The Cobra II aka "Farrah" is back in action! We last left off with budget performance mods, but I wasn't quite happy with the result. Today with the help of performancedistributors.com/ and Hemmings Motor News, we put Farrah on the fast track to being a wicked street machine!

Dylan I love the way this car is coming together. The stance with those wheels and tires are perfect. Glad to see you getting it to run so well. This car would be a great candidate to see how good you can get it to look with a rattle can paint job and maybe even add the stripes back on it. Then drive it to shows and road rallies. Maybe a viewer could send you a dash pad for the old girl. That one is a Little crunchy.

Why would excessive timing advance make it lean? Also, he needs to hook up the vacuum advance for better mileage at no cost to performance. Even dragsters idle at times and that idle might as well be clean and efficient. If the pulled the vacuum advance off his original distributor it might explain his problem because he could then have retarded his base timing, use the vacuum advance to keep his idle decent, and avoid excessive timing while pulling.

Randy, I love the scamp and wish I could afford to take it off your hands but can’t. As for the engine, either whoever built the engine for your scamp was clueless as to what works together and what doesn’t, or there are tuning issues or the engine is worn out. Whether it’s a 318 or a 340 it should still perform better than it is doing. But, being a flood car, you have to expect there to be lots of issues. Also did you change the gear lube in the rear end? If the engine and transmission had water in them the rear end will too.

Personally I think that year Mustang looks great. When they came out, I was very partial to the 65 to 73 Mustangs. I owned a 65, 66, 68 fastback and a 71 Mach 1 that I loved. My dad bought that for me when I got my drivers license back in 1981. I remember my dad driving it home to my surprise. The body was in great shape but needed paint. The interior was all there but was ripping at the seat bottoms. The biggest thing I remember was the cloud of smoke it left fogged out the neighborhood. He handed me the keys and I went to work on it for days and nights I would be spending any free time I had on it. I even remember prepping the car for paint. I painted it Midnight blue. It looked great but it lasted about a year before fading. I had taken it too Earl Shieb and it cost about 120 dollars. Still it was a babe magnet that attracted every car enthusiast in Thousand Oaks, California. I even was privileged to drive it amongst other hot rods in the parade. That was a blast. Anyway, That little Mustang you have was not all bad. Kind of reminds me of the early to mid 80's Toyota Supra. I can't wait to see this little guy get some restoration. I hope you keep this little gem and see how far the value will go.

The Cobra II was a Pinto with a v8, light and quick. Same year Camaro had a better suspension, cornered better and rode better. THE Camaro weighed a lot more, aftermarket performance parts for the Ford cost a lot more. The trunk on a Camaro was small, but was better than no trunk. The weak part of both cars was the weak standard equipment 4 speed transmission. Trans am and Z28 options had the Borg warner t-10 plenty strong for any brand small block. All in the Cobra II was a cool car for the smog era of cars, from the factory the 302 Cobra had a 2 barrell carb, change that to a 4bbl Holley 600 double pumper and you had a Rocket. Hooker was the only company that made headers for the Cobra II cost was about $400, headers for a 350 Camaro about $70 back in the day.

That distributor made a huge difference. After all these years I never realized how inadequate the factory duraspark ignition really are I wish they made those when I owned my Ford’s. Thank you Dylan for sharing this video with us. On your cooling system I’d definitely flush the entire system and replace the thermostat as you said. A large electric fan would make a difference too. I’d run the 302 till it quits and get a 347 Stroker crate engine. Whatever you decide is fine too with me. Have a Blessed One Sir.

I can’t believe how invested I’ve become in this cool little Mustang 2 - there is just something special about it. Part of me would love to see it get a full restoration for being such a trooper - but also it kinda looks like a movie villain in its current state and looks really badass as it is. Either way I’d love to see more of it and the car deserves to be loved. I’m a Chevy guy, and own a 77 Camaro as my daily, so it’s unusual for me to take interest in a mustang but this little fella rocks.

How about trying something different for this poor car. Repair the body and repaint it. Don’t let it remain a derelict-looking wreck.

Hi Dylan. Im enjoying the series on the '77 Cobra II, since I owned a '76 Cobra II. I received it around 1982 post-college, after a family member drove it about 70K miles. Because it was always in the family, I knew the history of the car well. One thing you should know is that we always had an issue with overheating. If we got caught in traffic with the AC on, we'd watch the temp gauge nervously. There were times when I had to pull off and let it cool down. We tried various things to correct the issue (flushing, hoses, etc), but nothing really changed. It came from the factory with an 8 blade fan, as I recall. If you are going to run it hard, you should know this, since you may need to come up with a solution that the engineers at Ford never really addressed (or knew about). Anyway, I had lots of fun with mine and it turned some heads, although by todays standards it was woefully slow. Your mods are making it into the car I always wanted it to be. Love it and have fun ... and keep up the videos. You put a smile on my face each time I hear it run through the gears now.

Well, folks, you can definitely tell that this car has an open carrier bearing in the differential, because it's doing the "One Wheel Peel" whenever Dylan does a burnout

One of my pigeons is white with those same rust colored spots as this car. I call him Captain Marble. This is not a put down of your car, it's a compliment. The Captain is strong, fast, healthy, and smart. He's a wonderful bird. He's also friendly and funny, and he is a very dear friend. He rocks, same as this car. I just had to laugh when you finished the wash and I saw the resemblance. They both have the same color scheme, and that's cool. ........Cheers!

My first good car I bought was a 78 Mustang Cobra II. That car started my Love for Mustangs and other Ford vehicles. I did sell that car but I sure wish I would have kept it but I was young with a new family and had to let her go. Thanks for saving her, I enjoy watching!!!

Thanks for the info in the distributor. I have a '69 block 302 with '68 heads built into a 347 stroker (Lunati Cam) in a '84 Ranger 4x4. Im not looking for speed and had the heads built for torque, but that distributor looks like just what I need. Right now its down waiting for a different cab ( I rolled it almost a year ago). Because of health issues, I havent got to work on it much (I died 3 times in Dec), and am getting back into shape (kinda). I like your video's as they give me hope I can get this Ranger back on the road (its up on 36's and uses a C-6, which is the main reason Im willing to rebuild it anyways). Keep up the great video's as the help keep me going. I will keep watching.

I had a '78 King Cobra while stationed in the Army in Germany from 1982-85. I bought it from another GI who brought it over from the States. 302, 4 speed, 2bbl carb, totally stock, fastest it would go was 115mph. I did that for SEVEN STRAIGHT miles on the Autobahn. It WANTED to go faster but not enough gas and needed another gear. My dream build is another 78 King Cobra, Orange with the plaid interior but with a Coyote Motor and the 6-speed manual T56 Trans.
