That is one helluva wild sea story. It is good that you had a competent crew aboard, and I do hope one lesson has been learned: that a boat with either diesels or gas that has sat at the dock for three years, drain the tanks and get fresh fuel in them before getting underway. This is trip "for the books," that everyone on the trip will never forget.

Diesels are SO reliable and simple. Before taking any trip like that, I would have the fuel polished just to eliminate that possibility since it seems to be common.

Days like that just make you a better captain. I've been through some pretty nasty situations on different boats and believe me you learn very fast how to save your ass. Nothing like experience for a great teacher.

Thanks for sharing your adventure. If anything we all learned the importance of fuel polishing after a long period of non-ocean use. Sounds like something that should be added to an ocean preparation checklist.

I would be asking next time for sure, I had my fuel polished before I left on the loop and never had a problem

It took me a while to learn, but now I know. If I get the slightest surge in one of my diesels. even just 100 rpm, I cut them off and change the filters. Because, it's never going to get better, and if you let it go until the engine dies, then you're going to have to bleed the system. But, enjoyed hearing about your adventure. Last trip we made from Kemah to Mississippi we debated on whether to on the ICW or cut across the gulf. We ended up taking the ICW and your video sure made me feel better about taking that very boring route!

@@NoRegretsLifestyle , yeah, we were bringing a boat back that we had just purchased and I didn't want to take a chance of having a problem offshore with it until I was sure the tanks were clean and the fuel good. Otherwise I would have gone offshore, as that is a miserable ICW run. But, we even ran to midnight one night, just by getting on a tow's butt and following him. It took all the stress out of meeting a tow in the dark, just hanging on his rear.

You guys were VERY lucky. I worked the oil fields in the gulf for 20 years and I would have told you to not think about running outside during the winter months. The weather can change to quick and get FAR worse than you experienced. It is just too risky in the small a boat. I have been on 250' supply boats in the winter where everyone on board would need to be strapped in their seats in the gulf.

Interesting and scary story. I am also a bit curious about the encounter with the fishing boat. If she was off your starboard bow or was "engaged in fishing", you are the give-way vessel. Under International Rules, the stand-on vessel does not need to respond to signals and should only change course if the give-way vessel is failing to take appropriate action. Of course after your engine quit, you became a "vessel not under command" and the other vessel becomes the give-way vessel.
@jameswilliams1547
@jameswilliams1547 2 жыл бұрын
your right, no matter where she was since she was engaged in fishing, she has the right of way... until we became dissabled, and therefore had right of way universally... thats the regs answer, the practical answer is that if a vessel is hailing you, respond. worst case you waste 10 seconds for a dumb call. they didnt hit us but i have no idea if that was luck or they saw us and just didnt bother to talk to us.

Tell us about what you were trying to use for fuel. I can tell you that I will never take a boat offshore without a wing engine on a separate fuel system.

@@NoRegretsLifestyle That would be a great question for the polishing guy. Would be nice for people that want to check before departing on a longer trip If you are there when they do the polishing it would make a great interview. This is not the first case of this I have heard of where someone had fuel issues.

You can stick your tank with water paste to see if you have water in your fuel. If you have water in your fuel it will change the color of the paste. If you have water in your fuel then chances are good that you have algae.

I see you use the old smoker's rule of "if I hold the butt on the other side of the door it won't stink out the whole boat". I assume you checked with the owner before the delivery to see if they were OK with smelling up the boat.
