That’s because for this to be executed well it’d have to have a message of some kind, likely about how the violence is not inherent in humans and how this didn’t actually help anything, the people in charge instead manipulate the numbers/kills, or something entirely different, there’s a lot to work with. But that would take thought, effort, possibilities of people have arguments about the message, producers being pissy about wanting changes. So much easier to make a jump scare fest with no voice.

The purge always bothered me because while the concept is like Aaron said, goofy af, if you suspend your disbelief enough to accept it, it has a lot of interesting implications. What if you were a cop? Everyone you put behind bars that had gotten out would be put to kill you. For that matter, what's happening in prisons during all this? Presumably the inmates are going wild. The guards would probably go home too, because they have no reason to stay there, so that would really increase the inmates' chances of getting out. And then the police officers really have to worry. What's about low income neighbourhoods or places where they can't afford massive security systems? I would be more interested in seeing an anthology of intertwining stories in a neighbourhood with more antagonists. How would life insurance work? Getting any type of life insurance could make you a huge target by your family, all they have to do is wait for 1 day and then kill you. However, if you don't get a life insurance policy and you get killed during the purge, then you've left them with nothing. For the same reason, ppl wouldn't get divorces because they wouldn't want to split their stuff or lose custody of the kids, they'd just kill their spouse during the purge. Probably the biggest risk during the purge would be someone inside your house would hurt you, not someone outside. Surprised there wasn't more intra family conflict in this. What about fraud? Like I imagine a ton of business tycoons are just waiting to move a bunch of their shit overseas or do some insider trading. Probably a ton of people in the government making good use of all the knowledge they have too. The job market would change significantly too. Any job where you interact with a lot of people automatically becomes significantly more dangerous because you could make enemies. Might become really dangerous being a high school teacher in some neighbourhoods. Do small businesses not exist? I imagine larger stores could afford to put in security measures to avoid catastrophic losses, but any small to medium business that can't afford that wouldnt be able to make it passed the year mark because they'd just get robbed to shit. A lot of these may not the biggest deal to the story but the purge just put in 0 effort into figuring out the world building. They seem to be operating under the assumption that its only 1 day, it can't have that much of an effect on anything, but I think it would probably change everything about the world.

not to mention getting a job in this universe, in job interviews they would have to make sure you aren't a big target for getting murdered because who would want to hire someone that can't come into his shift the next day cause he was killed on the purge, imagine all your employees get killed, now you're alone but wouldn't that ultimately get rifd of all the assholes? like the ones here have a 50/50 change of getting killed by their supposed victims instead and if they don't then they'll live another year but what about then? ultimately the goal for every human would be not to kill anyone because it gives you better aspects of life throughout the rest of the year, would you want to sit at a cookout with Bob who might kill you in 2 weeks?, so after a while only rich douchebags and smaller criminals would be left I can imagine that in this case life insurance would only grip if it wasn't the day of the purge maybe? i think the concept is pretty meh, I mean just look at those douchebags standing around on the lawn as if nobody could come up from behind and shoot them all dead in a second, in a scenario like this you can realistically never be the hunter because there is always someone else around the corner waiting to kill a random person just for shits, so yeah you can get away with murder but so can anyone else and they will take the opportunity I'm guessing in a prison they would have to put everyone in solitary confinement, since crime goes to an all time low prison would be less filled and people could have their own cells, it happens overnight so anyways inmates are in their cells edit: also what about like rape and stuff? if all crimes are legal than so is pedophilia, the concept is to reduce crime but it isn't, it makes it so much worse, you can't just say there's less crime just because you don't record it for one night, just cause you look away doesn't mean it didn't happen, the boyfriend would have never thought of killing the dad if this hadn't been in place, it makes crime worse. and while all this happens where do nurses go? they can't stay in the hospital cause there's way too many threats there, do they go home and anyone that dies because the were neglected just fucking dies? I think I remember that at the end of the movie there was a police car right away, so is the police at work all night long? do they also get confined? can't trust the other officers, you never know if they wanna kill you ugh, it's such a butterfly effect kinda concept, can you imagine the amount of cemeteries that there would have to be, and then all the suicides that come on top out of pure fear or because you saw something you just can't live with, or do they just incenerate everyone from the purge

I think you missed the point where it says at the beginning that said “unemployment is at 1%. Crime’s is at an all-time low. Violence barely exists.” Insinuating that the America has basically become some some sort of utopia _due to_ the purge. Perhaps in the beginning of these “purges” the cops, prison wardens, swat teams, fbi, military, etc already went after their “targets” (as they usually already have the upper hand compared to criminals. For example in the jails and prisons, all it takes are guns. They are already behind bars and can kill them all..making room for more people to incarcerate the next year. Military has technology beyond most people’s comprehension and can go after targets..the main thing that stops them the majority of the time is war-rules/law. Same thing with FBI/police/swat, they can go after everybody in their records that is still out free if they want to. I would assume the first two years of the purge would be much like a new-age holocaust. The movie infers from the very beginning that the purge is what caused the world (or just America..I’m not sure which it is) to become a safer place, so with the information they give, you have to use your information to deduce _how_ it became that way. Keep in mind, I haven’t seen “the first purge” (not the first movie but the movie about the first purge) but those are just some of my thoughts. You went into a lot more and I still haven’t read past your first comment, but if I get a chance after watching this, I will come back and edit this comment again to add on.

Every time I rewatch this movie or watch someone react to it I’m reminded of why it’s probably my least favorite in the series. Like if you watch them all together I think there are parts of this one that add to the overall story, but as a first movie or stand-alone it just wasn’t exciting enough to me. @@saininj exactly, I feel like you could easily remove the concept of “everything is legal” from this one and still manage to make a very similar movie. It just doesn’t incorporate it well. Tbh I think the part with the neighbors wanting to kill them because of their success with the security systems could be interesting, but not when you combine it with everything else and explore it from one single location the entire movie. A limited location works sometimes, but for this one I think it would’ve been more interesting if they had to abandon the “security” that they had relied on and that made them feel protected from the outside world, and survive out in the open like so many others had to. I know that’s the type of location the other movies had, but I think they should’ve started out with that and maybe done a more home-invasion style movie later in the series when we knew more about the concept.

The first thing I thought when I saw this movie was, why is there so much murder? Wouldn't there just be a bunch of rape? I feel like sex crimes would balloon. Also financial crimes, unless they freeze all assets in the US for the day?
