So the restriction placed women of menstrual age at Shabarimala can be termed as discrimination only if the only Ayyappa temple in existence is the one at Shabarimala. But there are hundreds of Ayyappa temples built on different tantric, yoga and local conceptualizations. But these activists never mind these temples . Women of all age are allowed in there.But the Shabarimala judgement takes knowingly or unknowingly it's inspiration from Semitic concepts of godhood and religion which are monolithic and focused on uniformity rather than unity in which each constituent keeps it's individuality while standing together .So the judgment is a challenge to the pagans concept of divinity. It is subversive of the pagan cultures and traditions.

I don't know whether this comment of mine will come to the notice of TG or Shajan sir. To be Frank the supreme court had no jurisdiction to entertain the petition under the writ jurisdiction. But unfortunately none of the respondents raised the issue backed by relevant position of law. Only justice indu Malhotra was right in adjudicating the issue as per law which is evident from paragraph 16 of her judgement. The issue must have got resolved through a civil court most relevantly by impleading lord Ayyappa as the first defendant for the purpose of binding. As he was not a party in the writ petition ( had he been made a party, naturally the petition must have got out side the writ jurisdiction)the judgement of the supreme court is not binding on him who is considered as a juristic person in the eyes of law. Would like to meet and discuss the matter with Mohandas Sir or Shajan sir if possible.

അന്ധവിശ്വാസം എന്ന വാക്ക് തന്നെ തെറ്റാണ്. കാരണം എല്ല വിശ്വാസവും അന്ധമാണ്. വിശ്വാസം എന്ന വാക്ക് സെമിറ്റിക് മതങ്ങളുടെ സംഭാവനയാണ്.ഹിന്ദു ധർമത്തിൽ സങ്കല്പം എന്ന വാക്കാണ് ഭക്തിയുടെ ഭാഗമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. അല്പം ഉയർന്നതലത്തിൽ സാധന ,സാധകൻ എന്ന വാക്കുകളും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. എന്താണ് വിശ്വാസവും സങ്കല്പവും തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള വ്യത്യാസം? വിശ്വാസം ശരിയെന്നോ തെറ്റാന്നോ തെളിയിക്കണ്ട കാര്യം ഉണ്ട്. സൻകൽപ്പത്തിൽ അതിന്റെ ആവശ്യം ഇല്ല. ഒന്നുകിൽ അതിനെ സ്വീകരിക്കാം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ തള്ളിക്കളയാം. സാധാനയുടെ ഭാഗമായിട്ടാണ് ഇത്തരം സങ്കല്പങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. ശബരിമലയുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ നിശച്ചിത കാല അള വിൽ സന്യാസവൃതം ആണ് സങ്കല്പം.അപ്പോൾ സ്വഭാവികമായും മൂർത്തി യെ അവിടെ നൈഷ്ഠിക ബ്രഹ്മചരിയായി സങ്കല്പിച്ചു. ഇതിനെ അംഗീകരിക്കാം തള്ളിക്കളയാം .ഇതിൽ താൽപര്യ മില്ലാത്തവർക്കു മറ്റു അയ്യപ്പ സങ്കല്പത്തിലേക്കു പോകാം . കാരണം ശബരിമലയിലെ അയ്യപ്പസങ്കല്പം അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നില്ലെങ്കിൽ അങ്ങോട്ടു പോകുന്നതിൽ അർത്ഥമില്ല. അവിടെ ആരാധന സെമിറ്റിക് മതങ്ങളെ പോലെ വിശ്വാസത്തിൽ അധിഷ്ഠിതമല്ല.ഇനി സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു അയ്യപ്പ സങ്കല്പംഉണ്ടാക്കാം.ഇതിനു സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം ഉള്ള ഏക ജീവിച്ചരിക്കുന്ന ആത്മീയ പാരമ്പര്യം ഹിന്ദു ധർമ്മം മാത്രമാണ്. അതിനെ കോടതിയും ആക്ടിവ്‌സ്‌വും കൊണ്ടു നേരിടുന്നത് സെമിറ്റിക് മതങ്ങളുടെ ഏക രൂപതയെ ലോകം.മുഴുവൻ അടിച്ചു ഏല്പിക്കലാണ്. ലോക ശാന്തിക്കും ബഹുസ്വരതയ്ക്കും അനിവാര്യ മായ ദൈവ വൈ വിധ്യത്തെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കൽ ആണ്.

Menstruation across Cultures attempts to provide a detailed review of menstruation notions prevalent in India and in cultures from across the world. The world cultures covered in the book include Indic traditions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism; ancient civilisations like Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia and Egypt; and Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Shabarimala and what is at stake By Shyam Krishna Kumar The discourse around the recent Sabarimala verdict clearly shows what is wrong with a hegemonic modernity and rationalit for cc fory that refuses to see its own limits and forces all plurality into conformity. It feels like the civilizing mission all over again, with the “enlightened”, “rational”, “progressive” elites sitting in judgment over “medieval”, “backward”, “regressive” men and women. Oh those barbarous men and women! Surely they need to come out of their heathen stupor and embrace the light of Reason and the holy book of the constitution. Or else. They have to be forcefully saved, for their own good of course. What other ways of understanding life and organizing practices can dare exist in the light of modern, enlightened rationality? Surely, there is no cruelty in ripping apart what people hold dearer than their own lives. We are witnessing a new iconoclasm at play. For those who believe the verdict is about patriarchy, rights of women or a similar argument, there are enough voices and pieces who have taken the trouble to explain what the actual issues surrounding Sabarimala are. Advocate Sai Deepak’s brilliant arguments, which he employed in court as well, are particularly worth exploring. On the question of patriarchy and women’s rights vis-a-vis Sabarimala, I wish to put across two things. Every other temple of Ayyappa, except Sabarimala, is open to all genders. Further, in a country where there has been no history, let alone current practice, of excluding women from the lakhs of temples across the entire country, making the argument that this is driven by patriarchy or menstrual taboo does not wash. Especially when there are temples and festivals that exclude men and temples like Kamakhya where the Devi is considered to be menstruating. Equality is not sameness and diversity does not necessarily mean discrimination. What is more worrying however is the general level of unawareness about the fundamental Dharmic principles behind the Sabarimala case, principles which apply across Sanatana Dharma. Therefore, this article does not focus on the legalities of this case as such, but the key Dharmic principles obscured or ignored in the discourse surrounding this issue. The Temple is Not a Public Space Temples are not spaces where people gather together for communion. A temple is the abode of the devata, who has been invoked through prana pratishtha during the temple’s consecration. After consecration, the Devata lives in the murti and the temple is His/ Her abode. Therefore Sabarimala, Ayyappa’s abode, his writ runs, whether it pleases one’s modernist ideals or not. If this idea sounds outlandish, you can choose not to subscribe to it. In that case, as you are not a devotee, you have no business getting involved anyway. There is No Question of Rights in a Temple The construct of rights simply does not mean anything in the context of a temple. At His abode, you serve at the pleasure of the deity, if he wants it and definitely how he wants it. There is only adhikaratva, not rights. How does one know what the Devata wants? To understand the will of the deity of a particular temple, we refer to the Agamas that govern the functioning of the temple. They clearly describe the processes to be followed in that particular temple. The Agamas are not ‘mythology’ or irrational medieval remnants to be washed out with progress. Why Should One Respect the Agama? The Agamas describe how a particular deity is to be invoked, how the consecration is to be maintained, what the specific dimension of Shakti invoked is, and the processes to benefit from the presence of the Shakti and what is to be avoided. Therefore it’s important to understand Agamas as manuals describing highly specific processes to manifest Shakti to create specific effects than as a set of arbitrary commandments. Taking an analogy, the Agama would be closer to a user manual to manage complex technology than to a piece of fictional literature. Further, it is the Agama that reveals the various forms of deities. For example, the Shiva Agamas describe various facets of Shiva from the lovable Bholenath to the utterly terrifying kalabhairava. What works with one form will not work with another because the nature of each Shakti is different. It is through the Agama that we come to know specific forms of deities, how they are to be invoked and what processes have to be performed to sustain their presence and derive wellbeing for all. Improper processes can at best lead to no benefit for devotees. In some cases they can cause terrible damage. This is not an arbitrary ‘wrath of god’ but rather the consequences of not handling Shakti properly. Without Agama, we would not know our Devatas Without Agamas, we would not even know there is a devata called Ayyappa who resides in Sabarimala, let alone how to worship him. Taking one part of the Agama and believing in Ayyappa but rejecting what doesn’t suit our ego investments can only be termed as idiocy and hubris. It is an Asuric mindset to say that I will violate the will and express intent of the deity in every way because I love them. In human terms, this would be termed assault. Fortunately, most Devatas are usually much kinder about human madness. Not all of them and not always, however. The Discourse Assumes That Ayyappa is Fiction The nature and tone of the discourse and the judgement clearly take for granted that Ayyappa is fiction; fiction that a group wishes to follow and the courts and discourse will endearingly try playing along. There is no other explanation for the fact that in the very abode of the deity, his will is violated. The assumption seems to be that since Ayyappa is merely imagined, the way children have imaginary friends, he can be reimagined in any which way. Therefore, why not create a ‘new mythology’ more palatable to our current tastes? For devotees to whom Ayyappa is a living reality and not some imaginary friend, this is a clear problem. Marauders with No Skin in the Game A sickening aspect of this sordid episode is people who have no stake in the lived reality of millions barge in and disrupt what means the most to them. People who wouldn’t have heard of Ayyappa till a few years ago, let alone cared, are the ones who approach courts and intervene in the lives of practitioners. This despicable pattern has played out in Shani Shingnapur and multiple other places. The voices of the women devotees, the ones to whom entry to the temple was supposed to matter were ignored amidst the din raised by elite banshees. Lived practices and ways of life were brutally trampled upon by a deracinated, mentally colonized, modernity worshipping bunch of elites who imposed their worldview simply because they could, because they wield power and because they drink the cocktail of hubris, certain of their

TG is great. I like him and respect his wisdom. But, however, I am of the strong view that as a customary ritual being followed from time immemorial, and of course considering the peculiarity of the presiding Diety, young ladies within the stipulated age span should not go and climb holy steps.

TG is very smart & articulate. But I do not agree w him on Sabarimala. Tradition is important. SC was wrong. Hope the ruling gets overturned bcos SC or legal system should not interfere w cultural heritage and age old practices. Plus I believe Sinu Joseph’s findings about effect on women’s health. Why does not TG believe her findings?

I choose to disagree with TG on Sabarimala issue. There is a social element which no one seems to address. If a drunkard is willing to keep away from drinks for 41 days why not? This issue is not restricted to one point. There are so many other aspects which no one seems to speak. Why?

The very word blind belief is wrong . Because all beliefs are blind up to some extent. The word belief is a creation of the semitic religions . In Hinduism and other pagan traditions the devotional framework is sankalpa ( auspicious mentation). Hinduism uses the word baktha ( devotee). At a higher level, words like sadhaka are used. What is the difference between belief and sankalpa? Belief is something which has to be proven wrong and right. But in the case of sankalpa , we can accept it or reject it . These sanklpas are framed and attuned in tune with yogic and Tantric concepts. In the case of Lord Ayyappa, he is conceptualized as a confirmed celebate . Hence , a devotee wishing to go on a pilgrimage to Shabarimala is required to undergo a penance of sanyasa vritha 41 days ( vows , discipline and spiritual activities meant for a Hindu monk). So ,naturally, the deity there is a one conceptualized as a celebrate yogi. We have the freedom to accept this type of concept of the Lord Ayyappa or not.Those not interested in this Ayyappa frame work can go to temples following different Ayyappa concepts. Neither is there any point in going to temples in whose tantric and yogic concepts we are not interested. Hinduism gives the freedom to everyone to create or choose an ishta devatha ( a god or goddess of ones own inkling) . To try to destroy it using political activism and constitutional measures based on political correctness is to the uniformity of the Semitic religions injurious to polyphony and pluralism. It is also violative of theo-diversity which is essential for world peace and pluralism .
