I used to be a theatre director, (and I lived in Italy for five years) and I can't express how moved I was by this incredible abandoned space!! It was thrilling to see, so mysterious, so rife with its former life: soaring music and long faded applause! The view from the very highest cheap seats, (what in the UK used to be called the Gods), was nothing less than breath-taking. And well done surviving the convoluted climb down! BRAVO!
@emanuelcarvalho85102 жыл бұрын
since you are from theater, let me ask you, what was that "hole" in the middle of the stage for? (12:50) I had theater history on college and never saw one of them, I got curious lol
@amberbuzick2 жыл бұрын
@@emanuelcarvalho8510 was this ever figured out?
@hudsonrobert492 жыл бұрын
@@emanuelcarvalho8510 I believe the hole in the stage floor was for, The prompter (sometimes prompt) in a theatre is a person who prompts or cues actors when they forget their lines or neglect to move on the stage to where they are supposed to be situated.
@jomurphy16542 жыл бұрын
@@emanuelcarvalho8510 Really fascinating wasn't it!? I suppose, because it had those small stairs, and seemingly open access to the stage surface, (so no hinges for a trap-door) it could have been for a prompt, as Lesley suggested. I'm going to do some research! Usually a trapdoor would drop and you'd walk off under the stage - no stairs needed!
@michaelpatterson58112 жыл бұрын
@@jomurphy1654 It's centre-stage, right above the orchestra pit, Jo. Originally it would have been covered by a cowl, open on the stage side, that hid the prompter from the audience.

I really appreciate you Lesley and love you because we share the same passion! I am thrilled to see these places that you risk your life to show the world. This theater was amazing. I hope it can be restored to its original glory someday. Mexico has three neoclassical theaters like this one that have been restored and are in operation today. When I see old architecture like this I like you wonder what life was like in those days for the rich people. To see an example of these theaters search Teatro Juarez, Teatro De Gollado and Teatro Hidalgo. All these were built in the Neoclassical style around 1866. Thank you for all you do and stay safe in your adventures.
