Considering the fact that it’s been confirmed that the reason the gang is at Abbot for volunteer work, I could definitely see this crossover being a result of Frank having supplied Diddy with the baby oil. The article by an environmentalist reporter, so maybe Frank was trying to get rid of all the leftover baby oil by dumping it somewhere to hide his involvement with Diddy. The gang gets involved and they all get arrested as a result, with them all being sentenced to community service as their punishment.

Just because both shows take place in Philly and sorta feature the working class doesn't mean that they need to crossover!? These aren't shows like the CW stuff (Arrowverse), crime dramas (FBI, NCIS) or even shows on Disney channel that can blend together like peanut butter and jelly. All the characters in It's Always Sunny are essentially despicable individuals, while Abbott has hopeful individuals that try to be uplifting. Plus, one is a network sitcom while the other is a general comedy show that is heavily mature.
