When we heard these songs as ABBA churned them out, we just accepted that this was ALL their sound. They always sounded versatile and it was always the tight and fabulous harmonies together with the instrumentation that made us know instantly that it was ABBA we we hearing. No mechanics in Björn’s voice, they’re all just super talented! And THAT is ABBA! 😊

Bjorn’s voice was not altered or processed on this at all. This was originally meant to be a song for Agnetha but at the last minute they changed the lyrics and Bjorn took the vocal lead instead.... it has been noted that it was still in the original key meant for Agnetha so when Bjorn went to record his vocals he had to really stretch and strain his voice to hit the notes, hence the “grit”. What you should react to next is the “ABBA undeleted” medley. It is crammed full of demos, unreleased tracks, and earlier studio out-takes including the original version of this song. Listening to this medley will blow your bananas and short circuit your Derrick Approval button.

I love your reaction, Dereck! It's so fun to watch you when you're getting really surprised by ABBA over and over again :) This is ABBA in their early years when they still were more into a rock-isch style, like "Waterloo". The drummer on this song is Roger Palm. He also played on several other ABBA-hits later on, among them Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia. He and Ola Brunkert altered as ABBA-drummers, but I believe that Ola were the most frequent drummer in ABBA, both in studio and on tours. Another ABBA-song from the same album, "ABBA", that might surprise you is "Hey hey Helen".

The first three ABBA albums involve them searching for their own sound. It seems they found it and adapted it to cover most musical genres in their career. 'ABBA' from which 'Rock Me' was taken was probably the most cohesive attempt to find their own sound though they dabbled in Pop (Mamma Mia, sos, Bang-A-Boomerang, I've Been Waiting For You) Rock (Hey Hey Helen), Reggae (Tropical Loveland), Funk (Man In The Middle), Big Band Schlager(I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do), glam rock (So Long, Rock Me) and prog rock instrumental (Intemezzo No 1). The use of Bjorn vocally who'd been a very successful singer in his own right in 1960's Sweden with his band Hootenanny Singers and as a solo artist was to add variation and a different feel to the ABBA song. Infact the only Studio album he doesn't have some form of leadvocal on was 1980's 'Super Touper'. 'Rock Me' however, was performed on all three major ABBA tours in 1974/75, 1977 and 1979.

Early ABBA was very, 'experimental', in that they tried all kinds of styles to try and appeal to the pop record buying public. The one thing I love about this particular song is that it's instantly recognisable as ABBA as soon as the keyboard and vocals kick in. Bjorn's vocals have that gritty sound to them, as I think he's trying to sound a bit like Slade's Noddy Holder! This song never fails to get the hairs on the back of my neck standing up! It's great!

The clip you chose to view for 'Rock Me' was actually for the German TV show 'Musikladen'. ABBA performed a bunch of their early songs for this special to play back. There are a few other TV Playback performances for 'Rock Me'. Bjorn & Benny apparently wanted it as an A-side single. Personally I don't feel its one of their best when you listen to it with stuff after 1976 but, I don't hate it and for the team, it was a very currrent 70's sound, possibly influenced by the British glam rock period and bands like Slade, Sweet Etc.
