ABANDONED Odeon Cinema Portsmouth North End - UPDATE 2023

We are back at the Victorian Era built Odeon Cinema at North End, Portsmouth! This is an Update video, following the recent pumping out of water that had slowly collected inside for many years. As of June 2023, the site is now currently being demolished - which is expected to take a few weeks, if not months.
The Portsmouth Odeon, having been abandoned since it's closure in 2008, is not in the best state, and some parts of the building look beyond repair. We visited the cinema back in 2020, where we waded through 3ft of water in order to explore the site. We then went back in the summer of 2021 and filmed an update video. Now in March 2023, the water has been drained, so we go back and see what once sat beneath the disgusting flood inside! Join us along the way...

That is really sad to see. As a member of 1189 Portsmouth squadron ATC band, we played on the stage before the premiere of The Battle of Britain film in 1969. Fading memories now.

Love to see. I worked here for a few years, both as staff on the cinema floor, and in marketing, so was great to see a bit more of upstairs offices (and my marketing cupboard, the red room upstairs). You also said that one of the rooms was the staff room, it was not, that was where the popcorn and freezers were stored. The old bar which you didn’t show was the staff room once, befor me turning into a party room. Finally, the room with the safe was the managers office, and the room opposite, the final staff room. My parents church at the time,, ((London Road, Baptist Church, North end)) hired screen 4 i believe for a whole month & i remember going to watch the "Jesus Film" there..." Robert Powell" played Jesus Christ, i really think that was the Best film, ever completely of Jesus Christ, life... As you were all going around, i remember seeing parts of the building... Lovely memories.. As a child, thank you for revisiting this cinema... Really injoyed watching, it brought back, lovely memories.. Thank you... From john Portsmouth

I’ve not heard anything further but a good step forward pumping the water out.

They are now starting to demolish this now, could be why the water was pumped out, so this is probably the last possible visit to here. It is a shame it is going, but at least there is a lot of documented footage of here now, and the state it was in there was no way it could have been restored cost effectively, especially with the flooding issues.

Thanks for the update. Definitely why they started to pump the water out. Such a shame but it was way beyond repair inside due to the damage. Luckily we’ve been able to document it over the last couple of years.

@@peedlejaydle That was the main foyer / entrance for the cinema. Looks like when the building team moved in temporarily to seal and board the place up, that was probably their site office they used while they were there, and the sign just still remains.

@@ExploringWithin thanks very much. Shame KZbin wasn’t around when my local cinema closed (Fareham) there are hardly any photos of the inside apart from the odd one or two. Miss the place but am glad they never tripled it like this place making those really small screens but charging the same price. Odeon would have made a wonderful one screen imax, with a great blend of traditional settings and modern film showing. Such a waste.

@@ExploringWithin i think the demolition and clearance will take some time due to the size of the building, i had a wander around today and it's the same as when you was last there. We have started foundations for 3 houses facing the street.

Hey, thanks for this, great video. I took some drone footage last night, not too much demolished yet, but the back is partly open. You and see the top of the metal structure you climb up to get to screen one and the hole in the plaster that you then climb through. I don't have a channel but happy to share the footage if you want to post it or anyone else. My mum is 84 and used to work here, she would take the q here sign out the front. @frazerlamb9769 any chance I can come to work with you for a morning :) would love to get that sign for her. Ive seen it in loads of videos of this place, but not brave enough to try to get in myself.
