This abandoned funeral home that left all the caskets behind was located in the southern United States. The funeral home was well-known in the local community and helped thousands of families celebrate the lives of their loved ones over the years.
However, in more recent years the steady wave of success came crashing down on the funeral home shortly after new ownership took over operations.
The first sign that trouble was on the horizon began in 2015, when a customer complaint prompted the State Board to make an unannounced visit to the funeral home. Their job was to make sure that the customer complaint was valid and to ensure that the funeral home was “up to code.”
During the State Board visit, authorities noted dirty, used embalming tools and equipment that were supposed to be sanitary. They found that the embalming room had not been cleaned for quite some time, as they went on to find undrained Bodily fluids, as well as both Bloody sheets and gowns that were not properly disposed of. One of the authorities later stated that the embalming room “resembled a slaughterhouse” so I’m sure you can imagine what it looked like. The investigation did not stop at the embalming room.
As the authorities began investigating the funeral homes records and finances, more questions quickly arose. The investigation uncovered missing financial documents, which lead to state board placing the funeral home on a 3 year probationary period. If the funeral home could show that they are following through on their commitment to “clean up their act” then they could continue to operate. If not, the funeral home would be shut down immediately.
So in 2018, 3 years later, the state board set a hearing with the funeral homes owner. The purpose of this hearing was to give the funeral homes owner a chance to redeem himself, explain the unsanitary conditions and shoddy record keeping, and to resolved that initial customer complaint. Unfortunately for the funeral home, neither the owner or anyone else showed for the hearing. Instead, the owner closed down his funeral home and fled the area.
Once this happened, the state board was left with no other choice but to revoke the funeral homes permit and subsequently, the owners license.
In 2019, the funeral home was permanently shuttered by the state.
As of 2022, the funeral home still sits vacant, but did recently sell in an auction, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this one time successful funeral home.

I was about to ask what happens to all those caskets? Maybe they can be donated or given to somebody for a tiny fraction of the selling price. There are a lot of low-income or no-income people who would appreciate that. Those caskets are not cheap after all.

That baby casket you saw, is a casket, just had one of those a few weeks ago for a 2 month old. It's called "love, cherish, forever" and it actually comes with a teddy bear and it also double as the burial vault too, so it's placed directly into the bare earth and covered. In Illinois we have to stick around to make sure the grave is covered...not the family if they so wish

Some people are under the assumption that instruments for taking care of the dead Don't need the same sanitary care surgical ones use. It's not for the deceased it's for the technician! Don't think the dead can't hurt you! My late husband was a morgue tech. And while stitching someone up broke the skin on his finger. He had a fever and infection. And that's just it, during the pandemic especially, we heard about the medical & nursing staff but we never heard about funeral directors/embalmers who were also handling bodies. Those bodies still had the virus in them so the embalmers also had to be especially careful. Funeral directors/embalmers were also 'front line workers' and deserve just as much respect.

We all kept hearing about doctors, nurses, store clerks, etc. being "heroes" and what not and we all internally were screaming. I can't tell you how much potentially infected bodily fluids I've had on / around me. Even now, we aren't even an afterthought. Neck Restraints? Slabs? Old chool embalming machine? In the trade embalmers use a head block to rest the head on the embalming table. It's a porcelaine table, not slab. The white embalming machines are called Porti-Boys which became popular in the early 1900s. That "Old School" machine was actually a new invention by Edwards Equipment in St. Louis, Missouri. I remember when my uncle installed it in his preperation (we don't call them embaling rooms) room in 1967. It's called a Duotronic Machine. It offers a little more control in injecting fluids. The instruments you labled as autopsy, are actually actually forceps. The ones with the the holes are called arterial clamps. We use them to lock the injection canula into the artery we're injectng the arterial fluid into. Shame on the owner who left that funeral home in such deplorable conditions. Especially the preperation room. Shame on you for makng this video and using words such as creepy. College graduates with a degree in Mortuary Science realize they are helping bereaved families transition through the loss of a loved one. God knows we're not in this profession for the money, or because we think it's cool to work on dead human bodies. I see a lot of bad things in this profession. Especially the death of a child. Many nights I hear the wailing of a parent when they see their child in the casket. The sad part is viewers of your video will remember your trip to the "creepy" funeral home and label anyone who works in the industry a creep.

Whoever this guy was he was very fortunate to use Pierce and Dodge embalming products. What do you say before he was called Jaundy balm. It’s a very good fluid to mix in with your other fluids and pour into the embalming machine when you have a jaundice case. And belive , me a jaundiced body is a bitch unless you are very experienced because the discoloration of the skin has already taken place via the failure of the liver before the person died plus there’s always a lot of swelling. I have seen in the experience bullshit embalmers completely ruined any chance of a visitation of the loved one because of the fact they started off with a white or light skinned individual and ended up with a black individual due to their incompetence with jaundice embalming.

@@katherineleonowski7289 They would still put them in a normal casket. The big casket is made for a morbidly obese person. It's a PITA to move around and deal with. Plus it costs far more than a regular casket. It holds 1,000 pounds. Most people 2 or 3 don't add up to that much weight. I've seen parents buried with their children in normal sized caskets though.

Why don't they donate the unused caskets to families that can't afford them, and has money issues. Don't understand that.

I have sooo many questions. If it’s been shut down for a couple of years, how are the lights still on? Like who’s paying the bill? And why is it still left as if they came in and closed it down that day, and never returned? Did they not have the time to even remove all of the equipment? Like somebody can literally come in and take a never used casket, take it to the funeral home that has their loved one and say I’ve already bought a casket… just so much😞

That's good it was shut down for being disgusting u have to always be sanitary
@BNails
@BNails 2 жыл бұрын
You don't actually. There's sanitary and there's clean enough to meet state board criteria. An embalming room doesn't have to sanitize like you may think since there is no risk to the deceased. Transferring disease from one body to another is not a concern. However, there is a minimum standard for the living who enter that room - the embalmers. There should always be PPE worn, so it doesn't need to be like an operating room, but there shouldn't be random obvious risks either.

It looks like it can be saved and reopened to serve the community again. Some heavy intense cleaning and disinfecting should be done soon before this building is lost to neglect.

Sooooo, this video seems hard to believe, I actually don't believe this place is abandoned. Two years and no dust on ANYTHING, not even the fake flowers. Even if sold at auction, there is no way the stained gurney would not have been tossed, not even cleaned, it would have been tossed by the Property preservation department. Folks believe anything 😂😂

Chapel is what we in the south refer to that room. Some larger funeral homes have smaller rooms off to the side for multiple visitations and we call those Parlors.

What you call the vaults and the urns are simply samples of vaults that the caskets go into. What do you call neck restraints are actually called head props. Good video.
