I really hope this line and other lines going around the country can be fixed and reopened because this would be a great income for some towns along the rail

I wonder how far the $700m the govt was willing to spend of a cycle bridge in Auckland would go on repairs to this line .

A beautiful lonely-quality to the landscape. Yet another corner of NZ I never got to tread. Lovely shots, very evocative.

apart from the obviousness of the line closure, what an exceptionally well constructed mini documentary: very well put together and eminently watchable :)

Thanks. Musician wrote and sang the song used in video. NZ guy Ross Turner. His name is at end of video in acknowledgements. Great song isn’t it!

There was never enough interest in the passenger side of it so it was shelved. As for the freight side, there in very little that would justify getting the line back in business. Trucks do all the logs now, and a lot cheaper and more efficiently than the rail apparently. Rail passenger runs are very few in NZ. Very few people are interested and the costs are high. For the few people it would offer work for in the long term it is not worth it. What is more important, why can't they use the Napier to Wairoa corridor as the base for a new highway instead of that awful section of road?

Very interesting, I hope they invest the money, rail is so much more environmental! Love the music :)

Looks like they'll also have to renew the track & corridor if they ever get around to reinstating that link and bridging/culverting that washout. Still fingers crossed that this Michael Wood might get the funding to get it done. It's insane that this was allowed to happen. But then again; it's insane that the governemnt while making money from tourism never looked into investing into intercity rail. Coach lines were making money so why couldn't a railcar service? Yeah of course trains cost millions each and much more than coaches, but properly maintained: They can have 45-50 years service. Trains are more comfortable and have more pleasant motion than buses and can get you between cities quicker and often for less money than a coach.

This is typically flawed thinking; while the general public tends to think in terms of passengers the rail system's raison d'être remains the carriage of freight. It has to turn a profit.

@ What makes you think I didn’t also have freight in mind? Yes noddy I am aware that freight is going to generate most revenues for Kiwirail. I worked for years in logistics.
