Okay.. I am 13 minutes your video and I have absolutely no clue why you only have 35k followers. This is probably the best youtube setup I have ever seen. It's just so fulfilling listening to your explanations and recognizing how many thoughts you put into your setup. I'd say I'm at the beginning of filming, but the truth is I am not close to starting. I really like to compliment your video(s). This is top class and deservers more praise and attention! Keep up the great work, my "inner monk" just enjoys watching this video! Great notes and guidance on use of the teleprompter and a script. I've tried to encourage folks in this direction all the time. So many people just treat it like it was a seminar, lecture where all you need is "notes" and you just expound on a topic. But if you want to get something DONE and published, use a script, use a teleprompter, and as you point out, use the teleprompter well (font size and practice using it so it's less noticeable). That's how you get good turnaround times.

I’ve literally gone back and forth on what route I wanna roll with when it comes to my mobile multi-cam productions. I started with the slingstudio and it’s been my workhorse but wanted to go with something more versatile while leaner. Picked up the yolobox pro but it had some major limitations and flaws. I love the idea of the ATEM mini extreme iso for its strengths, but it feels like you need much more gear to make it work, but it covers so many bases. Really wish there was an all-in-one solution that combined all the strengths of the slingstudio, the features of the ATEM and the lean small footprint of the yolobox pro. Great video as always
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I agree the ATEM Mini needs a lot of extra stuff to use well, so it's not my favorite for super mobile setups. I do like the YoloBox Pro a lot, but I also agree there are a few things they could do to improve it still! I'm curious what limitations in particular you've found with the YoloBox because they are definitely open to feedback!

Thanks for that. I'd say it is one of the most useful videos I've watched. I mainly record lectures being given to local societies so I've got a couple of PTZ cameras and whatever powerpoint presentation is being used. As the program output uses picture in picture a lot (slides with lecturer in the corner) that's what I've tried to emulate when re-editing but I'm now very tempted to use jump cuts instead. Certainly using DaVinci's multicam feature will help a lot. (The ATEM's resolve project file doesn't even position the PiP in the right place - resized but it the middle of the screen!)

One more tip: use in-camera LUTS. I thought of this while watching your previous videos. With a standard studio setup where you can guarantee the same camera setup, do your color grading for each camera (and make all match) and then export (Davinci Resolve makes it easy) the in-camera LUT which shows the look via HDMI OUT. Now when you record to the ATEM, your resulting files are already color corrected. ONE LESS STEP to do.

@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaronpk I’ve been speaking with them and there could be a way to do it. If you record in camera as well as your method, you could swap the clips out with the 4k versions after you edit the 1080p. I’m looking at that now with possibly buying the atem mini pro iso, 3x bm studio plus cameras and a bm multidock. Either way your video was very helpful. I have a eerily similar workflow to you right down to the editing process of broll
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 2 жыл бұрын
Nice! Yeah that's definitely doable, but definitely increases the amount of time it takes to edit. You have to copy the 4K video files onto the main drive, then swap out the clips in Resolve. It works fine, it just adds too many steps and I found myself not bothering to do that. What I'd really like to see is a device that can record at least 4 4K videos all together like the ATEM Mini ISO!
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaronpk yes there is but it’s the 4k extreme hyperdeck which is way over my budget :) but like you I want an atem which can do 4k recording. I’m stuck with the new solution I think because I want to maintain 4k. Thanks again for your insights. Great content.

Very helpful video, thanks a lot for that. I guess a lot of creators (me included) are reluctant to publish „just“ in 1080p - especially if one has just invested in a couple of nice 4k cams. But I guess here the old rule applies: Better (easily and efficiently) done than perfect (4k). :)
@KathySierraVideo

This was exactly my reluctance. I just tried an experiment of recording through the ATEM and realized how silly it was for me to assume my videos ever *needed* the 4K for “talking head”.
@WolfsHaven

Just upscale the video to 4k. As long as your cameras output a fairly sharp 1080 or even 720, most people don't even notice. The other option is to use Black Magic cameras. It's an extra step when editing but when replacing video, it syncs much easier. Some people are predicting BMD will offer a 4k version of the pro and or extreme iso later this year or next. Maybe an updated constellation that includes the new features from the extreme. With the chip shortage I'm guessing it won't be this year though.
@rohela1122
@rohela1122 2 жыл бұрын
Just guessing but it appears that BMD cameras us programmable gate array chips, not custom gate array ROM chips. This is probably why their battery life is so horrible. The blanks for these cups are much easier to produce than custom silicon, and therefore MAY be more available.
@ranvierion
@ranvierion 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing, have you considered a sync generator to send a genlock signal to all the cameras each and have them all lock onto this master clock. So, all the cameras will always listen to the master sync and this will never cause drifting and makes editing very easy~ Cheers!

What are best practices for export settings since in this case I am allready using Atem's h.264? Do you export as pro res? I imagine you dont export as h.264 or do you? would that keep it as is or doubly compress? Also, do you use proxy when your editing?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 2 жыл бұрын
I do usually export as h264, and technically KZbin does re-encode and compress it again, but it's perfectly acceptable to me. Ever since switching to Resolve, I haven't needed to edit proxy files. I'm usually editing only 1080 source files and my M1 Macbook can handle it all just fine. Occasionally I do add a 4K file for the main camera and it still handles it fine without making proxies. If I were doing all 8 channels as 4K then I would probably need to make proxies first.

Yeah that is what I mean! If you run the HDMI cable from your computer's HDMI port into one of the inputs on the ATEM, then connect a monitor to the ATEM output 1, you can use the monitor as either the multiview of the ATEM or as your computer monitor using the "video out" buttons to switch.

It completely depends on the camera. Some (usually cheaper) cameras can't record and output HDMI at the same time, some can't output a different resolution than is recording, etc. So make sure you double check that feature in the cameras you're planning on using!

I’m running into some trouble with regular pc monitors not working with the atem mini. What monitors do work, and what is the term that i should look for to know is a certain monitor wil work? It’s something to do with accepting tv hdmi input. Thanks
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
I've had that happen too, although a firmware update for the ATEM Mini fixed it for a bunch of monitors that previously weren't working, so first make sure your firmware is up to date. Other than that, as far as I can tell what's happening is the HDMI negotiation is failing and they can't agree on a frame rate. Some computer monitors won't accept a 29.97/30fps signal at all. What's supposed to happen is the ATEM starts by sending that and then switches to 60fps when it fails, but that doesn't work every time for some reason. I think the safest thing to do is to look for monitors that accept 29.97/30hz input as well as 60hz.

I use the YoloBox Pro for livestreams when I'm on the road, but the ATEM devices are what I use in the studio. I wouldn't say the ATEM Mini Extreme is easier, but it is still the cheapest way to record 8 camera angles at the same time.

If I am only using the ISO for post production and I do not need more than 4 hdmi inputs, is the extreme iso still the better choice and/or more future proof? I will ever use the live broadcast ability, only the synced recording. Will I ever regret to buy the pro iso over the extreme iso?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 2 жыл бұрын
Other than the 8 vs 4 inputs, the biggest difference is the SuperSource feature in the Extreme. That lets you arrange 4 video sources on top of a background, scaling and cropping all of them. With the Pro, you can only scale/crop one video using the USK feature.

Great video Aaron! Given this workflow highly relies on the external drive, I have a question for you... have you ever run into or heard about an issue where the ATEM ISO won't record to the external drive when hitting record? I used my Samsung T7 one week to record a two hour event flawlessly, and a few weeks later that same drive won't work at all with the same ATEM. I've tried reformatting the drive, changing cables, factory resetting the ATEM, and nothing works. The drive light blinks but the ATEM record light never comes on despite the drive showing up on the multiview. I've seen others in the BM forums who have had the same issue with no resolution. Any thoughts?

That's very weird! I haven't had that in particular happen to me yet. I normally use the Samsung T7 and T5 drives.

Does the syncing only work with black magic cameras?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 2 жыл бұрын
No, in fact I didn't use any blackmagic cameras in this video. The trick is everything is recorded in the ATEM, nothing is recorded in the cameras, so it doesn't matter at all which cameras you use.

I have atem mini pro HDMI SWITCHER. Sir, is it possible to view pre-view of all cameras and at the same time i get program out put for projector or LED video wall? As we are doing with video mixture. If not , what is solution. ? Atem extreme?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 6 ай бұрын
There isn't a good way to do this with the ATEM Mini, that's the limit of having only 1 HDMI output. The ATEM Mini Extreme has 2 HDMI outputs so you can use one for multiview and the other for program out.

This is so so good! I’ve just purchased the mini pro ISO! Can I ask, are you just connecting the atem directly to the computer via USB-C and then recording to a hard drive connected to the computer?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Ай бұрын
No I keep the computer out of it as much as possible. I record to the drive connected to the ATEM which also lets me record all the angles at once.

Thanks! if there was an error or issue, is there a redundancy? And would an error pop up?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Ай бұрын
@@xanderneal There's no redundancy in that setup, but the "ISO REC" display on the multiview will start blinking if there was a problem. Usually I'm recording from a script so it's not a big deal if I need to re-record a segment.

Hello Arron. I do have one question. I have a GH5 behind my teleprompter but it has a somewhat blurry not bad but noticeable blur on Atem multi view screen. How did you overcome this?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk 2 ай бұрын
The quality of the teleprompter glass will definitely affect that.

I see you have your multi view going into a Dell computer monitor. I’m using my ATEM for projects with 23.98p or 29.97p frame rates, but I find computer monitors don’t support those frame rates. Does that mean you’re ATEM project frame rate is always 59.94p or 60p? Or have you found a way to get a computer monitor to display frame rates lower than 59.94p?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's really annoying. The cheap Dell monitor I have doesn't support the lower frame rate. I did find a more expensive one that does support it though. The other option is to get a frame rate converter to go out of the ATEM and convert to 59.97. I'm never buying this cheap monitor again tho 😂

I had this same problem and ended up getting a $159 UpDownCross HD. Couldn't really swap the monitor since I wanted one with a 12v input so I can integrate it into a custom case. Really wish more cheap consumer monitors supported low frame rates, though.

@@cletuswa And can you confirm the UDCHD allowed a computer monitor to display multiview, etc. from an ATEM that has it's system frame rate set to 23.98p?

Aaron do you have any fan noise issues with the ATEM Extreme Iso?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
No, it should be pretty much silent except when you first turn it on, the fan goes full blast for a few seconds. If you're hearing a loud fan you should get in touch with blackmagic support.

I am curious, this is a 27min video. If you had to guess how long it takes to write script, test the script, edit script, setup teleprompter, setup cameras, lighting, record, edit and upload..... etc etc How much time would that take 4 hours? 8 hours?
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
Generally it takes me about 10 hours from start to finish to make a typical video for the channel, but usually my videos are under 10 minutes long. Writing the script and editing the video are the parts that take the longest. Thanks to having the dedicated studio space, there is no setup time anymore. I checked my notes and this video also took 10 hours despite being longer than normal. Thanks to this process, the amount of time it takes doesn't necessarily scale with the length of the video.

@@aaronpk thanks for that feedback. Recording and Editing videos is only a part-time portion of my job. I felt that my workflow was too slow but your feedback has helped reassure me that it indeed takes time. I am looking forward to getting back into doing my videos on a more regular basis and finding a rhythm and workflow. I enjoy the channel all the way Australia.

Super useful description and workflow - a 4.9* video! And... I gotta say (in a way that's hopefully received as positive feedback): that side angle does not quite work for me as a general-purpose second angle and cover for jump cuts. It's too different so the transition there and back is disorienting, and it's sufficiently off-axis that using it for more than a couple of seconds gives an "I'm looking at somebody you can't see or reading a teleprompter" vibe. I'm not expert enough to know what the angle *should* be, and I don't think it's an angle you should completely avoid, but as your main second angle, I found it distracting. It could be as simple as the difference in expectations from seeing live TV performers who almost always turn to face the alternate camera. Just a thought...

I do video editing for my registered dietitian's plant based cooking demos. I told her when recording to start the stopwatch on her phone and to hit the lap button on the stopwatch everytime she realizes something is off and an edit is needed. This gives me a list of rough time stamps to go back to in editing saving me time from watching everything on that first pass.
