Michael sold 50% of the ATV (Beatles & other artists) catalog to Sony in 1995. He still owned the other 50% up until his death. Michael's Estate now obviously owns his share and receives the royalties from that catalog.

He was not really broke, But somehow he was before he died. But he gain alot of money again after his death, I think he is the highest earning celebrity dead now. He has the catalog for beatles, elvis etc.

@vicious321: Exactly! I read an article where his financial situation actually has a little 'catch' phrase. It's called being "asset rich, but cash poor." In other words, had he chosen to sell some of his assets, he would have been able to pay off his debts & still have income coming in & be able to live a good life.

As others have said, Michael Jackson was cash poor, but asset rich in his final years. It is important to remember that most artists in the music industry earn the bulk of their money these days not through album sales (as sales have dropped dramatically due to illegal downloading) but through live concert tours. MJ last toured in 1997! So his income had dropped in that time, and his spending probably didn't reduce enough. If he wanted to he could have sold his assets and had a tonne of money.

Michael had debts but his assets was way more!! He didn't sell the Sony/ATV catalog cuz he wanted to leave it for his children and receive royalties each year. But after he's being robbed at death those catalogs were sold back to Sony and appear on iTune mysteriously.

I am only interested in facts. It is true that his profligacy, combined with the 1500 lawsuits that he faced over the years hurt him.He did sell half of the ATV catalog to SONY. It will be interesting to see if his Estate can buy that back for his children as well as the ranch which I last heard had 87% interest in.

Maybe because I've supported MJ for years and also prior his death is why I maybe naive to the fact that his popularity was decreased in the latter years..maybe in the States..but whenever I've seen MJ made an appearance somewhere..there was always Mayhem..so I don't know about that..maybe thats a debate..but its really not important.The point is a Great Talent has left us who gave and left the world so much art.He dedicated his Life to his Art..He deserves a veritable outlook on his Life.

However, MJ wisely didn't sell his assets. If he did, he could have easily paid off his debts and still had a few hundred million dollars to live on. Instead he decided to tour again, thereby making the necessary money - instead of selling off his prized assets.

Yeah blackaristo, I also wonder how much money they'll try to steal..or um, excuse me...ASK for, for the purchase of the ATV catalog back. As for the ranch, personally, I doubt the kids will want it back after they've learned just what their father went through there and how he saw it as just a house and no longer a home. Too many good, yet, bad memories there also.
