Abba - Under Attack (for Marielle - Fridnetha)

This video is for my good friend Marielle who lives in Manila. Marielle is a great Abba fan as you can see from her channel "fridnetha". She has been doing videos for their music since early 2007, and has done extremely well for someone so young. You may have seen the terrible floods that have just occurred in the last few days in Manila. I will be sending her my donation, and I hope that we can help Marielle and her family to recover from these devastating floods. Here is Marielle's own words on how these floods have suddenly affected her life.
Hello Uncle John..
Heavy rain came again last night here. Sad to say, our area reached the flood. Our appliances was damaged and no one is functioning. My books and school supplies also get drowned, and also my school uniform, and my shoes also. And also my ABBA collections. I dont know what to do, all I did is to cry and cry. Nothing left..right now, we're here in internet shop. I told it to you Uncle cos i know you may help me. Please help me, cos my mother has nothing already right now due to the storm. Never thought it would happen to us, cos last Sunday, the flood did not reach us. But yesterday, it happend suddenly. Hoping for your help uncle. I dont have father so i tried to approach you. Thank GODBLESS

Marielle is in need of clothes, food, school supplies, school uniform and books, as all her possessions were lost in the floods. They are only existing on relief food at present. All donations will be gratefully received, every bit helps however small. The currency is the Philippine Peso, department stores are still open. This performance of Under Attack is from the popular German tv program Show Express broadcast live from Saarlandhalle, Saarbrucken at 7.30pm on November 11 1982. At the end of the show all the guests took a bow one by one with ABBA bringing up the rear - they were then mobbed by the audience! Under Attack was recorded on August 2 1982 at Polar Studios Stockholm. This was Abba's 28th and last single being released on December 3 1982 in UK and on February 21 1983 elsewhere. It was later added as a bonus track to the cd release of Abba's last album "The Visitors". Under Attack was not a commercial success making only #26 in UK and #96 in Australia, and the top 5 in Belgium and Holland only.
Benny's comments: "Under Attack is a wonderful recording, and it has a lot of nice little elements within it, like a bass synth line that I worked on forever. Some people have suggested that there is a lack of warmth in this song, partly because of the way the vocals are treated and because things were moving to digital from analogue. But we had been working with digital technology for a while, and the Vocoder we used to treat the vocals was just for fun."
Bjorn's comments: "The sound of the vocals of Under Attack is very much of the 1980's, that Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" style. But the melody of the chorus is much more 1960's, even 1950's. And the counter-melody is very effective. I think its a really good recording and had it been released a year earlier it would have been a number one. I wasn't feeling under attack personally. The title was just a good hook and dictated the rest of the lyric. I think it was very much the craftsman at work."

this is quite emotional.......the end.....but nice to see Agnetha and Frida coming together in their performance....they could be quite 'distant' in their performances during the Abba years.....

Yes this is a fantastic song and performance. The audience can't help joining in with the singalong feeling that they create with their great rhythm, hand clapping and dancing! You can hardly keep still yourself watching this!

Yes the longer they went on, the more musically intricate and clever their songs became. Nobody else produced stage managed entertaining performances like Abba did for their songs - the audience can't help joining in!

Yes it would be impossible to have a wonderful performance like this today, with the audience joining in so enthusiatically to a great singalong song by a great group. Abba put as much emphasis into their visual performances as they did to everything else they did - it had to be as good as they could possibly get it for their fans!

All donations to that disaster area would be very welcome Bill, so well done to you! I saw the flood waters in Manila on tv looked very deep and fast with things being swept away, and knew that Marielle lived there so checked out if she was ok. Fortunately she's survived, but not without major loss. Doing this video was the quickest and widest way I could think of to help her. We did have huge floods in Gloucestershire in July & August 2007, I thought it was impossible - but it happened!

Many thanks Isabelle, its good that we can use our common love of Abba to help one of our young friends at a critical time. I know Marielle has now received some of the assistance sent by the Abba community, and things are starting to get back to normal for her at home and at school. She did have a good Abba collection, but life itself is always more important as possessions can always be rebuilt Yep they did do a song called Move On - that one is still on my 'to do' list!.

Its one of the best performances I've seen from anyone - there would be no chance of anything like this today. This song is very uplifting when you're feeling down like Marielle has been with the floods that hit Manila. Thanks for doing that Dallas, and many thanks for sharing this video onwards. I saw the pictiures on tv, the river was swelled by 2 dams that burst and was like a torrent sweeping everything in its path away. The water was head high in the streets. Marielle does know that we will help her, so that will give her some comfort. She may be the longest continuous Abba supporter here, having joined on Jan 1 2007! I'll be praying that things work out alright, this week will be hardest to get through.

These floods seem to strike anywhere more frequently and with greater devastation each year Shay. The balance of nature is what's under attack. We even had floods here for a month in 2007 when the River Severn plane spread at least 10 miles, but it was not as fast as this has happened in Manila.

Hi Christian, yes Bjorn has said this song would have been #1 if it had been released a year earlier. By the time it was released their popularity was in semi decline. Yes you couldn't help but be struck by some of those pictures showing how quickly it had all happened Elin. Marielle thought they were safe where they lived, but the flood waters still reached them unfortunately.
