My grandfather took me shooting for the first time when I was 8. I remember he handed me a little 22 Remington. Told me to "point it down at that stump" he helped me put it to my shoulder. "Pull the trigger when your ready" and bang my first shot fired. He helped me shoot for the rest of the day. He bought me my first rifle a 308 Winchester. Good memories! On Christmas morning in 2011 he pulled me aside from everyone else, told me hes got cancer and that when he passes he wants me to have his guns. He pulled a long box out and said "dont open it until I'm gone." The day he passed I opened the box, it was his m1 grand and 1911 from ww2 along with a hand written letter from my pappy. It was about how this rifle had saved his life and how he traded a few bullets for a can of beans. I still have every single one of his guns except my 308 which my son has now and I taught him to shoot at the same stump with the same little 22 remington. That man changed my life I couldnt have asked for anything more. Thanks for the read y'all. Be safe out there. And god bless.

We didn't get to spend a lot of time together as I grew up once he moved to Georgia but I adored him more because of it. My maternal grandfather and I weren't close until the last few years of his life, but he still lived with us for 20 years and that left it's own mark on me. Cancer took them all too soon, before I could fully appreciate them. Anyone who has grandparents, cherish them.

My dad and i heard this song for the first time together over the fourth of july, standing in a crowd of people yelling and screaming and talking, we both heard the song and listended carefully and we both were tearing up and just gave each other a hug, like the song sais, its not about what you kill with the gun its the experiences and centimental value u get from things like this. no matter how much an item could be like a gun, the centimental value for materialistic things always over rules actual value.

My grandfather was a fiercely intelligent and cold man, tough as iron and the patient provider for his family. He's in his 90s now and deep in the late stages of dementia. I was his first grandson, and he doesn't know me, or his daughter. Sometimes he doesn't even know his wife of 60 years. I found his baby footprints in a pile of documents sorting through his belongings the other day, amazing how life goes so quickly. One day you're an infant, next you're gone. Fast enough that a piece of paper can be testament to your entire existence. Things don't mean much, but I was left his old Ithaca 37- absolutely pristine as he only ever hunted with his brother. I'll keep it as best I can and send it down the line when I get old. Something to remember the old man by when his kids and grandkids are gone.

My father volunteered for Ranger training in early WWII. I believe he felt that the Nazis had to be stopped no matter the personal cost. He survived D-day and the Battle of Sar River. He came home, seriously wounded, but not broken. Got married, started a business, raised us 3 kids, sending us all through college. He never spoke of the 'War' to his kids but he clearly had been changed by it. Iam thankful for his service and make sure my 4 kids know his story.

My husband passed a little over a year ago. He was adopted by a man age 50 and wife 49 when he was 18 mths old. They were simple country folk and he loved them dearly. He called them Mom and Pop. Pop took him hunting and fishing from the time he was 4 until he became ill and passed. My husband didn't have any sons and the daughters didn't like the outdoors. So it was him and I out there hunting and fishing. My husband became disabled before his first grandchild, a boy was born. That boy called him Papa. We ended up raising him from 10 mths on. By golly, disability aside, he taught him to shoot every gun he had. He taught him to fish and to hunt. Always told him, "Boy, only shoot what the family needs to eat. There's others out there needing the same." When my husband passed, that grandson was 13. Papa handed down all of Pops guns to that little man. I feel like in many ways that song is about Pop, Papa and his boy.

What a touching story. I started hunting at 10 years old, I learned to shoot using an old 20 bore Fox Double. Actually my brother and my father who had learned to shoot in the Marines so you can imagine the gun safety lessons I recieved from the both of them, they taught me to shoot and be safe. I don't recall being told that if I was not safe I would pay dearly for it but I knew it was not a toy, I was walking the woods with the both of them from the time I was 5 or 6 years old and I knew that a weapon of any kind was not a toy if i wanted to see any of them I was to ask first. Then when I was able to get my hunting licence at 10 my father went with me and I was the only one in hunter safety course who through my own efforts among people of ages into their 50's that scored a 100 on the written test. Gun safety was the first and most important thing to keep in mind. I remember getting my first head of game over the bird dog ( an English Setter) we had just gotten. She was an awsome dog who was able to handle a covey of quail, pheasants or ruffed grouse and woodcock. She was a constant companion for me in those days into my early 20's until she wasn't able to hunt any longer because of arthritis she developed.

this song reminds me of my Papa(Grandpa). He taught me how to shoot a gun, he taught me how to fish, he took me hunting for my first time, and all kinds of other things. But now he's off in a better place, and I'm thankful for the time I had with him.

Today is my Granddad's birthday. He passed away on the 6th of February this year. I miss him so much. It's really hard to accept he's gone. I guess I just thought he'd live forever. If I wasn't able to see him on his birthday I would always call him to wish him a happy birthday, and tell him I love him. I feel like there is an emptiness in my heart right now. I just want to pick up the phone and call him like I always did. This song means a lot to me because in the week leading up to my Granddad's passing he gave my son a gun that was given to him by his Father many years ago. I named my son after my Granddad's father. I knew how much my Granddad's parents meant to him, and so I named my son after his Dad because I knew it would mean a lot to him. I just wanted to make him proud. I've never had my own father in my life, so my Granddad was the closest thing to a Dad I've ever had. He was such a good man. I miss him so much. But I know he's up there waiting for me. I'll see him again one day. I love you, Granddad! I hope I'm making you proud. Save a spot for me on your porch swing in heaven

It was actually my grandmother’s gun. A 30-30, that kept the creepers away when my grandfather was working in the fields. She was a pistolera in Mexico. Apparently, in her hey-day., a lot of fellas didn’t care she was married to a good man so took care of my mom and her 3 brothers and sister when a “gentlemen” caller came creeping by. Gracias Abuelita! You’re part of the reason I keep my guns clean, locked, and loaded.

This song took me back to when I first learned to shoot, first shotgun i shot was my great grandpa’s, and i lost my great grandpa last year. This song brought back all the memories of my early shooting days and it makes me realize how far i came in my shooting career. Great Grandpa Jim, you will be missed. It also made me think of all the times my dad and my grandpa helped me get to the point i am with shooting sports. Whether it is a shotgun or a knife, anything that a grandparent, great grandparent, or parent gives us, it means way more to us than it does to anyone else.

I was 16 when I got my Papa's 30-30. His daddy gave it to him for his 16th birthday. Then he gave it to my uncle on his 16th birthday. When my uncle was killed in 2006, the gun was given back to my papa by my aunt. On my 16th birthday, he gave it to me. November 5 will be 2 years since I lost my Papa. This song hits harder every time I hear it. Especially with it being so close to his anniversary.

I had to fight crying here. My grandfather taught me to shoot, to this day its a hobby I still enjoy with him. Every time we clean his guns he always looks at me and tells me that his guns go to me.
