I’d sure like to know if there are bells in the central tower. 32 bells would be a carillon. That tower is supported by 4 steel vertical I beams. A lot of stone and brick weight is sitting there upon those 4 columns.......rusting away to be sure. One night it will all just collapse.

I was working in Hammond Indiana in 1981-83 and went into Gary for parts and materials at times and it was already starting to go down hill then. I went back in the early nineties to do work at US steel it had gotten worse and now WOW!!

This CAN be restored believe it or not. There was similar event with the Old Hattiesburg High School. The only thing that had was a old collapsing 4 story shell, no floors or walls.

They ran out of money and the parish dwindled to the point of making the church unsustainable. A university was using parts of the attached Seaman Hall building for a while after the church closed, but even that didn't last. Any hopes of ever restoring the building for use were dashed in 1997 when some assclown started a number of fires in Downtown Gary, one of which extensively damaged the church and Seaman Hall. The climate of Gary results in heavy decay to buildings exposed to the weather, so the building continues to grow less and less stable as the winters pass. I would have loved to see this building in its prime, I can scarcely imagine how grand it must have looked.

This historic church is too far gone and structurally compromised to be repaired and rehabilitated. Sadly, demolition and clearance is the only viable option.

Kenneth Dillard I did get a filming permit from the city. We visited there one time when a music video was being shot and got shoed away so we decided to return with a permit. Email [e-mail] and I can forward you the info. I would go with a friend if you do.
