At 2:48, the item on the floor beside the saw are both used for gathering ice blocks from rivers, lakes,ponds, early form of refrigeration was ice taken during Winter, sawed into blocks, carried by the item on floor, and generally stored in ice houses packed in sawdust. To slow melting of blocks. Most homes had ice chests or boxes to keep perishables, just like modern fridge but, with more water involved. Yes, frighteningly enough I remember grandparents using one. When pronouncing Maine Conservation Corps, it's Corr. p is silent and Corp is singular.

I love Swan Island. Grew up in Bowdoinham Maine and we took field trips with our class here. I remember how huge the Bald Eagle nests were. A beautiful place!

I'm from Portland Maine! Ive never even heard of this place.. but man isn't Maine beautiful? all these little islands we have... all these islands were formed when the icecaps retracted and cut Maine up, so when you look at a geographical map of Maine it looks like claws cut the land back.. just a fun fact! :p - anyway great video guys! love the content

At 5:54 the style of architecture of this house is known as a saltbox house. It was common in the northeastern US during the time frame in which it was built. A saltbox house has two stories in the front and a single story in back.

Truly enjoyable video, Dylan. The spinning wheel was used to spin sheep's wool into yarn so it could then be knitted into sweaters and blankets.

I've lived in Richmond my entire life and as soon as I saw the caption I knew it was going to be Swan Island. There's people there literally all the time but these articles online seem to like to advertise it as this creepy abandoned ghost town 🙄
@dragoncrackers76605 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the park service ever considered that they could rent those houses to campers, like Airbnb, and that could go a long ways in preserving them. They own tuns of old homes and even towns. They just set there deteriorating. That makes no since. They could rent them for retreat get aways or seasonal camps for kids. It wouldnt take much if the island already has power.

Most of those houses are pretty clean, new padlocks, fairly new paint, bunch of antiques inside... Looks more like a guided tour of preserved and maintained houses than a truly abandoned town. That's kinda like going into an amusement park on a day when it's closed and saying it's abandoned because nobody's there.

Jeff Slttn. I thought exactly the same. Let's go on the Abandoned Island Ride. A shame.....it seems so fake :(

Agreed. Abandoned and unoccupied are two very different things. Not only does someone own all of that property, but they still mow the lawns and keep the paint fresh as well.

I grew up right here in Richmond, Maine. Fun little story, there's a ferry that goes to and from the island I believe daily, and one time my class was supposed to go to Swan Island... but the ferry sunk. so yeah, I've lived so close to swan island for so long, but I've never been there before! That's my little story.

The Great Depression was in the 30s, not the 40s; by the 40s our economy boomed because of the war. I imagine the people there farmed and sold excess to buy what they couldn't produce. Didn't see signs of any industry. Probably in the 40s the young adults left; the males into the military and others for good paying defense jobs and then nobody came back. The town, such as it was, didn't appear to have a sustaining population. The structures seem in remarkably good shape for not having been lived in for more than 60 years. Park Service probably doing some restoration. I think that tower may have been a fire watch tower, but I could be wrong.

Maine Conservation Corps is not "Maine Conservation Corpse." President Obama beat you to the punch, with that error in pronunciation. And, Swan's Island, off the coast of Mt. Desert Island, is not in northern Maine. It is in eastern Maine.
