Lincoln started out as a nightclub singer, but began performing in a style influenced by the civil rights movement after she met drummer/bebop pioneer Max Roach. Originally broadcast in 1986 and 1987.

this has to be the coolest thing i’ve found on the internet in a while. a black woman standing up for her beliefs, she went on to talk about femininity and perfectionism. what rejecting masochism meant for her in the 50s of all generations? abbey lincoln has officially stolen my heart, what an inspiring and intelligent person.

I've been kowing about Abbey Lincoln for many years. Many of my favorite artists used to talk about her in interviews, interludes so her name and her voice were familiar but I never really paid attention to her...then about a year ago, I was watching an interview of a woman on the YT channel Style like u. This 70s y.o woman with an eccentric, unique, original style explained that she cut her hair to a short afro in the 60s when she saw Abbey Lincoln on TV. I decided to seriously look for her and I've been hooked ever since. I'm pretty sure I have seen every videos about her on YT and been listening to her music nonstop. It's such a joy to feel moved by an artist just when you think your taste is set. This interview solidified this point ! Thank you.
