I scanned through the comments quick and didn't see this mentioned. Never run the engine with drive trimmed up more than halfway. It will smoke that gimbal bearing. Also the reason marine fuel pumps are different is because when an automotive pump diaphram leaks it can weep fuel out through a hole. Gas fumes settle into the bilge and stay there, so big badda boom if fuel vapor meets ignition. That drive will probably be a milkshake because what likely happened was a shaft seal went out at some point and the water got into the gearcase and cracked it when it froze. So that problem is probably still there. Run it as long as it's fun, and then when it's not put a bigger engine in.

Thanks for the boat video, makes me feel like I am not alone in the never ending boat repairs. I have a 1988 21' Sea Swirl and last year I took my boat out once and found the floor was really soft. So I spent about 3 weeks cutting out the old floor and building in all new floor including fiber glassing it in with new carpet. Fall came so I quickly put it away in my barn and when I got it out a couple weeks ago I found I got busy and forgot to winterize it. I have a Chev 4.3 V6 and both exhaust manifolds froze and broke. Luckily I removed them and was able to weld them back up and all was fine. Time to get the boat and trailer licensed and take it out on the river. But need to get it cleaned out, this boat has a Cuddy cabin with a V bunks up front with a small sink water tank and stove. I sat down on the bed and crunch, the wood under the beds are rotten and now I have the cabin part all tore apart for new plywood and re fiber glassing. With boats it never stops. Looks like I will miss half of this summer fixing this damn boat before I can use it again.

Well, THAT was different! It was also a bloody good watch! Never knew how the exhaust and water got fired out through the propeller and it's quite fascinating to see how engineers solved the issues when developing the inboard engine's drive delivery. When something is free, it never is. Over the years I have found there are very few things that are cast off by other people that don't require a bit of fettling.....or a complete rebuild.... or that are just toast and a great example of the metaphorical doorstop....or boat anchor. That being said, with a bit of ingenuity, a steep learning curve, the help of the internet and some handy advice (along with an open wallet and / or possibly a working credit card), one can make the freebie cruise again and have a few more great memories with it - be that a car, truck, quad bike or boat - and the feeling of accomplishment that goes with it? THAT is what makes it worth while. The scenery on the lake was spectacular and such a beautiful day to take the boat out as well. Awesome job, people. Absolutely fantastic to see the old girl move under her own steam (smoke?) again. All the best.

Boat engines usually have an rubber impellor in the waterpump. With the first start up it was burned up. Secondly where the space gets smaller it pushes out water and where it gets bigger sucks it in the pump. Kevin. When working on fiberglass use a sawsall or multitool. Never an anglegrinder. Try to get hold of a 4 cyl diesel (car/excavator or so). Put a piece of flat steek between the wood. You can drill and taper the holes for the bracket and use bolts instead of woodscrews.

this sooooo explains and shows exactly what you get into when you buy (or get a free) used boat. I had a friend tell me "You know what you got there huh? A hole in the water that you throw money into." Couldn't be a more true statement. I have owned one one boat. And it was used. And I spent alot of time and money getting it water ready. So I thought. Got her ready to go.. went out (had a great time) and almost didn't make it back to the dock because of another issue that popped up. This happened 3 times. I'd fix a problem, take it out, and a new problem would arise. Finally got tired of it. Sold it as is. Learned alot about boats, but that's about it. Not a fun time at all.
