I was in tears watching this. THIS IS NOT OK!!! How is this legal in our country?!?! I watched Josh Green at a live say that NO family will be left homeless with the reopening. THIS doesn't look like what he said!! These families GoFundMe should be listed on your page here for us to help. I love you sweet people. ❤

@@river4462 if they have a mortgage, they have to have hazard insurance. If they can’t afford or qualify to get a policy on their own, then the mortgage will take out lender placed insurance to protect their interest. In turn that outrageous fee will be applied to their mortgage payment but it only covers the structure and nothing else. So I’m thinking if any of them had mortgages, they probably got insurance through their lender not knowing it’s costs more for less coverage. Sad.

Here's the thing, Maui, for better or for worse, is heavily dependent on tourism. Lahainatown is where the fire happened. South Maui, Kihei, Wailea...were NOT affected by the fire but they're losing millions. Ka'anapali was not affected but has been closed by the government. They're reopening in phases. FEMA and the Red Cross are putting some people up in the hotels in Ka'anapali beach and elsewhere. Many of the big hotel chains who also own timeshares in Maui have housed their own and made sure their employees are signed up for all available assistance. These same hotels have let people who simply aren't ready to come back to work stay home. Some of the local chains have paid their staff in spite of them being closed. Slowly they're repoening. The media is doing NO favors by saying there are protestors and no one wants visitors. That simply is NOT true. go to Maui. Tip generously. Go out to eat, go on guided tours. THAT'S how they come back. The Hawaiian people are strong and resilient. They deserve their land and help. Maui No Ka Oi.
@lillieberger2883

They only survive with tourists money. Almost everyone that lives there works in some fashion for the tourist industry. The whole state cannot survive without tourism. I love Lahaina, it was my favorite place on any of the islands. Why are we not rebuilding this town for them? Our federal government cares more about illegal border crossers than our own citizens. Where is FEMA? They should be able to put up shelter for every single family that lost a home while the rubble is cleared and we help them rebuild.

Sadly, so many people do not feel the same as you. All they see is the inconvenience of having to change their vacation plans. Or the ones who grumbled initially that their accommodations were canceled. They are so self-involved that they can't and don't see the big picture. All they see is how this affected them. Shameful. Truly Shameful. And worse. Are the tourists who purposely travel to locations. Such as Lahaina. To see the destruction. They get off on seeing things like this. They find it enjoyable, and fun to do. Those folks, IMHO are subhuman. I'm hoping that anyone who chooses to travel to Maui. They take a good look inside of themselves. And determine what is the bigger priority. Go to Maui. Knowing full well that Maui has so much more to offer. And make that conscious decision to NOT travel to the West Side. And make arrangements elsewhere. Giving the West Side Community the time and space they deserve to grieve for THEIR losses. Rebuild their homes and lives. To care for their devastated children and other family members. Or, go. And expect aloha to be bestowed upon you by a few thousand of the most emotionally damaged, financially devastated, disrespected, heartbroken, and traumatized AMERICANS you will probably ever meet again in your life. Oh, and don't get pissed off when there seems to be a disproportionate amount of homeless FAMILIES on the beach in front of your hotel.......the choice is yours. I hope you choose humanity.....( @sonja619purrsnpoms4 ...I'm sorry for hijacking your comment. I tend to get wordy sometimes. And this was in no way meant as an attack on you personally. I'm sure the tourist that visits parts of Maui will be confronted by locals and it might not be a really great vacation at this time. The Maui county officials wants to reopen as they have a home to go to.Not the Lahaina victims. The county really needs the money from outsiders to fill the void to run the system. The county wont release any information about the fire and timeline on what events happened on that very day,8/8/23. The Mayor was suppose be in charge but he said,"I don't know who was in charge" What kind of answer is that? To much critical information being held and this is how victims are treated. People need to know that Maui county officials emergency response was a failure.Nobody really knew what to do.The sirens were never sounded,water was not available for the MFD,roads leading out of the burning area were blocked by police.

@@YourTransmissionRepair Most Homeowners insurance will not cover this disaster. What happened was a borderline result of a Hurricane to our south which caused windstorms through canyons and the grass was already tinder dry due to long periods of draught. Many homeowners companies refuse to cover Hawaii at all, like many parts of California. Much of whether or not you get coverage is dependent on where you live. Plus County Government seems to be stunned. It was a sort of perfect storm, and relief has been remarkably slow.

We have Ohana on Oahu and totally love Maui. This horrible tragedy is heartbraking. It is so emotional trying to decide when to re store tourism to West Maui. Everyone has different needs economically and when to go back to work, there is no easy answer. The local,state,and federal governments are making this even more difficult. The federal government giving multi billions $ to foreign allies. American citizens need that economic aid now to recover and re start their lives. Take care of the people of Maui first then start giving again to allies. Maui No Ka Oi ! Maui Strong !!

As a resident of Hawaii, this is always in the front of our minds. How to balance tourism which would fund much of the recovery of Lahaina in opposition to the lives of the people of West Maui. Rents have skyrocketed on the Valley Isle. Many will doubtless have to leave, since Maui was one of the most expensive places in the State. I am glad I am not sitting in Mayor Bissen's chair right now.

But as alway having my eyes on Maui, because I was born there. Both Maui and Paradise are horrifically ugly to the homeless population. And now they get a sence of that feeling of utter helplessness. Homeless people are people who have gone through trauma, just like them. The whole of Lahaina and Paradise are on equal ground. And there are still camp fire survivors in 2023 that are being treated like dirt. Treat people with respect and dignity. And the ones who are no well, be nice.

She lost her business and her home. She still has her land where her house was but I guess she needed to get away and sort out what she's going to do next.. My prayers are with all the people affected by the fire. She did tell me that there was no conspiracy on how the fire started. true, the fires weren't started by lasers from space etc. The winds were so strong Lahana never had a chance. Too many conspiracies. If sirens were sounded and the people were evacuated many lives would have been saved but the fire itself wasn't extinguishable even if they had hundreds more firefighters. HECO doesn't deserve all the blame from not diglently trimming the trees because some of the power lines fell on grass and the mini fire fanned by the gale winds ignited nearby bush.

I'm happy someone from Lahaina said this because people are so unrealistic expecting the government officials to be everywhere at once. They criticize the failing infrastructure but are unwilling to raise taxes to upgrade it. There was not much they could do because of how fast the fire moved through that area. Sirens still would not have saved many of the people who died. It' s not like it's a hurricane or a tornado and you can find absolute shelter. It's a fire! Fire burns nearly every type of material there is. Many of the people who tried to flee were burned alive in their cars! I just wish people would be a part of the solution instead of constantly pointing fingers at the gov officials. If they are so affected by this, perhaps they should run for office, be on the front lines, and be the first in line for blame when the next inevitable natural disaster occurs. It's so sad that this happened but at this point, people need to do something to help clean up and rebuild or shut up about. Geez.

They will have their homes replaced if they have insurance to cover it or they take out FEMA loans.But it’s going to take time. They have to clean everything up and get basic services restored first.And that seven hundred was only to immediately help buy some basic necessities. No other president did that immediately after a disaster. And the president never said that.Many people and organizations have been donating food and clothing,generators and other items.. And They have been offered FEMA loans and loans from the better business bureau for rebuilding businesses. That’s what the government usually offers after disasters. So obviously more than that seven hundred has been offered to them..I am surprised they are still paying for hotel rooms instead of building tent cities or shacks for them to stay in temporarily.They need to do that soon.

From Oklahoma the last big tornado we were in hit our neighborhood it took a week to get it cleaned up and no one missed a day of work. No one was put in hotels if they lost their homes, you just have to figure it out like an adult. Red cross was there for like 3 days giving sandwiches and water then after they were like yea bye figure it out. I mean this is truly a tragedy but my mind was blown how much help they got. And in no way am I saying they shouldn't help them im more talking shite on what they don't do. These services are supposed to help but really do the least amount.

I'm from Louisiana, we help our neighbors clean up and start rebuilding. Our churches, sheriffs office, etc, feed people and provide temporary shelter or whatever is available. We do whatever it takes to get back on our feet and move on. The key part is to move on because you don't want to perpetuate the trauma of the experience. Just be grateful that you survived and have the opportunity to live another day..

When my house flooded with 10ft of water one year I received FEMA money the first month(one payment) and that's it. A local hotel was offering reduced rates to stay so I got a single night there because it was $88. The other 8 days my three kids and I were sleeping in our car or on friend's floors. We never knew where we'd sleep each night.We paid for that single night in a hotel the night before Easter so that the Easter Bunny could come visit them. But they still went to school and I still went to work. Life moved on because there was no other choice.

My heart goes out to all these suffering people. I am a tourist who has a trip there planned coming up. I have gotten so many different answers "please come back and support us" to "we're not ready, stay away" and I dont know what to do. This news story is making it clear what the correct answer is. I have non refundable travel arrangements and even got trip insurance which they ARE NOT HONORING but i will talk to my credit card company about cancellation of the payment and will try to go elsewhere. I can't afford to book something else and lose the original money. I guess i could just not go and lose all of it? 😔 I dont know what to do. That said my struggles are NOTHING compared to what anyone in Maui is experiencing so i cant complain.

No one goes into Lahaina…they aren’t even letting residents go into Lahaina. Charles is an angry man. Everyone gave from their hearts to these people, who did lose so much. The trouble is that was an in the moment thing. They were given shelter by the kindness of so many. That was always going to be a temporary thing. The people of west Maui, who didn’t lose their homes in the fire, are now expected to forfeit their lives just because the people of Lahaina did? Why is that fair? I’m up here and the locals up here are afraid to say what they do acknowledge: they want to open. They want to work. They have family too, that they need to feed, to support. This is a really unkind thing that ABC News is promulgating. They are making things much worse.

I’ve seen more leadership at the community level in Maui County than in the entirety of Honolulu, so while those on the ground in Maui have appealed to the elected, the majority of who prioritized a substantial pay raise for themselves, they have failed to listen to, and to do what is in the best interest for those in West Maui. I hope anyone who organized and helped others run for the highest offices at the local, state, and federal governments. Hawaii cannot rely exclusively on tourism for the economy.

@zaharralane3753
@zaharralane3753 Жыл бұрын
@@vernonsheldon-witter1225 That is a very good question, and I would ask those who experienced the Maui fire because they know what was needed immediately and what was lacking; and I would ask those who protect, preserve, and perpetuate Hawaiian culture, because any proposals should be conducive to the cultural heritage of Hawaii. I can speculate that Hawaii can invest in disaster preparedness: adequate shelters, PPE, and whatever else is flown in or shipped to the islands after natural disasters, the healthcare industry, agriculture, affordable housing, infrastructure development, sustainable clean energy and technology.

Now it seems to be just a tourist destination. Americans of ALL political persuasions need to get it together.
