Abandoned Burger King - Middleburg Heights, OH. In this video we go back to a trip we took in the fall to the Cleveland area. Little did we know our hotel was right across the street from this abandoned Burger King. Obviously I had to check it out. Enjoy!

It's interesting that you mention that there is often an abandoned Burger King near an abandoned Kmart. In my area, there had been an abandoned Burger King in the same shopping center as an abandoned Kmart. The entire shopping center is supposed to get converted to affordable housing.

Most of those Burger King's that were built near Kmart are older locations and they were built there because of all the shoppers that used to go to KMart and other stores in those shopping centers. High traffic areas were good for business.

Just an update for anyone wondering (I live in the Cleveland area). The former K-Mart location is now a Cleveland Clinic. The Fin, Feather & Fur expanded just a little into a section the Cleveland Clinic didn't use. The Burger King was tore down and Panera is building a new location there. (the old location 2 blocks away at Middleburg Town Square closed).

Great video Wallie! You are right with Burger King having a lot of restaurants near these Kmart's. I know of one myself, although the Burger King is not abandoned, and the Kmart is demolished, the one in Shamokin, PA is the one I am referring to.

Wallie I worked for bk for 17 yrs sadly they are run a lot like kmart. Franchise owners flip every few years except for carrolls. Like kmart their marketing never kept up with the times. We had a broiler you could have made a tbone steak in and one of mgrs did. Sadly like kmart bk seems to have path foward. It clings to its past items I'm eating an Italian chicken and a double stacked as I type this. Love the channel man. Take a trip to wisconsin and film some abandoned shopkos. Sadly we have lots of them. I miss shopko

You’re exactly right. Here where I live the Burger King was on one corner and on the opposite corner was our Kmart. And when Kmart closed its doors the BK closed a year or so later. Also, next time you happen to check out a abandoned BK would you check to see who the manufacturer of the signs were? There’s usually a small chrome looking label on the bottom on them listing manufacturer, voltage and so on. I used to work for a company called Cummings Signs and we produced a lot of the signage for Them. A lot of the lollipop signs, drive thru and directional. Just thought that’s be cool to incorporate who made the signs for them if you wanted to. 😊 Keep up the great work Wallie!

Great video, here in , Columbia/lexington SC we had like 11 BK locations. In or around 1997 corporate came in and shut them all down. The same person owned all of the franchises and did not pay his franchise fees. We didn't have any bk's at all for 5 years until a new person came in and reopened a majority but not all of them. No whoppers for all those years

That Kmart certainly became lucky in that regard. The Kmart where I live is getting demolished, and affordable housing is getting built in this place. I know many people argue that affordable housing is good, but my area is overpopulated. It has a very fast-growing population, but the proportion of businesses and amenities is not keeping up with the fast-growing population.

Background on the Kmart/BK co-locations: (I analyze shopping center architecture and values as a side job and have seen a ton of these and their development plans) Kmart, BK and Kroger (or other regional grocer) very often partnered together on shopping center developments throughout the '70s and '80s. They weren't the only ones. You'll notice a lot of older Walmarts ('90s) have Taco Bells nearby. Same sort of deal. In most cases, the Kmart came first, followed by the grocery store and fast food a year or two later. I think they waited to make sure the Kmart would take off first. Some all opened together. The Kmart/Grocery/BK combos seemed to peak around 1980-81. Some irony is that a Kmart/Kroger built together (with the wall in-between busted out) would basically be a modern Walmart/Meijer-type supercenter. I guess they didn't see that then. This particular BK is 1999 or newer as it was built with the then-new logo and wasn't retrofit into a square sign case like pre-1999 stores. My guess is that it probably is 1999 or 2000 based on a few clues. That color combo saw some popularity around then for a brief time. You sometimes saw teal or purple with it too. Sometimes the restaurant didn't get built until years later. Sometimes BK would pass and someone else (often Arby's) would step in. Shopping malls were done the same way. Taubman always partnered with Sears and/or Hudson's or another anchor to build their malls and actually sold the land beneath the stores to them to help finance the mall. Most of those anchor stores are legally separate parcels/anchors and it's caused headaches when trying to redevelop failed malls. You end up with one empty department store still standing with a giant wall and stuff like that (see Randall Park Mall).

I checked Google Street View, figuring this was converted from something else, but it's been a BK for a long time and was heavily remodeled sometime between 2011 and 2014. Also, the McDonalds was completely razed and rebuilt as a box (for no good reason IMO) in 2011.

They just finished tearing this old BK building down today. They're cleaning up the mess right now. I used to park right next to the building for shade while waiting for GrubHub orders until they fenced it off last week.

Totally dug the intro on this video! I need to find a community of people like that to do abandoned videos with! Very cool. To answer your question, at least in theory, it's just the time that they were built- especially in the suburbs. There was an explosion of construction at the same time with shopping centers where KMart is the anchor store. Burger King jumped on fast as they were being built at a fast pace. McDonald's, has their own real estate empire, so many of those stores were built as stand alone units.. That's my thought! Keep up the good work!

We had a shopping center that had a locally owned grocery store in there it was called croppers market and it had a burger King in the shopping center the grocery store closed and after that the burger King closed that was about 6 years ago since then another locally owned grocery store opened up again in there and the burger King is now a dunkin doughnuts.

Another fab video Wallie! Yeah, we had a BK in the same plaza as Kmart. The BK closed shortly after Kmart. It was demolished and an Wendy's was built it's in place. Kmart was renovated to a Shoprite. Same thing applys with those two I seem to always see Wendy's & Shoprite together in the same shopping center/vicinity. Anywho keep up the excellent work w/these fantastic videos of yours!

I am actually wondering the same thing. My friend told me they are likely to go out of business before 2030. Last time I had Burger King, the food was actually pretty decent overall. However, I ordered fries but got onion rings instead.

I saw where you did the abandoned K-Mart in Clemmons NC a while back. (it’s an Aldi now!) that was my childhood store / I’ve lived in that area most of my life and now that I think about it you’re so right about the Burger Kings. there’s one actually still open right in front of the store but I’m not sure if it’s gonna last much longer. I remember that BK being the hot spot for a long time, now it feels like hardly anyone goes there.

If you come to Lima you'll find several abandoned places. 2 Kmarts (1 currently houses a new tenant), a repurposed Wal-Mart, Subway, Home Depot, Sears, Macy's, Elder Beerman, a Movie theater, Ray's Market (Local), Steak and Shake (Becoming a Starbucks), and all that.

also that are is called the area where restaurants and employee's go to die. Most places will ship employee's in to those locations because they cant staff. Shortly after they begin working those locations they leave the company. That area has one of the last four remaing max n erma's in existence. The other four are in columbus. It has one of the last four perkins in the area. It hasnt been able to fully open its dining room since before the pandemic. That are area is truly cursed.
