It's refreshing when people go into a show like this, an adaptation/remix of a previous show that so many people love, with open-mindedness, a willingness to give it the benefit of the doubt, to try to understand the reasons for the changes. To be fair and acknowledge that some things could be better, and to believe that they will get better in the future. Absolutely wonderful reaction to this show, my favorite from the ones I've watched. 👏🏼

@@tovolume You mean that movie that is a contender for the worst movie of all time? Yeah, it cleared that bar. No one is arguing that it didn't. It's still a poorly written and super disappointing show and implying that those who see that, just aren't open minded, not trying to understand the changes or aren't giving it the benefit of the doubt, is disingenuous nonsense. Yeah, they did a lot things right. There are obviously a crapton of very talented people working on this, which is very unfortunate to waste all that talent on a show where they couldn't be bothered to give it a solid core.

This is why you're one of my favorite reactors: regardless of whether you have complaints or what-have-you afterward, you go in and simply experience what the show has to offer. You enjoy what you're given for what it is first, and any judging for what could've been better is good-natured rather than expressly negative. :) ^That's something I feel is important, in experiencing any take of any material. Having complaints and issues is fine and all, but if it overshadows enjoying the good - at least, for anything that's not explicitly bad period - then it becomes too much of a problem imo (and can become a self-fulfilling cycle of sorts; if you go in pessimistic, that's all you'll really find even if you think you're open-minded).

I like that Master Pakku didn't completely abandon generations of tradition simply because of a lost love but instead begrudgingly allowed the women to assist the men as a first step. It works for the cartoon the other way, but is more realistic this way for the live action setting. The lack of color other than fire and water happens in the cartoon, as does Aang giving his vocoder speech and dropping into the pond to become the water Kaiju. I agree that for this version it was better having Aang's memory of Gyatso pull him out of his rage at the Southern Air Temple since that is where he knew him, and still gives that moment to Katara when it's directly water related. The tsunami is from that terrible mover.

Something to consider, yes Aang shouldn't have been able to hear Katara. But is there really any proof that he actually did? The ocean spirit stopped and let Aang go because the moon spirit came back, not because she reached Aang and he snapped out of it. She could have just been voicing her feelings out loud and Aang didn't hear it.

Yes, or it could be that the Avatar spirit could hear her because Aang favors her, but Aang could not.

Fan theory time: the avatar state makes Aang powerful enough to detect the tiniest vibrations in the air, so he was sensing Katara's voice with airbending.

I’ve watched several Netflix Avatar reactions and yours is the one I thought was most insightful with regards to your comments on the plotting and storytelling. The thing I appreciate the most about the remix is that there's now a reason why Jet was in the refugee port. Having him in Omashu and then having that city be claimed by the Fire Nation gives him a very logical reason why he's trying to get to Ba Sing Se.

I was literally making the comparison to the Harry Potter kids to someone the other day. If the first movie came out now people would be complaining about the the child actors just like they are complaining about the young actors in this. Just like Harry Potter I think with time the performances will improve. No one was outright terrible imo and Dallas Liu was excellent as Zuko. Also I appreciate you not explicitly calling out which of the young actors you think needs to improve. I feel so bad for them when I see people singling them out because I’m sure the cast probably checks social media to see how the show is being received.

Aang does channel the water spirit and become a kaiju of vengeance in the original cartoon. It was very impactful, I thought. And the draining of colour to black-and-white with the death of the moon also comes from the cartoon!

I really appreciate that Katara's speech about them being family with Aang is given at this point. In the cartoon it's episode 2 or something and always felt premature to me.

Zhao was definitely more of a danger and menace in this series than the animation and its proven here. Juat proving hiw dangerous an ambitious man with false oower cam be ....dude literally would of doomed the world for recognition and fame. I'm thinking Aang didn't water bend because they will need a time skip since the kids have grown so much in between seasons they will just say he learnt it then maybe. Which means Toph would probably be the only one to earth bend in season 2. Which I'm personally cool with since they only have 8 episodes to work with per season.

The part where Katara talked to Aang in his Koizilla state, I love the placement of her and the moon in one place, signifying Aang's and the spirit's "partners" bringing them out of vengeance mode.

It's fairly easy to break down and cry for an actor, but it's another level to act on the verge of breaking down but barely contain it with a faltering stoic face. Paul Sun-Hyung was fantastic as Iroh in a very different yet complimentary performance.

I have finally met a leader who is more of a narcissistic arse than Marco Inaros. Ozai committed his entire fleet to destruction as a "feint" while he attacked Omashu. It is no wonder that his people want to revolt. I'm amazed that his army doesn't stage a coup.

I love the theory that Yue would have been the next avatar had aang grown up in his time he would died around 80 years or around the time she was born. Maybe that was why she would have died without the moon spirit she was missing Ravva

Aang has not once used water bending on his own. Not once did he attempt to train with it over the whole season. Which is kinda insane to me we had more time and he did less training

Read the latest article by showrunner. He said aang's training was put on hold on purpose. They wanted to first let aang settle and accept as his role of avatar. He did not have any significant progress in S1 with waterbending anyway so they skipped it all together. They will introduce time jump which will compensate his training with waterbending and he'll be a far better waterbender with the opening of S2. This is season 1, not book 1 water.

Yue can still waterbend because the Moon Spirit is in her. And the comet is coming “soon” so that the show isn’t trapped into a timeline when they’ve got child actors who obviously will grow a lot more than the cartoon did. Kudos to them thinking ahead. I only wish my popcorn had arrived before todays episode would have been perfect accompanyment. Love you guys, love navs popcorn cant wait to get my order hopefully soon. Also overall i enjoyed this version of avatar, sure there's some faults and errors but over all it was enjoyable and worthy of the next two seasons getting greenlit.

Overall really like what they did with this show. I very much agree that the visuals of this were fantastic. First when it wasn't Katara who got Aang out of the avatar state the first time, I was worried. But we still got it. There are a few moments where I think I would have prefered if they cut it over mooshing it together so much that a huge chunk gets lost. Do either Koh OR the panda spirit. Now we did both but tha panda didn't get a proper resolution and Koh's was super rushed. I also thought they overcomplicated some of that final episode. It needed to be a special day AND a special knife? Either of those two would have been enough. But a lot of my issues come down to taste, some starter acting and some clunky writing that kept getting better. More of what they did with the fire nation, less of "look we got it all in"

I get why they didn’t have Paku train Katara like in the animation, but it makes her calling herself a master feel a little premature even if it is empoweting and bad ass. Katara don’t need no master. I also agree with what others are saying about Paku’s portrayal being more realistic in this version. Eway sacrificing herself and Sokka’s conversation with her dad after very nearly made me cry which didn’t happen in animation. And I’m glad they kepy in some of Iroh’s more iconic lines. This first season had its problems, but I’m very much looking forward to s2.

Great adaptation of Book 1. Is everything perfect? Definitely not. Some dialogue and exposition problems, acting at points wasn't the best, but they did a lot of things great and you can tell they were actually trying to make the best show they could, and not just do a money grab.

The animated show has been one of my favorites since I was 15 (30 now lol), so I was super excited when the live action show was announced. Started watching the live action show a week after it came out, so all I kept seeing and hearing was “why the Netflix show didn’t work. Why it sucks. Why it’s terrible. Not the same, etc”. I spaced out the episodes because I was watching it with my sister, and we really loved what we were seeing. I was like why do I love this but everyone hates it? Then I saw your reaction videos and you guys were having fun and not being haters lol. I knew it. Me and the boys are always on the same wavelength. Always so much more enjoyable doing these watch alongs with you guys and hearing your constructive criticism and appreciation. Can’t wait for season 2 and for Toph! 🥲🫶🏻

I think the reason Aang doesn't learn water bending is because it's setting Katara up to be his water bending teacher next season instead of Pakku.

@@KinsenkaAki The many things the show did super well paired with the incredibly low bar it had to clear, I believe, for many fans cloaks the absolutely atrocious to mid writing. If they don't at least fix the non-existent relationships within team avatar in coming seasons, which they might, but I won't hold my breath, I'm willing to bet the show will leave a bad aftertaste for many who now are defending it. Fix, mind you, not build on season 1, because there isn't any foundation to build on. You are right, I could just leave it be and not criticize. And let me just say, it's fine: I'm not mad, the show sucks. A bit disappointed, but also not too much because at this point I know much better than to get hyped about almost anything. I went back to the original for my 3rd watch and am loving every minute of it. And it's great, you seemingly enjoyed the live action. That doesn't make it good, though. But let me just say this regarding your response: Just because we can choose to not engage with something we don't like, doesn't mean, we cannot criticize or discuss. It is not only my favourite way of engaging with a piece of art, but I'd argue vital to integrity of culture and artistic meaning. Shows of this scale only being possible with much potential for artistically bankrupt meddling only adds several layers of importance to that in my mind.

I don’t like the speech Katara gives to Aang to make him calm down in this version. And this mainly stems from the fact that she says that they are family. I don’t believe her because I can count on my hand the amount of meaningful interactions they had that would make me believe this statement. What I do believe is that Katara may need him, because how else is she going to become a stronger water bender. And I believe this because this is what this adaptation has consistently shown. They don’t need Aang, they need the Avatar’s strength and power.

Just because AtLA is near perfect, that doesn't make it flawless and it doesn't invalidate the moments that are better. Sokka and Yue is better written here, Zuko and Iroh's relationship was done well, and I would say that Aang connecting with Kyoshi, who is basically his opposite, setting up his dilemma that will follow hik throughout the series was done better.
