Abandoned Inner City Elementary School - Millions of Dollars in Equipment left!

Today we find ourselves in an Inner City in the Midwest United States. Located inside is an interesting abandoned building. Once an elementary school , this building is filled with equipment and supplies as if the place is still functional. Finding history on this place was impossible , all i found was population decrease in a number of years before closing. From what I found online, the school closed due to not meeting capacity. There were less than 300 students in the school for grades PreK to 8th. It just closed down at the end of the 2015 school year.

That's heartbreaking to see all those childrens books just going to waste like that when so many kids don't have books at all. I don't understand why things like that are not donated.

Sad truth is donations take money. You have easily 2,000 text books in there. The underfunded school needs to find another school that needs them, then coordinate them picking the books up, or even worse - bring them there. And the schools getting them don't have the funds for basic stuff so they might not have people who want to work after hours to pick stuff up. And yes, people could volunteer but school systems are usually union. A big part is no volunteering in lieu of pay so people don't get screwed (i.e. a worker told they have to volunteer for their nonprofit for 5 hours a month, when it should be paid and regulated work). Unions are great but they cause hiccups like this, just like bus drivers need to be paid to drive buses to be covered by insurance to go get the books. Otherwise insurance companies could say sorry, you weren't doing this for work so use your own insurance. It's all annoying and in this case incredibly sad. People should get to use all those supplies. But when the schools close because of no funding, instead of reasons like so many students they need a bigger building, it's more feasible to let things rot than to coordinate where to get the money to donate it all.

6:55 those are not toys; they are math manipulatives. New teachers would love to have those! They are expensive for a new educator to buy and there is never enough money in the budget. So much waste there! :-(

@@_to_dream_or_not_to_dream It's not the school staff stealing money. It's the higher administrators. The staff (teachers) usually have to supplement student supplies out of their own pockets because the funding they need doesn't trickle down to them.

When he said "toys", I as thinking: "no, they are manipulatives!"🤦 And the toy sink for a house keeping center to play with; he was wondering if it ever worked,& looked,& said "nope, no piping."😂 I noticed these details immediately bc I'm a Preschool teacher. The school closed due to low enrollment. The building was left unlocked and scrappers pulled all the copper out quickly, and vandals smashed all the windows. The school was closed in 2015. And yes it did have a playground, but it was removed after the school closed unlike the usable stuff in the building.

I’m a former teacher, there is a lot of waste in schools, from books to food to lack of recycling* programs. Our Country is overrun with waste.

The textbooks were probably obsolete in a year or two, the chairs and stuff were cheap plastic crap not worth the cost to carry out to a truck somewhere to clean and sanitize to use elsewhere.

The Leapfrog learning pad was for Leapfrog books. You could touch words with the pen and it would read it out loud. Wow that brings back a lot of memories. I'd completely forgotten about it

I can only imagine how many tens of millions of dollars had been poured into that school only for this to happen. Resources that aren't available to most schools outside of major urban centers. Only to see the school go to waste, be vandalized, stripped, and left to decay. So-called "privileged individuals" who live in smaller towns and rural areas would love to have the resources and space at their schools that this school had.

WTH? I read a news article about this school dated May 2019 that said local officials were completely appalled at this happening and that they were having the building secured and all of the supplies left inside removed. I guess they didn't follow through!

The school was closed in 2015, along with 15 other schools. The district was doing some redistricting based on declining enrollment. This large school only had approximately 225 students (K-8) the year it closed.

The architecture of the school really reminds me of a japanese/chinese type of style. it’s upsetting to see all of that go to waste.

The architecture of this school is extremely fascinating. Some things look like they're from the 70's (like the counter at 11:53, the style of the door jambs, and the florescent fixtures) while at the same time the building almost looks like it was retrofitted to be a school; hence the extreme open air design and use of a lot of natural light. I'm sure this isn't true though. They really made this indoor school feel very open and its not confining.

It’s too late now, all the stuff has been sitting there for years and Toxic Mold began to grow on the stuff, plus most of the stuff is a Health Hazard by now, so no. The Resources can’t be taken to other schools, plus it cost money for other School Resources to be transferred to another School. Hints why they left all of it behind.

Thanks for the video, love your insight. My wife is currently in a native american reservation in Montana and she was just remarking on the lack of desks, chairs ect. needed to properly educate native children on the reservation. All I can say is what a waste to see valuable resources just rotting away.

I find that public buildings in the US vids are left to how they were on the day the place closed, much like a zombie apocalypse! with equipment still visible and personal data lying about including photos and so on. In the UK this wouldn’t happen. There maybe a few things left over but local councils and insurance companies would have most if not all of the items removed for reuse and to prevent a fire hazard

Because you showed the state flag I managed to find the location of this particular school. There is an article dated 2/6/2015 saying it was due to close at the end of that school year alongside a nearby High School. Definitely the same location due to the concrete architecture and the little plant recess in the atrium.

This school is huge. This would have been better as a high school. When it comes to grade schools its better to have smaller classrooms. the fact it doesn't have a space for recess is now the mindset of education in america. "To learn is to study, not to play". Sad

Everyone asking why they let the supplies rot "while other school systems don't have resources" has answered their own question. School systems run on such tight budgets that to them it makes more sense to abandon the school as is than to try to salvage anything. It's not like having a yard sale where you put post prices and people come and bring items up to the cashier to pay for them (I mean, you could do it that way, but the low amount of customers you'd get and the labor you would need to help with the sale wouldn't make it worthwhile, not to mention issues with insurance or liability if someone gets hurt). You could hire a company that specializes in selling used commercial supplies, but there is that initial investment you have to make, and it's possible you won't make back enough to justify that investment. You also can't just "donate" the items to another school district. Someone has to pay for movers to come in, load up trucks, drive to a school or warehouse and unload them. And again, strapped budgets make that hard. The sad reality is if you tell a school system they could spend less money now and save even less money in the future or they could spend more money now and save even more money in the future, they will choose spending the least amount of money now. Not because they are greedy or unsympathetic, but because at the end of the year, they know there will always be unfinished capital projects, unfulfilled teaching positions, and under stocked schools, so the more money they can squeeze out of a fiscal year, the better.

If they were just going to leave everything to rot & leave the door open, why not hand the place over to a charity, all those classrooms could have been turned into sleeping dorms, you have toilets & I assume showers if playing basketball etc, kitchens with dining hall, library could have been a communal area, for either the homeless or a women's refuge & anything they couldn't use could have been sold towards redecorating/funding the place

I grew up & went to school in Ohio, graduating in 1979 from a great school system & it still is. If this school was in my school system, had voted for my taxes to go towards a school like this, & never opened with all this material still in it; I would be furious!!! Would be demanding some answers from the school board for sure. Why has no one gone in & retrieved the desks & anything else of use from there? Can anyone get permission to do that? What a waste!

If I was a teacher, I would come here and have a team of fellow teachers help to clear the place out. Those books need read, those chair need sat in, and those toys need played with. Too often teachers pay for their school supplies including tables and chairs sometimes with their own money. I want to gather a team of teachers to help me clear this building out now. We aren't going to destroy it. We're going to give it a new life

It certainly was not a public school as they had the religious poster. Looks to be some sort of Catholic charter or magnet school. They used Foss science kits and the AR reading levels. Lot of expensive stuff going to waste.

So so SOOO sad to see all that perfectly good supplies going to waste. Government is always taking funding for schools away and here all this just sits to rot. The money parents have to spend every year to buy certain supplies for their child to SHARE with the rest of the class and this goes to waste. Some teachers come out of their own pockets to get things for their students and this school district just lets all of this go to waste. I know I've said waste a lot but, I can't stress that enough, it really is. This is a down right shame, to say the least! More people need to see this video, then maybe just maybe, it will shame this district to go in and salvage what can be salvaged. So much money down the drain, just sitting to be vandalized. Books BOOKS, I can't believe this. All in all, it was great find guys. You did an awesome job on exposing such wastfulness. My children are grown now but, I have grandchildren and children of friends still in school. This makes me sick, it's an outrage! On a lighter note, this THE biggest freaking school I've ever seen for an elementary school. This was a great explore, these buildings really ought to be demolished as part of district closing and restructuring plans but that's really expensive so I guess if the money isn't there to keep them open, there's no point expecting any to be there for demolition. Enrollment in all the rustbelt city schools took a big hit (think down by half or more) when the manufacturing jobs left during the '80s-2000s. As far as taxpayer dollars wasted on materials, that's normal everywhere in public education. The only difference between public schools and charter schools is that the charter school companies can take their taxpayer-funded stuff and do whatever they want with it. Education money is wasted every day on useless curriculum "upgrades" and never on the teachers' salaries.

Im from Wisconsin and at my first elementary school we had lockers then after 3rd grade I ended up moving north 40 miles and no lockers and more advanced. I never learned multiplication or division because the teacher said " I would had learned that last year" however we didnt. Another thing was my first elementary was k-6 then 40 miles north was k--5. Also the whole school up north elementary middle and high school are all in the same building single floor

The fact that it was built with so much concrete and the way that the ventilation system was running and no playground makes me believe that the building itself was built on a practically non-existent budget. Very bare bones and I honestly couldn’t blame parents for moving their kids away or to different schools. I sure wouldn’t want my kids or nieces or nephews to go to a school like that. I think this whole thing was doomed from its inception…
