Abandoned Airplanes: Bagdad Airport, Arizona, Season 1, Pilot Episode

Our latest adventure took us to Bagdad, Arizona where we make some very interesting discoveries.
Freeport-McMoRan Inc. owns the Bagdad copper mine; one of the largest copper resources in the world. Mining here began in 1882 and in 2016 more than 173,000,000 pounds of copper were mined.

Most airplanes rotting away at small airports are rotting away for a good reason. They may be grounded do to regulations and getting them back in the air would cost more than the plane would be worth fixed. There isn’t a shortage of airplanes, there is a shortage of pilots. I would love to become a pilots but can not afford flight schooling. And that is why there is a shortage of pilots... because it costs 50 to 80 k just to start making 30 k as a pilot. Solve that problem and you solve the pilot shortage.

@michael knowlden thanks for the clarification, however, the OP comment is still valid. Based on my research, the training from the Lift Academy (flywithlift.com/admissions/) will still cost $50K after subsidies and post-CFI loan forgiveness (after 5 years of employment) with the airline (I'm not sure if the $17500 sign-in bonus applies to Lift Academy students, as well as the $4K for each new hired pilot referral program).The minimums are still high (rjet-pilot.jobs/) so I doubt anyone will get their pilot career paid for by the airline and, even less, a $130K/yr with just 5 years after completing their training.

Ehh its a problem that eats its self. You need more pilots to make more planes, and you need more planes to make more pilots. Big reason flight school is so expensive is because plane insurance is so expensive. Unfournalty Americans like to sue each other and I think that is what contributes to the shortage. Most the airframes you see are flying beyond they're intended life span but its expensive to produce planes.

The owner of the Cessna 150 may have died or is sick and can't do anything with the plane! There was a beautiful Stintson 108 Voyager at a small airport near me that sat for 15 years and never moved. It started to decay so I tried to find out who owned it. The little airport didn't have but a couple of small hangars on it and no one seemed to know anything about the plane. Obviously there was nobody charging for storage at this tiny strip. I called the FAA and they told me I had to be a member of law enforcement in the area to get that info. I finally was able to get a police chief to ask the FAA who owned it and we found out the man had died just a month after he parked the plane there and he had no relatives. I own the plane now. Had to put quite a bit of money into it to make it airworthy but it has been worth it.

Law enforcement? Not so. The FAA web site will tell you the registered owner with a few ticks of the N number for free. Also, for $10 you can order a CD with the entire history of the airplane from that same FAA web site. The police are not necessary at all. FAA.gov. Now you know.

@@Jasshands1 Yes very difficult because I had to deal with a government entity! That alone explains the amount of Nonsense I went through to obtain the plane! First I had to hire an attorney. Finding one that wanted to fool with it was difficult as well. Once i had retained him we had to file a claim that required a search for relatives and anyone the man might have owed money to! Fortunately he was very clean and had owned his home an car and pickup truck. No payments or mortgage of any kind. The city had auctioned his vehicles and house years ago because they were sitting at the house. We found he had paid cash for the plane and didn't have a bill of sale! And since it wasn't airworthy it hadn't been registered in over 20 years. The best part was the City where he lived didn't have jurisdiction over the plane which was at a country airport outside the city. We found he bought the plane in another state and flew it to the little airport with it being registered. He didn't even have a title! That was really hard to obtain because the county wanted their fingers greased with money! Most small governments in counties and towns and small cities are seriously corrupt!

@@ltlwalt The plane had not been registered by the guy who died and left it there! He had purchased it with cash and flown it to this small country airport. I tried the N number and the FAA told me the plane shouldn't have been where I said it was and thought it night have been stolen! That is why I had to get the local law involved!

Hey Tim, Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I learned to drive and fly at that airport. Dorris's husband Bob used to run the airport and taught my father, myself and countless others how to fly he was there every day. Back in my youth, the airport had 5-7 planes there and was very active. We rebuilt and recovered my dad's Piper Tri-pacer in that empty hanger back in the '80s. My job for lessons was to keep all that brush down around the hangers and along the runway during the summers. Bob passed awhile ago and his wife I believe passed them along to Family. This video was last year and a lot has happened with the families of old Bagdad. last I spoke there were plans to get them flying again but I am not certain it has been done yet. Thanks again, I'm hoping to fly back into Bagdad myself one of these days. Landing 23 was always fun and the usual pattern with the wind. It's frisky because there could be an updraft as you come across the edge of the mesa on final! Love the channel, keep it up. Jeff not Syd

Do not assume owners of abandoned aircraft are selfish or anything else. The high cost of maintenance is usually a factor. Go find for yourself the cost of Cessna 152 Aerobat door hinges. It works out to about $13,000 for the set. Cessna do not want their old aircraft in the air. They never dreamed their 1960's and 70's aircraft would still be active today. Cheers

Laurie, you hit the nail on the head. You should see the strange looks I get when I discuss the pricing for parts and have to explain that the company that made their plane went out of business in the 80s....many seem shocked.

Been there.... done that. Owning a plane is sometimes cheaper than a car until something breaks. My airplane insurance is cheaper than my car insurance. However, I live in fear of something breaking. Repairs get expensive in a hurry. I am not a rich guy. I am just an average guy that loves to fly.

I agree with you 100% regarding the sadness/frustration behind people leaving an aircraft to just rot away when there are so many people out there that would love to keep them flying. At the same time however, I guess we need to stop and respect what could have been going on in their lives that can often pop up and not give them time to get rid of it. Aircraft can quite easily become "unimportant" to their owners when life throws them a curve. You posted this vid roughly 3 years ago. The owner of the 150L just passed away roughly 1 month ago at the age of 87. We don't know what was going on in her life when she was into her late 70's when this plane became abandoned. But we both can say we wish her family or friends would have taken care of it, and/or sold it when she no longer could fly/care for it. Though this 150L was not the only aircraft she has owned, we have to also understand that some/many people do not have the same relationship with their aircraft that you and I do. I'm sure we both find that equally as sad/frustrating as well. But it's true.

Yep. Please do more. Though I too hate to see aircraft in that state it is fascinating. I saved a couple of aircraft remains that could otherwise have been lost to the scrap man. The fuselage of Cessna 140 N76402 and the cockpit section of Ercoupe N3188H. Both were written off here in the UK. If you ever fly over the Davis Monthan boneyard thats a video I would love to see.

Stopped by the airport today and those 3 planes are still there. I remember visiting the airport back in the mid '80s on a family camping trip and I was more excited to find several old abandoned Willys Jeeps there than to see any airplanes. This place has been rebuilt in the past few years since the video was shot.

I love the paint job on your Commuter. Great airplane for training as well as cross country flying! I got my license in 1981 in the C150 (1976 Centennial model)..saved my life on one occasion because of its stability! I received my A&P license 5 years almost to the day in 1986, (one day short). I went to work for a major airline in Los Angeles shortly thereafter! Even with an A&P which would save me a ton of money in restoring an airplane I still can't afford to fly because of the high cost of fuel! When I was in flight training I belonged to a flying club and the cost was amazingly low, $20 /hr for the plane, $10/hr for the instructor! The newer C152 came out before I received my license and was told the model I saw cost $30,000, certainly not affordable for a lower worker! p.s. You might want to practice your approach to landings as you were much too high on the approach and too low over the threshold, according to the VASI lights. Just my opinion.

so i live in bagdad arizona and can tell you all about that 182, i know the owner, he wont sell and even worse it had a engine overhaul before it was parked in that spot about 25 years ago and never moved since then. also I fly my paramotor from that airport so if you see a paramotor floating around bagdad thats me, or look at my you tube page, ive got a few videos of bagdad.

You think the rotting aircraft here are bad, go check out Deer Valley Airport, there’s a lot more aircraft that are just sitting there abandoned. One of them is a T-33 Shooting Star that has been sitting under a covered tie-down for who knows how long.

I flew to that airport a few times when I would service the mine. The airstrip in basically in the FMC Bagdad Mine. There was an old Tri Pacer there in 2013 when I flew there. Glad to see that it is gone. I think there was only 3 planes sitting there before. I think the 150 was one of them. Some of the folks owned land adjacent to the mine. I would give them a view. One was in the canyon. Good memories.

A very good idea to donate planes to kids who cannot afford to fly. Unfortunately the purchase price is the cheapest expense, I’ve spent more on maintenance in the last two years for my plane than the purchase price. Not including oil, fuel, training to remain current. That is why GA is dying world wide.

This used to be just a soda machine/restroom and short runway, 3300’ back in 2010 when I landed there. No other planes or any buildings/hangers etc.

Had a Cessna 150 parked on the tie down ramp at Wings Field in Blue Bell, PA for years, tires flat, windshield fogged and scratched, and birds multi-listed the engine cooling intakes as real estate. I had no idea the owner was sort of a local legend: a weatherman on the local ABC affiliate killed in skydiving accident in the 1970s. I assumed the plane was going to be scrapped, but someone actually got it going, bought it flew it somewhere. That had to be a nervous flight.

I began flying back in the 80's. I could get a 152, full IFR, for 22 bucks wet. Archer, full IFR, autopilot, for 42 bucks wet. Skyhawks, for $36! Flew out to the west coast from Indiana, and back. Today, rental restrictions forbid that. A hundred bucks for a basic beat up 150, a 50 mile restriction, and no night flying allowed! I used to rent a Saratoga SP for 100 bucks per tach hour. No sense getting licensed now, unless you can afford your own plane! Who wants to go through all the time and expense even learning to navigate, if you cannot get out of sight of the airport? $250 per hour in Honolulu for a fricking 172! And, YOU think planes sitting idle are the cause? We used to fly to Chicago for coffee after work. That coffee today, would be a 500 dollar trip at $250 per hour versus $84, at $42! Round trip per head in "86" was 21 bucks! Twenty bucks is easy to come by. Lots of willing people ready to shell out $10.50 for an hour of flying. Not as many takers at $60 per head! Anyone earning less than 40 bucks an hour finds that to be prohibitive. Most trips are a couple hours, unless you stay in the pattern! And, with new two place aircraft costing more than many homes, what makes you think that planes sitting, are the reason for the insane costs involved? It costs a lot to remain proficient as well. the three take offs and landings per 90 days, is pretty lax! I flew with a lot of guys in our club, who would tense up during a steep turn or a slip. If one is not comfortable in the front seat, they should get with another pilot, until they are!

the cessna 150 was owned by james manifee and in 2013 went to doris manifee. we can assume james passed and his widow got it not knowing what to do with it. the 182 is owned by don manifee. the piper is owned by vincent pike, registration expired 3 years ago.

As a retired A&P IA I've seen this many times. At one time they had a valuable asset, but then they sit on it thinking that they are retaining value, when all they're doing is devaluing the aircraft due to corrosion and disuse. All the monies that will have to be invested make the purchase of these aircraft pointless unless you are an A&P and can write off your labor to yourself.

Hey Tim.. Just for giggles I looked up those registration numbers. The Cherokee has been deregistered but the 150 and the 182 are both owned by the same person so she has two rotting planes. Not sure why...? Oh so you said the one hulk could be used with a simulator? That would be cool! So you do that and fly R/C too? X Plane here and of course FPV R/C. Anyways great vid. :)

I've rescued a Bowers Fly Baby from a barn in Kentucky and got her flying again. My Fly Baby is in the May 2018 addition of Sport Aviation. I just acquired a 65 Cessna 172F to overhaul and get flying again. I also have a 72 Citabria ECA that will be finish around September, and the last is a 66 Piper Cherokee 140 I'm overhauling. Lots of work, but I'm trying to do my part saving these neglected airplanes. My wife says I can't get anymore planes until I finish what we have and sell some of them. It's a fun hobby, but you got to know what your getting into and know when to walk away. We can't save them all.

I Googled the N numbers and came up with the records... The Cherokee 140 is a 1966 and its ownership is unclear. The Cessna 150 owner's name popped right up.

Plenty of ramp queens at my airport. Sad to think that someone would buy a plane with no intent or desire to take care of it. Worst thing you can do to an airplane (or any machine, for that matter) is to let it sit. My airplane's mechanic says it's common for him to do annuals on airplanes that fly less than 10 hours a year.

The owner of the green 150 is one Doris Darlene Manifee (Ladd), 87 years old, of Black Canyon City, Arizona who passed away on December 4, 2021. There are living relatives who more than likely don't even know where this plane is, or if it even exists.

It is painful to see planes at fields just sitting there. We have some at KWBW that are derelicts just sitting there. Majority of the time, it is due to cost. Aviation is an expensive hobby. Planes way past annuals, engines beyond TBO.Parts too expensive to repair. I agree 100%, if you can't own it, sell it! Those planes might be worth more in parts. I would love that c152.

Their are always going to be aircraft caught up in legal issues, estate disputes, divorce settlements, and other litigation. Some times it takes decades to settle these issues and no one can touch them until that time. Meanwhile someone collects storage fees for said aircraft.

Those planes are pretty roached out. Will take a fortune just to get the best one (182) in ferry condition for extensive work. Good news is they are in dry desert air. I don't really agree that there is a pilot shortage because people aren't selling planes cheap or giving them away. There's a pilot shortage because general aviation died in the 80's and average Joey millenial today has absolutely no hope getting a license, buying a plane, storing a plane, paying for Annuals, paying insurance nor buying $5.00 gallon fuel. In the 70's small planes where everywhere because even a lower paid worker could afford a Tri-pacer, 150, 172 or maybe a 140-180. To own or fly any one of those planes today is a staggering yearly fixed cost burden before buying oil, gas or a nice sun shade. AND now you gotta' buy mandatory ADSB and who knows what's next. Like the guy Ed says....Psh !

Yes it's dead and the planes left out there are sitting around so much it's causing problems. Just follow the Aviation-Safety.net incident database and look at the number of engine failures and mishaps going on with small planes. Rusty planes, Rusty Pilots... Between the hassle, regulation and costs just stick a fork in the whole GA thing.

Was left to me by an uncle and it hasn't been in the air since the early 2000's Had full plans on doing a restoration, but after doing some research and digging. I decided it would had been a financial disaster.

@@LM90MTL mmm more likely the owns who plans they are have passed away and the family does not know they are still paying for the aircraft have a sister work for the airport here in Canada each year she makes the call to see if they are still alive they plane was not used for a year just checking. one family know his dad had a plane but did not know where or what type of aircraft it was there mother did not know she was just kept paying for the storage of the plane 4 years I did not fly it sit behind the hanger that they wear paying for to be inside too. where it was the owner new that he passed away and know for awhile he could start selling the parts from the plane when they came for it it was stripped out they person got 8-month in jail for fraud when he did get out the family did put a lien on the businesses he owns did not take very long they had the money for the plane the shell was sold some after that and was able to rebuild the form and another down plane that plane has a crash was able to be used for that other plane here my sister says to take up to go 1 to 2 years before they let the plane fly again paperwork take that long

A lot of people don’t even know they own them, my grandfather had a plane, grandma didn’t know about it because she told him not to fly and he hid it. Then later he passed away and my dad told her about it. She said get rid of it.

And again there might be a short lived brief low level of airline pilots but no shortage anywhere else. Infact to many. The costs are to high: Fuel, insurance, maintenance, registration etc, and people needing to take this serious with good grades in school and not out for a Sunday drive are what’s needed.

That's what happened to me. I flew my 172 more than 1,100 hours past TBO. The last annual showed the compression starting to drop, so I sold it while it was still flying. I couldn't afford the overhaul. The guy that bought it overhauled it and it still flies today.

Looks like the owner of the first abandoned plane was a man named JAMES R MANIFEE who was a Corporal for the US Army in the Korean War. Looks like he passed away in February 2012 and the ownership was subsequently transferred to his wife DORIS DARLENE MANIFEE in 2013. The second abandoned plane, the Piper is listed by the NTSB as having been in a "Collision with ground/water: controlled" in Westphalia Michigan in 2011.

What makes me mad? FAA! I was diagnosed with childhood ADHD and therefore would have a heck of a time trying to get a PPL. I still intend to get a LSA permit sometime in my life, but it is so freaking hard to find aircraft at a decent price and LSP instructors in my area. Used Cessnas are so much cheaper and better than current LSA offerings. Past ADHD shouldn't be a death sentence to a would-be career pilot. It is time that the FAA was forced to re-evaluate some of its standards! I know I would make a darn good pilot. I WILL PROVE IT WITH LIGHT SPORT! It also makes me mad to see people who could be flying these but would rather let them rot!

Sadly some of these airplanes just sit and rot becuz the owner suddenly passed away and the family just doesnt know what to do or how to go about selling the airplane so they just neglect it
