I hate hearing people say that "she's pretty, but she's dark". WHY DOES THERE ALWAYS HAVE TO BE A "BUT"? Another one is "Maganda sya, pero mataba nga lang" which means "she's pretty, though she's kinda fat" . 😑

Most people say things like that because they have deep insecurities within themselves. There's no secret that sun tan lotion industry is a multi-billion dollar company and most buyers are white pigment. Why? because they want to be darker.

I'm a filipino but mostly some people think im black, mexican, indian or somewhere between in middle East but it's just my ethnicity and most of pilipinos are look like biracial and also i hate to say this i remember one time in my school they often complement my hair and my teeth smile and saying how good looking am i but like even my personality and i often find it really offensive.. we already know that we ain't streotype in that way cause look people we all share feelings, emotions, attitude and clothing style too so we should stick together and be ourselves too.. and we are all humans and we aint like species and also i don't really find myself fitting in but I was born to stand out too... by the way i was only filipino in my class and I also do find speaking English hard too cause it's my second language.. (Pls don't praise me for how good am i at my grammar and words I'm just only fluent in English I'm just like everybody else your not alone not just you and me but speaking English does not have to be perfect)

I'm a Filipino. My father and I are sort of against skin whitening products. For example, filipinos are natural brown/tan. A lot of people want to change their skin color to white. Because having white skin here means you are beautiful! Filipinos don't appreciate what they have. They want to be like other people from other countries. BUT I'm not against people doing things for their own happiness. So i don't know where I stand. I believe that Filipinos are now slowly accepting their skin color, and social media played a huge part in it. For example, we now see models or influencer that are brown. Unlike the previous years/generations where every one wanted to have white skin. (3:30 am thoughts)

Forgot to mention that on Philippines television, the person who is MORENA usually plays the "poor" girl/boy character. Like what the heck. That's still a thing. It's not always that someone of the deeper skintone plays a lead role, well maybe except for Kathrine Bernado (morena, and a really huge artist here)

Some even don't only use glutathione soap, some use injectables! My mother and sister used to use a lot of whitening products to the point where my sister's face looked like a raw chicken. Her tzone was white and tender, whilst the rest of her was morena. I encourage her to love her brown skin constantly

Beautiful words! I think the whole Asian obsession with lighter skin comes from the influence of hierarchy. It sucks but, even in China, light skin was a sign of royalty because the royals spent more time indoors and less time toiling away in the sun. Hence the stigma that dark = poor. It's really sad but it's important to understand where it comes from. It isn't racism per say, more descrimination of class by color. I agree with you though, hopefully it goes away in time. Maybe when Abs-Cbn and the Philippine media stop producing ridiculous content for what they think is profitable.

but not all filipinos has natural brown or tan color.. coz most people in the philippines are mixed allready.. in our family we just only use body lotion but we are naturally born white.. maybe becoz our grandparents is mixed japanese and spanish which really common in the philippines.. and its true that most of filipinos are obsessed with whitening products, but doesnt mean they are racist to all black people.. the only problem is about filipino attitude.. they like to make fun to other people without knowing that they are hurting allready to someone especially to some foreigners who cant understand about filipino behaviors..especially on tv, or any comedy bar we enjoyed when someone being insult, we laugh alot, even the filipino comediane they make fun of themself too, just to make the televeiwers happy,

I just realized as they were growing up I was their “standard of beauty” or the person who looked like them the most. I’ve noticed that they’re wearing their curly hair out more and it makes me happy. They used to NEVER wear it curly. I’ve introduced them to your channel awhile back and they watch you all the time. You’ve helped them build io their confidence and I’m so thankful for that. Thank you so so so much

Growing up, everyone and their lolas would tell us not to stay in the sun too long or else we'll get "too dark". I grew up with hella Filipin@s and I was the lightest pinay in my friend group and I STILL used Eskinol in high school because of that toxic way of thinking. I look back at that time and am saddened by how much I believed that beautiful skin meant lighter skin, and being that young I DIDN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHY! Now as an adult, I'm realizing how deeply ingrained this idea is on a global level, in the Philippines, and in other parts of SE Asia. My friends now still want to avoid the sun at all costs because of that #internalizedoppression lol. I'm hoping things will change for the better, even in my small circle, just by having conversations around this. Thanks for your contribution to the movement and all the work you do! 🇵🇭💕

I'm crying. To be honest when I clicked on this video I was slightly sceptical: I'm black, you're biracial. I experience colorism everyday, I assumed colorism would have worked in your favour. I never actually considered that you might at all be affected if placed in a different environment and honestly I'm so happy to see that you've found one of your many purposes. It probably still hasn't sunk in fully yet but honestly you're doing a really amazing thing, Asia. The impact that you've made on these girls will stay with them as they grow up and experience even more direct discrimination.

I'm glad you're doing this! My ex-mother in law is so close minded and racist. She has brainwashed her son into believing that being very pale or white is the only way. She uses whitening face cream religiously. When my daughter was born the first thing she said was "thank God she's white." I hope one day she'll understand that all races and skin tones are beautiful.

I don’t know why people are trying to invalidate your experience of being dark skinned relative to other Asians, because you made the context of your movement very clear. I am considered dark skinned by South Asian standards, and the othering I face within my community is awful and isolating, so I relate to you in that regard and am happy to see the work you’re doing within our community that often lacks engagement with sociopolitical issues. Our experiences are valid and can be addressed while also recognizing the problem of misogynoir. Global antiblackness due to an interplay of colonialism and otherwise societally ingrained prejudices in the global south is arguably the root of all colorism. But erasing narratives (within particular contexts) because others have it worse doesn’t solve the problem either. The nuance of different, but also common, experiences of colorism is lost as a result. And in my opinion seeing this pattern of occurrence is nothing but helpful in unlearning our biases as long as it’s given context.

Anything not white is considered dark skin. Also in hidpanic cultures as well. Thats why gina rodriguez said her father wws dark skinned. Even if u are slight tan u are dark skin. If u are peach white to pale u r light skin there is no middle. To me personally I'm dark skinned asian so I may see this a bit differently but my viee is generally the same as asians standard ur tan ur dark but ur not dark to me ur light ish.

I remember in the philippines I was called “Black Beauty” because they said I was pretty, but I had dark skin. Having dark skin should never be considered flawed and you have made a HUGE footprint in the beauty industry proving it. It took me so long to love my “dark skin” aswell and dozens of whitening products later I realized my skin color is rich, tan, and beautiful and you have helped me realize that. Thank you! I love it! I'm not from philippines, but have similar experiences being middle eastern. I'd get bullied for being dark, used to see my mom using bleaching skin care evevn though she was a lot, like atleast 5 shades lighter than me and when ever I'd open up about this, my african friends would come at be that I'm too light skinned to truly understand what it is like to be black/dark skinned. So thank you for this video, I didn't know that the word colorism existed and now knowing that word and knowing I'm not the only one, makes me understand a whole lot more. It's sad and not healthy mentally and physically that asian/middle eastern countries idolize so much having white skin :(

When I traveled to Asia I was shocked to see so much “racism.” If you're from US or Europe, you would be treated very nicely. On the contrary, people who are from Southeast Asia may be not treated really well because of their dark tan brown skins. From China to Korea to Japan, dark tan brown skinned people are looked down upon. Everyone strives to be white- every skin product has whitening in it and everyone stays out of the sun. It was the complete opposite for us in the West, where coming back from a vacation with a tan was considered a priority. The Importance Of White? While visiting the region, I was always shocked to hear people talk about how ugly dark tan brown skin is, and how important it is to be white.

Im so happy you're talking about this! It's not talked about as much as it should be in the Philippines, so I'm so excited and happy that my beautiful morena sisters are embracing their dark skin. I'm Italian and Filipino, and I def don't look Filipino, even though I'm closer to my Filipino side lol. People think I'm either Puerto Rican/white/colombian but not really asian. Whenever I'm in the Philippines I don't blend in cause I look like a foreigner, even though I speak the language and everything. I look like my dad yall lmbo. But the one thing that always bothered(s) me so much is the fact that the celebrities/movie stars in the Philippines look more like me, than the majority of Filipinos. THATS A PROBLEM. If I don't look like the typical Filipino, but yet I see celebrities and models in the Philippines that look more like me, and not like my full Filipino brothers and sisters, that's a problem, AND THIS AIN'T IT CHIEF. Im not here for it!!!!! Ain't nothing wrong with being mixed, I love being mixed, but it's a problem when European features/white skin is being glorified, while there is a huge lack of representation with morenas/morenos in the Filipino industry. White skin does not equate beauty. When God made you with that beautiful dark skin, He was like yaaas girl get it, You are fearfully and wonderfully made! You are beautiful! Don't let these skin whitening commercials and ads tell you otherwise, bc you are beautiful. I may not be full Filipino, but ima be cheering on my Filipina morena sisters to love your dark skin

Im from Panama and in my country there is a diversity of white, black, brown, asian people etc ... everyone; my mothers family side is more from the Caribbean and they have dark skin, my fathers side have really white skin because my great grandparents were from Europe, so im a mix, but mostly dark skinned and my family always told me not to be in the sun or ill turn more bronced, and whenever i had a little sunburn they would act as if it was bad. I never thought much of it but honestly it really impacted my selfsteem and how i felt in my skin, i really hope new generations leave this stereotypes behind and love everyone by who they are. ❤

You don’t have to buy tanning spray or go to the tanning salon. It is natural, colonization has ruined many races and cultures, and we can’t based our self worth off their BS. God has created a beautiful spectrum of people, and all people of color need to realize their beauty.

Growing up I always knew it was weird that so many Filipinos disliked their natural skin color. All these belo, papaya, etc whitening products were a must have in my house and I never understood why. My sisters and mom just used it all the time and always brought some more home if we ever visited the motherland. They even had me using it too, but I thought it was whatever cuz everyone else used it and that maybe were supposed to keep up with being light skin. Later on in life I realized the ugly truth & its bc so many Filipinos are terribly against being tan. I was so lost cuz I thought being tan was beautiful as a kid and so many of our people are literally born tan, but my elders would constantly tell me it’s not a good look. I’m also the type of Filipino where I can either be super light skin or super tan and back in high school, my parents actually told me that I should ease it up on the sports or even quit cuz being outdoors a lot made me too dark. I’d come home and they’d either tease me or get upset and say “Ang itim itim mo! You shouldn’t be in the sun too much.” They also said it took away the beauty of being light skin. That’s when I became so fed up. Why can’t we all be tan and beautiful at the same time? What’s so wrong with being in the sun? Why are Filipinos so afraid of their natural tone? It really bothered me and soon after I began to notice it in filipino media as well. I even have titas that used to tell me not to get too dark so that they can bring me home and make me an artista 🙃 “Mas lalo kang magiging artista kung maputi ka!” The older I got the more I understood what they meant and realized how bad colorism is in filipino entertainment too. I also figured that this was a social problem after finding out that bunch of other Filipinos I knew were experiencing the same thing. It was frustrating to know that no one ever really talked about this huge issue though. This behavior was so normalized people just went along with it, but up until YOU came Asia, that all changed. I’m so glad you broke the stigma by spreading such a positive message amongst all filipinxs. You don’t understand how much we needed you. You helped make so many people love the skin that they’re in and you continue to bless us with more, even beyond your awesome magandang morenx movement. I really wish you the best in life girl. You truly are such an important human being. God bless you for being you 🇵🇭 You deserve all the good things you’re receiving! Never forget your significance, and thank you again ❤️

Filipina and morena here. There were some instances that I would hear comments about my skin tone, but I have learned to shrug it all off. Mainly because my mom was really amazing (even though she was shades lighter than I am) and would constantly remind me of how beautiful I am whenever she would hear me say "I'm ugly". I have never used whitening products (though I use kojic acid for my underarms because of a dim situation 😅) and I have always been proud of the skin I was born with. Thank you Asia for speaking out of this issue and I hope every morena/o out there learns to love themselves too.

Thank you for using your platform for something so wonderful. I'm Chinese, but from the very Southern tip of it, making my skin color darker than other Chinese friends, and darker than standard Asian beauty ideals. I've worked at a Japanese restaurant for a couple years, where my co-workers have told me to stay out of sun and that I look like I get spray tans for being how dark I am. Thank you for helping me to embrace my melanin and skin color, and congratulations on 300k subscribers!

This SOOOO exists here in the Philippines. I have many friends who have a darker complexion and most of them are going through a lot of jokes about their being dark. Sometimes it's playful, and other times they're just plain cruel insults. Some celebrities in the past even experienced this type of judgement from fellow Filipinos and it's just hurtful to see. I stan this movement ❤

I have two young nieces who were born a year apart, the oldest is 1, the other will reach her first birthday in a few months. My oldest has light brown skin and the younger tot is more "morena" that is consistent with her dad's skintone and mine. My family has varying tones of brown and as such, there is an obvious colorist preference among relatives to see that my siblings, who are starting families of their own, have lighter skin children because "Lighter = Whiter = Beautiful". You get the drift. Having had my own struggles as a pre-teen of wanting to look lighter, of being teased for looking sun-baked dark, and of being influenced by skin-care commercials to buy soaps because they made it look like being brown is a disadvantage, I want to make sure that my nieces don't have that same experience as me. I wanna be that uncle who will negate that lighter-skin preference within the family because there's nothing to be ashamed of. It's sad though, as being a brown male, I don't personally know of any other guy who have similar struggles but for now, I want to do my part in stopping that cycle.

This video is almost two years old, but I'm feeling called to comment as it's relevant as hell here in 2020. The racial injustice going in the US and all over the world is horrible and horrifying. Black people -- black girls, dark-skinned girls -- deserve to not only be allowed to live, but deserve bright futures where they are encouraged to love and embrace themselves. I hope that with all that's going on, you can come back to this video and know what an impact you've made in their lives. What an incredible investment you've made in the future. You can look at this and be reinvigorated in the cause so many are fighting for. Hopefully we all can. Hopefully we can all join together and continue to fight for the dark-skinned girls and boys who deserve to grow up loved and loving themselves. I wish I could hug you, give you the breath of life, thank you for being such a beacon. Hope wherever you are and however you are you can cling to this bit of hope you've created for myself and others and find a bit of peace.

I just started watching your videos and it’s just been so nice to know that im not along on this. I’m also part black and part filipino (ilocano specifically) and when I was 7 I moved to the Philippines and stayed there for 7 years . I loved the Philippines, yes, and I always will but the amount of hatred for people of “darker” skin ( which lets be honest, is a majority of people there) and if you have the combination of curly hair then it makes it even worse. I forced myself to learn the languages because I thought it would eliminate all that, it took me a month and I was fluent but to my dismay it didn’t stop. People even went to the extents of violence and it wasn’t a good time. I wished people would talk about it more, to know I wasn’t alone and I wasn’t the only one that wanted a change because in reality, all their hatred stems from ignorance. I’m so happy that you’re doing this and I hope you reach more people. I’m standing with you the whole way and from the bottom of my heart, thank you

Thank you so much for this video and for making this movement. When i was in PH this summer i noticed that all models in commercials and just commercials in general are focused on being white and looking western af. It isn´t a bad thing thoo but it just really bothered me that they don´t promote filipino´s BEAUTIFULL NATURAL TANNED SKIN. Dark, light, and mixed skins we all in this, we all beautifull.

I blame colonization. After all years of being under them created this mindset is that they are a superior race. They made us feel ugly about ourselves. This is a deeply rooted mentality associated with our history, but speaking out about this issue can help in creating a new mindset.
