the headers wrapped. Now, I'm no expert, but I have heard from the racing community that wrapping at the headers is calling for their early demise. How hard would it be to remove the headers? What do you think about using a direct contact high temperature insulation to keep the heat in the exhaust tubing? Like Heatshield Products 800102 for example.
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 8 ай бұрын
I know Heatshield has a product that has an adhesive on the back, which would be good for attaching to the "cold side" item you want to protect, while leaving the heat source open. The products work the same way and use the same basalt fiber, Heatshield of course has the aluminum backing that would add some radiant heat reflection.

Hi! Nice project and videos! Does the oil feed for the turbo needs to be on the top and the return line on the bottom? Please verify this with the turbo manufacturer!
@BuilderCreator

There is only one port that connects to the exposed shaft, that port has a fitting (as it came from the factory) that feeds oil in and also drains. The two top ports are open into the same cavity with no exposure to anything that could get oiled.

some real nice work there - assuming the ceramic paint acts as a heat shield in its self (it does) can you not coat the rest of the turbo pipes as well, the ones you covered in PTP or could you have just used the PTP or both for extra heat resilience
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 9 ай бұрын
The turbos already have a ceramic coating on them, so the blankets are "bonus" heat resistance, we could say. As for coating the down pipes, yes I could have just used ceramic coating, but all I have is a bit of the gold color left, and I did not want gold on that side of the system. And at $80 a pint, I didn't want to buy another color (like the titanium color of the turbos and muffler) and the wrap was free, or should I say part of the collaboration agreement.

I am sure you know this, but you are using the safety wire tool the hard way. Make your loop, grab the wire a few inches back and squeeze tight, slide the lever on the body down until it locks. Then pull the silver handle (only the handle) on the back. Makes those really nice twists. Again, you probably know, I was just befuddled to see you twisting it manually.

No engineering experience here so this might be a silly question but do you take into account fitting these types of parts in from the very beginning of the project? Are you planning out having x amount of space under the hood to, say, fit certain parts in between others, or be able to stick a socket wrench in? I cant even fathom being able to do something like this 😂 so it is really quite incredible to me that people can

The design is 👌 but I must admit that I am curious to see where the exhaust pipes cracks form from over time. Heres to 2030! 😅 but in all honestly these things come. that's one advantage vehicle manufacturers have an advantage of is being able to make cast exhaust parts. All of us out here have to deal with things like exhaust leaks to our designs after enough miles. but with the ceramic costings and condensation relief, I am sure that you have granted yourself much time. i am, although wandering if that one pipe will drip onto the wrap placed at that exhaust pipe. Care to powder coat more of the piping prior to the final exit? Also maybe some high temp clear coats to the valve cover and intake manifold?
@BuilderCreator

Another thing big manufacturers have, is hundreds of engineers and hundreds of thousands of miles of testing before they roll a car out. Thinking of getting some high temperature epoxy and forming the new intake plenum out of the same basalt fabric. (exposed forged basalt?)

@BennHerr
@BennHerr 9 ай бұрын
A thing I have found on the stainless zip ties. The locking mechanism is a small metal ball that rolls up a ramp to lock strap in place. If you just pull on the strap and then release it, it will always be a little loose. If you can pull on the strap and then push the ball up the ramp (I use a small piece of welding rod) the strap will stay tight at the amount you have pulled.
