This 1982 Volvo 242 turbo got a new lease on life recently. This is my first Kjet car and it's been a bear trying to learn the ins and outs.
Thanks for checking out the channel!

Dear Sir, you are reliving my youth as a Volvo fanatic. As earlier commenters have posted about rusty tanks, yes it happens, but you are on the right track. I noticed your fuel gauge was still reading zero after you filled it up. More than likely your fuel sender unit is gone. My experience with the "rust trail" led me to the tank with a nonfunctioning pre-pump, a clogged tank filter and a disintegrated pre-pump hose. The main fuel pump is good at pressuring the fuel to pressure, but terrible at trying to "suck" it from the tank, thus the pre-pump to energize the main fuel pump. The fuel filter that you changed was really nasty, probably never changed. But that crap and corruption came from the tank. Good choice to replace fuel accumulator, they are notorious for causing hot start problems because they don't hold residual pressure. IPD has a cheap fuel tank "bung removal" tool if you don't already have it. Makes it very easy to pull fuel sender unit. One last thing: fuel mixture. K-Jets have an O2 sensor and a "frequency valve". The frequency valve adjusts fuel pressure based on O2 readings by sending excess fuel pressure back to tank or letting pressure build to correct mixture. You can check fuel mixture very easily by "reading" the dwell cycle of the frequency valve with a good analog dwell meter and adjust it. There is a "test point" to connect to. I hope this helps, I really enjoy what you are doing and wish you and family all the best and await your next adventure.

Thank you very kindly! I did mess with the frequency valve and verify 02 function. I dont think Im getting signal out to the frequency valve! More troubleshooting is required. I will most likely replace tank and sending unit.

Good Sir, first, I'd like to commend you for preserving what appears to be the elusive Backwoods Bertone Edition of the 242! The two tone "paint job" was a key indicator in identifying this rare variant. Secondly, your resolute willingness to press on regardless and take this Regal Beauty onto the open road in order to determine (in no particular order) if there is enough fuel in the tank, that none of the wires will separate during Max Q from the aerodynamic forces, the engine will hold idle if you have to stop and, lastly, that the brakes will function so you can stop. If you have to. A true tribute to why we were given opposable thumbs instead of dolphins, who, despite being smarter than us have yet to build anything remotely resembling a 242 Turbo. Mad props to you, my young friend!
@DeanofMachines

Though I do feel badly about the dolphins and their lack of thumbs, I am sure they would appreciate how I put mine to use saving these old Swedish machines! If not for the environment then hopefully for their pure enjoyment of KZbin viewership. It is a well documented fact, if you look long enough, that dolphins do indeed a good Tube’n on a Sunday morning.

Can't wait for next episode! I hope you buy new tires for Virgos, put new rotors, pads, new brake fluid, coolant and rebuild whole fuel system - seals, orings, parts. It's classic car so i think will be cool to make it 100% works - even AC! Of course it take a lot of time and money but running 242 Turbo with K-Jet system is rare classic - most people would put later engine, big wheels and lower it...

Dean, before i acquired my current silver 84 242 Turbo in 2011 from the original owner, i had a black 81 turbo, 1st year of the turbo, and the paint on it faded in spots, mainly on the roof, probably mainly from over compounding and waxing in the sun - rookie mistakes. Both are/were m46 manuals and while the 84 is more refined, the 81 was purchased new from Savanah Intl Motors ( i was stationed at Ft Stewart from 78 to 81) and i really liked the silver cloth seats and door cards. I never replaced the wiring harnesses on the 81, it really needed it. I sold it in 2001 with around 195,000 on it and wished i had kept it. The 84 is nice, like the smaller bumpers, 5 bar oil pressure gauge, and this one came with an oil temp gauge, which is very helpful here in Texas. Keep up the great work, am looking forward to your Turbo updates. Hopefully, you can snag an intercooler for it down the road and maybe fog lights and cruise control if you can find one on Turbobricks or elsewhere. Thanks for the Sunday entertainment!

The 81 had dealer installed Bosch fog lights and I picked up a used pair of Volvo Bosch fogs for the 84 from a good supplier on Turbobricks and had them installed by a local Volvo expert here in the Houston area. Don't know if the vendor on Turbobricks still has them, believe it was Philski o'flood. Will shoot you a pic of the silver 84 242 when I get a chance.

I would suspect a rusted fuel tank... I had a 1983 B21FT turbo wagon that sat in a back yard a couple of years with an empty fuel tank before i bought it... After having the same type of malfunction as you are experimenting, i found out that the interior of the fuel tank was completly rusted and was contaminating the fuel system in addition to have the steel stand pipe of the pre-pump being desintegrated from the rust and sucking air when the fuel level was below half full... I would suggest you to remove the upper tank acces pannel, unscrew the fuel tank the quantity sending unit/pre-pump assy which will probably be u/s and check the interior of the reservoir...

My 244 turbo had a check valve on the brake booster so boost would not enter there. Noticed yours do not seem to have that. Also the distributor should have a check valve for vacuum advance.
@DeanofMachines
@DeanofMachines Ай бұрын
I will double check the vac lines when I have the intake off. I need to dig up a diagram sine much of much lines were chewed by squirrels just like the wiring harness. I think I removed the T to the gauge and ran a line directly to the boost sensor with a check valve.

@@DeanofMachines dont forget to clamp all "vacuum" lines if youre going for higher boosts. You can expect about 190hp with an intercooler and about 0,8-0,9 bar boost on a stock B21ET. It is not "fast" but fun to drive. The stock gearbox may not survive the torque for long. I truly recommend the Volvo K-kam for a redblock, with or without turbo. It just makes it a way better engine. Old school power!

In the shots with the hood up, your plenum cover was flexing in under negative pressure when you revved it. Shouldn't a turbo motor make positive pressure there. I dont know much about the kjets but that seemed odd.

how easy or hard the plate is to move, that resistance is the regulated control pressure at work

@@DeanofMachines random tips. Since it is a mechanical injection, the most you need to worry about is electrical to the fuel pump and the idle valve. The rest is pretty much unimportant when it comes to eletrrical and k-jet. Most of the electrical to other stuff is just heat elements, heating the fuel pressure regulator to compensate for cold start and stuff k-jet has an unfortunate bad reputation, I see it as analog injection. And it is more durable that people give it credit for. The one thing that k-jet is extreme sensitive for is vacuum leaks. I also mentioned check valves in anoter comment. Thats my 2 cents. 🙂

@@daw7563 yeah i know kjet, i once step in it! i have one of these, there's a video on my channel of it putting a spanking on a noisy honda. the plate on mine is harder to lift, as my car has the good rest pressure, where his has a leaky accumulator after the check valve... it's only easy to move if there's no rest pressure e.g. bad check valve on the main pump, leaky injector

Unbelievably reliable wagon that ran like new and wouldn't quit. l wish l still had it. When l saw your 2 door in the video, l had a vision of a " sleeper", but yes you're right.
