Terrific tip! I'm designing a character set and have been working against a white BG. The neutral gray is a bonk on the head, but I should be using the colors the characters will be against. I don't have the BGs yet but have part of a palette. I'm using ToonBoom so if my colors end up off after introducing the BGs it's super-easy to change all by changing the linked palette, but I don't want to get too far in getting used to seeing the wrong colors. I used to use a 20% grey card in 35mm photography. Also the eyestrain reduction in replacing the glare of the white screen with the grey is an important consideration. -changing my workflow, thanks ever so much.

Not to mention that the pure white background burns my eyes when I work... .-.

Thanks so much Aaron, that was another great lesson. May I ask: when the neutral color is so important for the work, why don't you set the color of the whole UI in Photoshops preferences and get the whole surrounding floating windows and menu bar in a similar color? Wouldn't it cause even less distraction?

Is there such a thing as Art God's? Or Art sychronicity? I just found a mid - tone sketch pad, gray, and was wondering what to do. Then this video shows up out of nowhere. Thanks.

Excellent video, very helpful. New subscriber. Like your easy going style. Aaron-would you say that the background is smack in the middle of of the gray scale?

Can anyone explain to me how we start with the grey background in the first place. I know everything else except how to actually get a grey background and I can't look it up online because everyone assumes we know how to do that shit
