Not sure where you're from (if you're American then you'll know better than me), but I've been told that for some Native Americans the term 'Native American' is a bit like 'Latinx'..........they grew up calling themselves Indians and don't feel they should have to change it because some (mostly) white elites decided it was offensive. As an Australian I feel more comfortable saying 'Native American', but I think it's more complicated than it looks from outside (and fwiw, since I don't like un-self-awarely criticising Americans, I also don't know for sure how many older Indigenous Australians actually agreed we should retire the word 'Aborigine', but I can certainly imagine a language change like that be forced on people)
