It’s been almost a decade since my last treatment and my family and I are still paying off my medical debt. If we were in worse financial circumstances I literally would have died. They now use an AI system with an over 90 percent inaccuracy rate to auto deny claims. I also work in a hospital and at least once a week I see someone get denied coverage (by someone or something without a medical degree) for a course of treatment that a doctor prescribed for them because it is not deemed “medically necessary.” If a doctor prescribed it, it’s usually pretty damn necessary, but apparently insurance companies know more about a person’s diagnosis than their literal doctors.

To be realistic it just is. Even in the insurance industry the CEO's life is worth more than yours and that is in writing. When car companies are aware that one of vehicle models are killing people they weigh up what fixing or buying back those vehicles would cost against what their insurance actuaries think they may have to pay out to victims. Even companies like Ford have in the past carried on selling defective cars knowing that they will have to compensate victims (Pinto). Not sure what the price of an ordinary persons life is these days but I can remember a time when it was about 40K. The CEO's life is worth millions. It's all cold hard cash to them and those big payouts you read about are a rare exception.

The stalking charge is pissing me off and absolutely inappropriate- almost as inappropriate as the terrorism charge. From what I’ve read, to be charged with stalking, the victim has to be aware of the stalking in such a way as to be in reasonable fear of injury or death. Yet in the surveillance footage, Brian Thompson had ZERO security with him at the time of the murder, his gait was aloof and unguarded- not typical behavior of someone fearing for their life. Granted, his widow did say he was receiving threats, but it would be unjustified to assume those threats were made by Mangione (unless they have proof and haven’t released them to the public, though I doubt it.) Hopefully, Karen will make a point of this. It’s unwarranted and unfair.
