In the 50s cars started becoming affordable and available to every family. As everybody owned a car the thing to do was to take road trips. Couple's would drive to a gas station for an ice cream or a drive in diner for dinner and families would drive for a weekend away at a highway motel. This was very popular for two or three decades or so. Times have changed and no amount of fixing up can save the business. The family road trip to a motel is a thing of the past. Now people go camping or rving or they want an all inclusive water park hotel. Gas is expensive and people don't want to drive as far. Here in Ontario, there are many many abandoned roadside motels. They were the place to go at one time, but sadly it is not popular anymore. No amount of fixing up the place can save it.

Typical Motor-Court type for an overnight stay for travelers headed to the beaches. Stop, check-in, let kids swim, bathe and grab dinner at a local restaurant before bed and an early departure for the coast. Times have changed.

There's a whole newer generation for whom it's a novelty though. I like staying in motels, and I'm late 20s. Otherwise I'll feel like I missed out on something.

Enjoyed the explore . That would have been a nice pool. The child 's art work on the wall of the last room made me feel it was home to a caring ,loving family ....no matter their circumstances. We have a lot of old deserted motels down here. After interstate I-95 was built and by-passed highways US 1 and 301 , tourist traffic from Maryland thru Fla. along the old route dried up ...Hundreds of motels, restaurants and tourist attractions went out of business. .....Back in the '70's a local one rented rooms as storage units ...seemed like a good idea. ( Someone broke into our "unit" and stole or broke a lot of our stuff : ( .... Thank you for another interesting video Jay ....nice to meet you Adam : )

As soon as I seen the stuff sitting outside the room, I felt sad, and especially after you showed kids drawn pictures to their mom, really makes you wonder what happened to them. And where are they now.
@megapixel11185 жыл бұрын
My guess is that they were renting the rooms out as apartments, month to month short term, there at the last. The back side of the sign marquee says “Jackrabbit Flats.” More than likely, the owner ran out of money to put a new roof on it, and the apartment renters gradually moved out as the roof leaks and mold became too hazardous to continue living there. Then with no one left to pay rent, it became abandoned and decayed. It’s amazing how it doesn’t take long, just a few years, for a place to go down hill like this. Decay happens fast when you don’t keep a dry roof on something.

Still a cool little stop though. Back in the 80s when my dad would take me on vacations we would stay and these random really old roadside motels. Even as a kid I absolutely loved these places. Back then the rooms were all still decorated from the 60s and 70s. Old furniture, old lights and especially the old wallpaper, they were excellent!!

Wow that’s Breezewood we actually stayed there about 40 years ago on are way to Delaware. Also Breezewood wasn’t congested then like it is today, just came threw probably year ago with my daughter. Forty years ago it was mostly all Amish horse drawn buggy’s but the traffic has chased the out of there.

RICH DISCOVERIES thanks for asking I’ve been there probably 50 times it’s are half way point and we still grab a room to rest and freshen up before finishing our journey. I actually have pictures 40 years ago staying at that motel of course it was nice and clean then. Building definitely the same office right in the center like he said,that first part he said was new office added on, truthfully don’t know much about that. Over the years it just got so run down we’d stay across the street . But many Amish horse and buggy it seemed it was their place now you don’t see any really I’m sure it wouldn’t be safe with all the congestion I get a little nervous cause you best know what lane and way your going now. Doubt I’ll be that way again as my mom lived in Delaware and I went twice a year through Breezewood as she passed away now. But talk about beautiful in the fall gorgeous tree color, gee I didn’t mean to write a book. But that was awesome seeing JP there but thanks for listening..

It’s amazing how the exterior brick walls have lasted while the interior is total disaster - it seems to me that they could cut the interior and rebuild and get these buildings back into business. They could be homes for the homeless - it’s disturbing to me that so many buildings like this are abandoned and left to decay instead of being renovated . We are obviously a “throw away” society and that’s not good . Another great video J - thanks for sharing 😁👍

There used to be a motel like this one (all wood though, no brick facade) along Route 307 outside of Scranton. It was maybe a quarter mile up 307 heading towards Gouldsboro from the side road you come out of after getting off Elmhurst Boulevard. There's also a section of a similar motel near the bottom of the big hill that goes by the state prison on Route 6 heading into Waymart. Furthermore there was another one similar to this right across from the Little League Hall Of Fame and playing fields near Williamsport. Only thing missing from that one was the creepy old house on the hill in the back ala Bate's Motel.

Sadly these exist across the country. There is a stretch of these hotels along our old state route 100 near Pacific, Mo. In this case it became abondoned when the new interstate Highway 44 pretty much killed this now seldom frequented highway. The one featured in your video though old was a well built brick structure initially. Roof rot definitely took its toll on this motor logde.

We have a lot of state programs helping people in need - single mothers with children can get subsidized housing, food stamps and much more. I have not heard of nor seen programs to help house homeless people . States and cities can apply for federal grants too fix problems and money to do so . Our town got a grant to fix (?) a rotary near me - they spent 2.4 million dollars on the rotary which didn’t need work - 2.4 million dollars could have renovated some abandoned buildings and helped some homeless people get off the street - those people could be enrolled in programs that pay rent , get food stamps etc - unfortunately it appears that no state or any towns want to help - that is unacceptable but nothing is being done to correct that.
