Extremely expensive truck. Cannot believe it was just abandoned. I would definitely restore it. This was definitely a special order truck and probably around $600,000.00

I ran Western Star 4900XDs and a 6900XD doing the same thing. The 6900XD was an incredible truck, the weakness was the VMAC air compressor. We outright couldn't get compressor oil for the thing much less parts because of how screwed-up the company's supply system was. The truck chassis are great, we ran the hell out of those things.

Love it!! Next time when using welder to charge 12V batteries, set it to 14.7 Volts. This is about aggressive as is you can be and still be safe for the battery. 13.8V is the "slow charge" voltage. That said, I would have been tempted to push it further ;-)

Correct but got to be very careful with electronic systems. Life was so much simpler without all these electronics. Oh yes I had 2 D-8 cat batteries blow up on myself & a young rookie miner. Lincoln pipeliner D-11 need started over why operator couldn’t start it even between shift’s is a huge mystery today. I was watching other dozer crazy operator in equipment yard running wide open within inches of us. I turn look at that rookie only to yell NO!! He hook ground to the ground on batteries Boom!! Of course that straight DC welder crank right up and covered myself & him with battery acid. It blow up in that poor boys face. Hospital he went. Thank God he didn’t loose his eyes. I had brand new $125+ insulated coveralls on . Mine foreman wanted go hospital with poor boy. I had completely inspected the job site & sign off on Mine foreman books. When he got back that acid after I bet over 100 gallons water it still eat all my clothes off my body even my underwear. I was wearing rags tied together. I was so naked I couldn’t on my way home to stop at a store to get a cold beer to calm my nerves down. True story I just glad that boy didn’t loose his eye site. 1 thing I sure was hot over them 2 dozer operators. Specially Mr Wide Open. The main guy jump him too & told myself to fire him on the spot right in front that guy he ever pull a stupid stunt like that again. Thank God it wasn’t any worse than it was accident wise. That equipment operator stayed far away as he could from myself after that stupid stunt. True story after 37 years of mining experience I got a lot true stories a lot very sad & lost many very close friends very sadly. Having stop on my way home to break news to a wife & she had to break news to her 3 little kids that Daddy not coming home & I stop bring his belongings back home is not a pleasant experience at all. Boy drove his pick up Tk home jump in my Tk too chicken go to the door. We was great friends she wanted me bring her late husband belongings home to her at end of our shift.

I'd like to see you fix it up. My first truck driving job was in 1979 when I was 18, and I drove a brand new C500 dump truck that my moms cousin bought for his gravel company. It was a great truck. Ironically I was just talking to someone else about the truck a couple hours ago. That's a little creepy... Unfortunately the one I drove didn't have a CAT. It had an 8V-98TT Detroit with a 13 speed. It didn't have the steel hood either, it had a fiberglass hood but it did have the squared off fenders. It wasn't quite as heavy duty as this one. It didn't have planetary differentials either but it did had a smaller version of the Hendrickson suspension with rubber blocks.

Some transit buses have had those hub reduction rear axles for decades. Mercedes and MAN were using them from the early 1970s to enable a shorter rear overhang. American transit buses started using those same German sourced HR axles from the 2000s.

I think I’d rather have the Hendrickson solid suspension on a setup like that, it really wouldn’t ride any worse on those FEL tires anyway and you have a lot less to worry about, pretty much the only thing that can fail on those that results in a rollover is if a walking beam breaks and that is really rare to happen.

Years ago I learned that a battery needs to be 12. 7 volts minimum. It is considered dead at 12 volts. Your charging system operates at 13 - 14 volts. I had a Bluebird bus with a 5.9 cummins . It had a 200 amp starting circuit. I am sure that C15 would have a 300 amp starting circuit. And PLEASE DON'T either a Cat engine. Very bad for them.

Really flat batteries will sometimes not take a charge well to start with, but may come back to life and the charging current rises, I would expect these batteries to take far more current when charging. As others have said 14 volts is a more normal charging voltage.

The axles are not planetary, they are hub reduction by Clark, like a Kirkstall, Albion and MAN Mercedes. Secondary Wilson pattern reduction gearsets mounted in each wheel hub allowing the use of smaller differentials and increase ground clearance .
