In the 1960s Australian band The Seekers took the world by storm when their first three releases went to the top of the UK charts, knocking the Beatles out of the number one spot along the way. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
Lead singer Judith Durham was the heartbeat of their unique sound, a blend of harmonising voices that saw them become the first Australian band to score a number one hit in the US with the iconic “Georgy Girl”.
In 2019, all four band members - Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger - spoke for the first time to Australian Story about fame and fallout.
Now, following Judith’s death this year, her bandmates and her sister speak about her enduring musical legacy and personal resilience.

I'm a man of 76 years and when the news broke Judith had died. I cried. This beautiful voice that was just as good in her 70s had left me. Off course she belonged to us all. What we have left are the outstanding recordings and recorded shows. When I need a lift I reach for The Seekers records. I very often watch their last concert . My eyes just focus on Judith. The Seekers with the unforgettable Judith Durham were just. Wonderful .

@@christine7772 That crystal clear voice never goes out of my head, along with that beautiful face of hers. What a combination. I'm a bloke and I was in tears at the news. We know she wasn't well, but not having her around walking on this earth anymore, was still a shock. Like everyone here, I grew up with The Seekers. I felt for the boys she worked with all those years, and her sister.

Her solo rendering of The Olive Tree in the 60's, really sent me, also The Carnival Is Over, the tune was an adaptation of a Russian song & Take me to the Emerald City I heard on a vinyl. I discovered Northern Lights which I feel could have been used in the background for The Shetland series - would not have been out of place. Will we ever hear such a beautifull voice again, I wonder. She will beautifully haunt the music world for ever. Her mother should be forever proud of her and I am sure she is. Judith despite her health challenges, had a very beautiful voice that will never be forgotten.

Nine days before Judith Durham died, Tom Springfield passed aged 88 unnoticed by the press. If the Seekers had not bumped into him, had their hit "I'll Never Find Another You and many subsequent hits, A World Of Our Own, Georgy Girl, The Carnival is Over etc written by him for them they would probably have gone back on that cruise ship to Australia another talented but unknown pop/ folk band.

What a moving tribute and passionate telling of Judith and the Seekers. I was but a small girl in the 60s, but now at 59, I love these individuals who treated the world with such beautiful and wholesome music. You should know that my husband and I are nearing retirement and in a few years will live in the peace and seclusion of my husband's family place in the piney woods of east Texas. It is here that we are "building a world of our own" and we call our place "Fade Away Away Farm" because those words of that song are a picture of how we will live in our senior years. Thank you for your gift of music, and thank you, Judith, for many years devoted to making the lives of so many so very happy through your gift.

Hi,Deborah, I live in Scotland, but several years ago my wife and I visited her brother in Fort Worth. We went on a round trip down through Austin to San Antonio, across to Houston and Galveston and back through the Piney Woods stopping at Nacogdoches - a memorable trip. I’ve been a fan of The Seekers since the 1960s and nowadays listen to them everyday, including Judith’s solo work - her range is remarkable and, like you, I feel privileged to be able to listen to her. Have a happy retirement in ‘ a world of your own’. Regards, Martin.

This is a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing. Judith corresponded with me from July 2013 to July 2019, we had a close bond. Judith was such a beautiful lady, inside and out. Her beautiful, angelic voice touched the hearts of so many worldwide. I had heard of Olivia Newton John's passing. But. The death of Judith shocked me. I cried and cried. Because like so many others who were enamored by her courage, beautiful vocal and loveliness, I was taken aback by the news of her death. I feel comfortable sharing here, because like myself, I know that all of us here, we all loved Judith Durham. A woman who touched and changed so many lives and brought joy and touched people's hearts. ✨️. She will always be remembered, Neverending would be the best way to express the love for her.🌹💞⚘️

I was born in London in 1955 and loved pop/rock music from babyhood. The Seekers really did put Australia on the world musical map. And Judith Durham had the voice of an angel. It breaks my heart that she died too young but also that the UK newspapers reported the story about 2 days before the Australian papers reported it; and the Sydney Morning Herald didn't bother reporting it at all. I was a journalist for over 35 years and the Herald's lack of acknowledgment at the death of one of their own makes me sick. So glad I am now retired.

200,000 at the Myer Music Bowl might be an understatement. The helicopter shots of the crowd were well before the concert before the crowds really built up. So the noise of the helicopter would not interfere with the concert. There is a recording of the announcer, Jeff McConas on stage introducing the whole concert saying that he thought there were 500,000. We really don't know an exact figure as it was a free concert, as were all Myer Music Bowl concerts then, so no ticket check. If estimated from the helicopter shot then it was underestimated.

@zachmartin1458 Either were The Seekers. I knew about Judy Jacques before Judith Durham at that time. But I'm 7 years younger than Judith. Frank was known on TV mainly as a country and western singer? Not sure, as our family did not have a TV until 1964. Judy should have replaced Durham. She was a terrific gospel jazz blues singer.

They did have a minor hit with Waltzing Matilda, but nothing really major. I thought they had a bigger hit than that.

Had the Seekers not broken up in 1968 they quite probably would have been recognized as history's greatest group. Judith Durhams natural modesty was overcome when she asserted that The Seekers were "Totally Unique." That is the understatement for the ages. Name another group that had four performers who could sing and play at that level!! Led by the incomparable Judith Durham. Easy, elegant and effortless. Had they been British they would have skyrocketed past the Beatles. As a British group they would have had mainstream exposure. As it was they sold over 50 million records in three years!! Durham was at the forefront. Nobody ever had a sweeter voice with such effortless grace. Like a female Nat King Cole. When she left the critical mass they created faded. Under different circumstances The Seekers would have been the biggest band ever. The most unique sound ever created. Even The Beatles were "Hit and Miss." The Seekers never hit a sour note. Cranking out mediocre material just to feed the cash box. No better group existed.

One further comment, John Lennon asserting that The Seekers were "A Nice little group, but they come to see us," is unfortunate. When Elvis met The Beatles it is common knowledge that he hated John Lennon. For obvious reasons!! Lennon was a horses ass that should have been born in a barn. Chalk it up to professional jealousy. As for coming to see The Beatles, The Seekers once appeared before crowds of over 200,000!! Viewing recording sessions of The Seekers, each member had a voice that shined on its own. With proper promotion they could have all been solo stars. Most of all, no finer pop singer ever lived than Judith Durham. Her British contemporaries Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark didn't compare to her. The only peers she would have had as a solo artist were Aretha Franklin and the glorious country singer Patsy Cline. Durham would have still outshone them both. These videos are a revelation into a singer whose gifts outshone them all. At least to anyone with ears and a brain to reason with. Unbelievably, Durham suffered a lung ailment as a child that only worsened with time. Imagine her with a voice even greater than the one she already possessed!! It's little surprise that her three male band mates mourned the group breaking up in 1968. They knew they were intertwined with a talent like no other. And an even finer person. Which is more than can be said for John Lennon the horse's pitooey.

Um ,its great that you love the seekers. But to say they would have been the greatest group of all time ,is a bit of a stretch. To say they were greater than the Beatles is purely subjective. And if your talking about 4 individuals, then that was the Beatles. And they dis not sell 50 million records in 3 years

In one further comment, my apologies to Matthew Ashman. When responding to an opinion, it is critical to get the name right. In any event, it's fun to debate the merits of these great groups.

4 days later, one of Australia's other beautiful singers died...ONJ. My two fave female singers, but out of the two, Judith, at one stage one of the most beautiful (girl next door) women in Australia back in the 60's, was always my favourite. But, I finally got to see the Seekers in 1998 at the Entertainment Ctr, in Adelaide here...was worth the wait, and worth every cent I paid for the tickets. I was devastated when Judith died, and also ONJ.

The Seekers were my Mum’s generation. I still cried like a baby when Judith passed. Her voice was THE purest I’ve ever heard. What I’d give to be able to go back in time to their gigs ❤️‍🔥
