There was no outcry. If you get the meaning of the song, the guy is telling the young girl that she should not be wherever she is (disco or whatever) looking for the kind of fun she is not supposed to be involved in at that age, and he’s asking her if her mother knows where she is... in other words, he’s saying to her, okay I’ll humour you but I’m not going to cross any lines because you are way too young.

ABBA is unique in the completely different music styles (and combinations of styles) they used in every song. They never played safe with repeating the last hit in some kind. You can listen to a lot of tracks (there are ±115 songs..) to get what I mean! And the lyrics, well these were the 'innocent 70ties' lol. ABBA was really the true face of that. They didn't do drugs or rough parties, didn't smash hotel rooms, étc. Just 2 lame married couples who made the best pop in history!

While other rockers were sleeping with 13 and 14 year old groupies, ABBA were singing "that's no way to go, does your mother know" It is a very cute take on it and still very ABBA.

I was 10 years old when this track came out and I had no idea of the lyrics. I just loved (and still do) Abba. One tune that probably would be controversal today is " When I kissed the teacher". Still love Abba 45 years later.

Yes, nothing of sexual nature was any big deal in the 1970s/80s Sweden. (As opposed to today, where the world has gone hyper moralistic, religious, and in general back to the middle ages again.) Making money was controversial though, and that's what the press and progressive bands accused Abba for :D

Oh my gosh! At first I thought this comment was from me, ha ha because I just wrote one saying I was about 10 years old when I first heard this song. I was at a roller skating rink and they played this song but I had no idea what they were saying or the title of the song so I went up to the guy playing the records to ask him what the name of the song was. (I already knew who ABBA was). But, like you, I had no idea what the lyrics were saying - I just LOVED the tune and beat and I still do. Most times I love songs for their music rather than the words - half the time I don’t even listen to the words until I’ve heard the song a million times, ha ha.

This is my favorite Abba song, so catchy and the girls make the song great. The boys rarely sing lead on a song, just once in a while. Yes it's racy but he is turning the groupie down, unlike what the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin would have done. Frida never looked hotter than in this video.

Good day Harry! and congratulations on your reaction "Does your mother know" It was the second single from the sixth album "Voulez vous" peaked at #4 in the U.K. it's a good rock demonstrating the versatility of ABBA's musical genres (the live version is amazing with the most powerful "Hole in your soul") upbeat melody from Benny, good lead voice from Björn, vocal harmonies and a powerful chorus from the flawless Agnetha and Frida I agree that it has something of the spirit of "Waterloo": its joy and power (but "Waterloo" is iconic, magical, epic, a work of art; I wait for you reaction, at the Eurovisión Song Contest is lovely)

A lot of the public just think of Dancing Queen, or Fernando etc when they think of ABBA, but there is SO much more to the band than that. They were not at all 'safe'- that's just a misperception, as this song shows. They have countless other 'risque' songs eg. When I Kissed The Teacher. But it was the 1970s and cultural norms were different then so I don't remember there being any controversy about 'Does Your Mother Know'. Sadly we've moved into an overly politically correct era where even the recent 'ABBA' movie Mamma Mia 2 changed the lyrics of 'When I Kissed The Teacher' to make it more acceptable. That's sad, in my humble opinion. I'm new to your channel, Harry, and I like how you genuinely listen to songs so I have subscribed. Thanks for going down the ABBA rabbit hole. You'll have many surprises. In fact, do you know they actually wrote about YOU in the song 'Our Last Summer'? LOL.

There are some songs that are hardly being played on the radio though they are beautiful. Check just for your private interest „Hasta manana“ - „I am the city“ - „You owe me one“ - „If it wasn’t for the nights“ - „I am just a girl“ (Agnetha) - „Dance (while the music still goes on)“ - „Bang a boomerang“ - „Me and I“ (person with split personality) - „Watch out“ (Hard Rock) - „Put on your white sombrero“ - „Cassandra“ or „Like an angel passing through my room“, the last three ones by Frida‘s lower voice. May Abba bring you some special feelings !

I don't remember any outcry at that time , because the song is about an older person refusing to go for what has been offered, and showing good moral character. Times were different then and I don't think now you could even show this issue without some kind of blowback just from the suggestiveness, even if the singer did the right thing. Also most of the band members were in their 30's at this time and an 18 year old could be considered young to them, considering their superstar atatus in the late 70's and the people who would be throwing themselves at the band members.

some context data: the video is from April 5 and 6, 1979 (They also filmed "Voulez vous" those same days) curiously those two days were: Agnetha's 29th birthday and the fifth anniversary of unforgettable and momentous ABBA triumph in the Eurovision Song Contest (with their most iconic song "Waterloo") the blonde singer Agnetha and Björn (here the lead voice) were already separated since the end of 1978 (with two young children) what will be legal divorce in 1980 It must have been a very difficult birthday for Agnetha; but still, here she looks beautiful and radiant

In Sweden kids and young people meet at kiosk or gas station. Because they could not go to the pub or to the disco. Anyways once in a while younger girls sneak into those places and then this happens. It's a song that most people in Sweden can be relating to as when they were younger.

The Who guitarist Pete Townshend has said "SOS" is one of the best pop songs ever written, adding that when he first heard the song he "was transported by it". Ray Davies of The Kinks said that he was taken with the song after seeing the group perform it on the BBC television show Seaside Special. John Lennon has also said the same about ABBA´'s song "SOS" So a reaction to this may not be entirely wrong. 🧐

If you think this was racy you should check out their song Two For The Price Of One from the Dick Cavett Show, now that is a little risque until you near the end of the song where it all becomes clear. No outcry, no controversy, in short the guy in the song was saying you are to young for this, go home. If this song was such a shock to your system then you probably better not listen to "Young Girl" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, you would have a major melt down right on the spot. But that song deals with a situation where the girl is passing herself off as much older than she is. When the man in the song finds out he tells her to go back home to her momma even though at that point he is emotionally invested in the relationship. Actually it is a great song, here is a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3uph4Oud9WYsM0

Abba's lyrics were never as innocent or vacuous as they were frequently portrayed by critics in the '70s, Bjorn wrote the vast majority of the lyrics and, particularly in the later years, as his facility with and sophistication with the English language increased they can be quite odd. Remember, he wrote a great many of them for his wife (later ex-wife) Agnetha to sing. For perhaps the raciest Abba lyrics listen to the song Tiger; imagine if Robert Plant had sung that song there would have been protests ... the video version from Abba the Movie is perhaps the best.

Again I like you´re reaction. Thank you for that. The late 60s and the 70s some see them as a sexual liberation. In comparison to the zeitgeist then, it seems pretty much harmless. (look at glamrock or punk)At the time when this song came out they have great success but they weren´t regarded as a group who has really much to say. Even, or might I say especially in their own country Sweden the people almost hate them. Theese times you had to be political. The songs survived!!! of course. Because they are well composed and arranged. The trick is they seemed to be easy ( you can sing along with them almost the first second you hear them) but they are much more complicatet and deap in a musical way.

Interestingly, the young girl ref is always risky. Young Girl by Gary Pucket and the Union Gap actually makes him the victim of a Lolita type (yuck) and worst of all, My Sharona by the Knack. I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind. Seriously! They were such catchy songs and teenage girls responded. But it's not good that 30 y.o. men are using these lyrics. Abba, more cautionary. Interesting time in music for sure.

It sounds like real life to me. Awkward dynamics sometime arise. I don't recall any controversy at the time, though I do remember a rash of school boards being upset about "Another Brick in the Wall" (Pink Floyd) around the same time! 1979

@@HarriBestReactions Many school districts and school boards, in the US and abroad (South Africa, where the song became an anthem for many schoolchildren) tried to have the song "Another Brick in the Wall (pt. 2)" banned from the radio, because the lyrics "We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control...etc." alarmed them. The song was very popular, and many educators were not happy about it, especially with an entire classroom of kids singing the second verse on the recording.

I do not think it is suggestive at all, the problem is in the person who listens to it & how he or she perceives it. This is a fabulous classic, a well written song from my area - if you are shocked then it is time for you to look at yourself as i am sure others do not see it in the same manner. If you find this shocking might i suggest that you should go listen to so good old glam rock like "The Sweet" little willy kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH6ZemCmortjiKM or Wig Wam Bam kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKqld6ugoq-Dp80 again do not take it as suggestive just enjoy a well writing peace of music ie the song..

I don't get it. The lyrics to this song are definitely NOT racy, in anyway, shape or form?!. In fact, they're the exact opposite. They're telling the girl that she's too young to be where she is, & does her mamma know where she is and what's she doing. Jeez, I'm glad I was born when I was (1964), & not after. It seems the generation after mine are shocked by the slightest thing. Anyhoo, Abba "Does Your Mamma Know"..... Great song, even enjoyed your reaction, although I found it slightly odd. 😊👍🤪🎼🎶🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️

He is being responsible. Think about it. She is too young. You are way off on this one. This song created no controversy. It is nothing about the band being bad.

So sad & pathetic to see u totally misunderstood the song's lyrics and delivered us an opinion landing on an absolute opposite side. Thumbs Down mate.

Wow my guy you need to tone it down, saying omg the cops are going to be knocking down my door! Wtf are you serious, are you that much of a prude the song isn't even about that you took it there, even pausing the video when that part came up just ruined the whole reaction, damn dude relax lol.

No controversy as far as I remember. You seem like a neat guy but I really disliked how many times you repeat the word "suggestive". Too much political correctness from your behalf.
