This old home I have spotted along the long drive from SA to Vic and I decided to stop on this occasion to suss it out. It lies on the outskirts of a small country town. It may have initially started life as a farming house and without out doubt would have been used as a rental home in its last use. From what i can tell of the build design especially the outhouse also the interiors it seems it was built in the 1930`s or latest the early 40`s but of course i`d like you guys to help date it by coming along on the tour! Cheers for watching

Great old stove! Metters was a stove and oven making company established in 1891 in Adelaide by Frederick Metters. The "Number 2" used an enclosed fire to heat the hob above and the oven below. It had a recessed heating surface. The pots and pans were placed directly on the heating element after removing the plates covering it when not in use. I so enjoy these explorations into the past that you do. Thanks for taking us along. I learn new things; and muse anout how life was for the families, who once made these places their homes. Take care. I am eagerly waiting for your next adventure!

Hi Grace :-) Yes I have since done a lot of reading about the old stoves after finding a fair few of these Metters in South Australian homes and the old IXL ones in the Victorian homes. So very interesting and this one is in great condition. Glad you are enjoying these old places Grace I do love finding them and trying to date all of the feature. Thanks for coming along on the adventures :-)

Good solidly built house. I've never seen a ceiling medallion like that one either. The thirties type bungalow I have has the rope hung counterweights too. I learned how to repair them. Most were broken. The sound of rain on a tin roof brings back childhood memories. The old farmhouse addition had one. When the summer heat was broken by a thunderstorm we would all sit out on the porch with the windows open. The drumming on it and the smell of rain were a perfect counterpoint to the scent of fresh cut hay stacked in the barn. Those were special times. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Take care and have a great week.

Can you imagine when this was first built? How lovely it would have looked and how proud the young couple (probably) were when they moved in. Shame these places are left to rack and ruin. Our early settler history is just over 200 years old yet we're already losing so much of it through neglect, vandalism, development, fire etc. Such a shame. Thanks for this great find. 😊👌

Hi Paul! :-D I love the ceiling medallion! It's so pretty and perfectly suits a small country home. :-)The house looks like a 1930's model. :-P The old green oven added just the right pop of color to the kitchen.I like the little "cubby holes" in the mantle in the kitchen. This home was loved. A little elbow, grease a fresh coat of paint and some minor details seen to, this place would make a wonderful home again. :-) What a shame that the sheep died. :-( I have a couple of Jacob's Sheep and they are much beloved pets. Everyone who sees them are absolutely fascinated by them. lol I like the water towers at these old homes. They can be seen at a lot of old ranches here in the US . I would have hated the walk to the outhouse at night or in the rain and the cold. :-P This was a great find! :-)

Your sheep sound really cool Mary! :-) We had a goat for a while as a kid but had to rehome it as it got very rough and head butted everything lol. Could be made a home again just bring the outhouse inhouse! haha Thanks for watching :-)

It doesn't matter if the house is small if the porch is large enough to sit and listen to the rain on the tin roof or have a bite of supper outside where you can catch a bit of a breeze.A simple life in the country for a simple person. another lovely rural home that has a story to tell. Nice big rooms, the coal range that probably cooked roasts and baking. The outhouses were along way from the house bugger that going out on a stormy winters night maybe they kept a bucket for those times. For some reason I liked all the old doors in this one Bee's here in the UK are protected and if we have them in the house eves we have to leave them alone or call in the experts I suppose you have to be careful with the spiders webs your spider's are more deadly than ours here It's a clean house with spiders they eat other little creatures I have to be quick to get them out of harms way before my cats get them . Not move in ready but a little imagination and a bit of cash could make it happen. (And indoor plumbing.) The house seems to be well constructed and I liked the verandas. Also the high ceiling with air vents to divert the heat helped keep the house somewhat cool during summer months. The kitchen stove must be collectible. They are so unique. I need to go back and look at the house Miss Fisher appeared in. I really was not paying much attention until she popped up. I watch that one little clip, over and over. Says quite a bit about my life. It's ironic, I live at the beach and cannot go out in the sun. That's just not right. Cheers and have a great weekend.

Another nice old farmhouse mate! I wondered where the bathroom was and after reading some of the other comments, I had a look at the video again. I think the room is a combined laundry and bathroom.

Yep, well spotted Chris as I think that is where it was too. I think the owners lived in this place from the beginning perhaps as nothing was upgraded even the outhouse......perhaps the kitchen sink and newer oven are the only signs of upgrade. I`m estimating they passed away in the late 90`s and it was used as a rental briefly til maintaining it was not worth the cost. Just my opinion though, I love trying to figure it all out haha. Thanks for watching :-)

What a cool house, a lot of nice stuff in there. I can probably say that the house was abandoned in 2006, based on the calendar you found, but that could be much later. Thanks for the tour, Paul.

Yea this house is abandoned but at least it's not in that neighborhood where the cool old houses are, (or were) getting knocked down for the cookie cutter rubbish flats. Quite a small house, lounge, dining, kitchen & 2 bedrooms. It looks so sad with the verandah posts giving way like that. Seeing the electric hot water unit sitting outside on the veranda was pretty neat, though I'd have thought it would have been in the laundry. Who ever hacked thru the external walls would have scored a nice amount of honey and honeycomb judging by how large the holes were.

Very compact little home indeed Tim, only the verandah makes it seem larger hey. The hot water service may have been put outside to keep the old place cooler in summer hey? Glad the bees were dispatched with as it looked like a huge nest!!!!!!! lol Thanks for your support Tim :-)

The popular 'Metters Improved Stove No 2.' used an enclosed wood fire to heat a hob above and an oven below. Pots and pans could be exposed to direct heat by removing small plates recessed in the cooking surface.Metters was a brand of stoves and ovens made by Metters & Company, an Australian company established in Adelaide in 1891en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metters_LimitedIndigo, always making us do your research for you...Find it at Wiki, historic synopsis.
