What it would look like if the Department of Education was eliminated?

Some of the first questions that were brought up after President-Elect Donald Trump made his desires clear - to get Washington’s influence out of schools and hand control over to the states - included: What happens to special education funding? Or Title I funding for low-income families? What about enforcing civil rights in schools? Those are all things the Department of Education oversees right now, a department the president-elect wants to eliminate. The decision isn't only up to Trump. Congress would have to repeal the law that created the department back in 1979.

Since I'm an old fellow and I remember what the world was like 50 and 60 years ago, I remember that it was legal for a bank to refuse to issue a loan to a woman. I remember when it was legal for a landlord to refuse to rent to minorities. The world was not wonderful, and education was not wonderful. The Department of Education used to be part of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare - THAT's why the schools "ran perfectly well and the doors stayed open and the lights stayed on" - the federal department of education actually existed, even then. HEW was created in 1953.

The problem with your theory is that a teacher could be the best in the world and if their students have learning disabilities or borderline or low iq’s then the teacher would look like a terrible teacher and not make any gains. At the same time a terrible lazy teacher could have gifted and way above average students and they would look like an excellent teacher based on their test scores. You can’t necessarily judge a teachers performance on how well their students score on test.

The Department of Ed was created in 1979 under Jimmy Carter. The purpose was to ensure and enforce education funding for special needs, civil rights and low income school (Title 1). If they eliminate the Department of Ed truly nothing happens because schools are already controlled by the states as far as curriculum. The only question I have is since the Dept of education is closing and they are also in charge of student loans, would they still owe. I am saying the department wouldn't exist anymore. 😅

Each STATE gets to decide on what curriculum will be taught. Each STATE gets to decide on the "infrastructure", as you put it, of their educational system. I’m a retired teacher and agree that the Department of Education does way more harm than good. It is a big waste of money and time. I sincerely believe that the Washington bureaucracy spends most of its time coming up with forms and reports to justify their jobs that require teachers to waste time completing that could be better spent actually developing good lessons. It also stifles innovation and doesn’t recognize different states have different needs.

The way that the Maryland schools are now they can’t get much worse. You have kids who are graduating high school who don’t know how to read or do basic math. And special Ed Gould even worse. I should know I was visually impaired students in Maryland public school. The teachers ignored me. You didn’t want to teach me and I was bullied in school also. this was implemented in 1979. I was 12. All it means is everything they are worried about is turned over to the state. Not the federal government. To get or keep any federal monies the school and/or the state would have to show that students meet requirements or education levels. Parents will be more involved. If you don't like something going on in your kids' school, you can report it to your county and your state.

Teachers do not need more money. They already get a full-year's pay for nine months of work, gold-plated benefits and a defined-benefit pension. No, we spend far too much for what we are getting. The Dept of Education simply takes tax dollars from all taxpayers and redistributes them according to the whims of politicians who pick winners and losers (fiscally) among the states. Because of the way the Federal Govt borrows money, this creates about $.40 worth of debt for every dollar taken in, but less than $.60 goes back to the schools. So we are adding to the debt for no good reason.

What undermines the Department of Education and Teachers Unions are the abysmal scores students are getting. Either something is wrong with "public schools" or more than half the kids are defective. In my state less than 50% can read or do math at grade level. Our standing in education as compared to other nations is often abysmal. Even the Somalis in Tim Walz state decided to vote for Trump because of plummeting performance. Hoping RFK Jr can exercise some real power in helping make kids healthy again and School Administrators need to start raising their standards instead of lowering them. Reinstitute College Exams and let Universities which produce grads that can't pay their student loans be obligated to help before ANYONE else.
