As someone who works in Whitehall, my advice is look, don't touch - these are working horses and the guards are not to be messed with - Don't do it - trust me i've seen all sorts happen and it can get real ugly. And for Gods sake don't think the guards are for show, they are professional soldiers and know their stuff. ~Trooper

The first person he bit thought the horse liked her. The man who tried to pet the horse after the horse nipped at him thought it was a game. The touron who thought the horse was going to kiss her was right- he dropped her face onto concrete in horse manure. Who wants to bet she went to the other horse to see if it would kiss her also. Completely disagree, it is a tourist attraction and generates a lot of interest worldwide and money. People DO go to see the horses and the soldiers in their immaculately presented uniforms, they are a true credit to the British Forces. There are warning signs, but no proper risk assessment or people would be kept at a safe distance. The risk of biting or kicking is quite serious, so even if someone is injured, there is a failure to comply with various Health & Safety Laws. The sign is also in one language only - which should also be noted on any risk assessment. The Guard is in charge of the animal and can still be held liable if they fail to keep proper control which results in their own or injury to others. It's fortunate no one has tried to take legal action, but it is only a matter of time... Government Buildings in the UK do NOT have any insurance policies, so when there is damage, theft or loss, we pay for it via taxes. When people claim for accidents they have or injuries caused by something that was not being controlled, they are just paid out to shut them up. Most cases have an agreed settlement to make them go away. I used to see this for people tripping on stairs, claiming there were no signs warning they might, also people slipping outside buildings because there was no grit or snow was not cleared. Welcome to the World of Health & Safety and vile people that will claim for what they can!!!

That horse wasn’t messing - it’s ears went back every time it lunged at intrusive tourists. It was sending a clear message - don’t come any closer. The horse “told her” once, if she chose to ignore it cos that all important holiday snap was way more important then she’s no one but herself to blame. Some people just don’t understand the sort of damage a horse can do. It can’t say “I say madam, would you mind awfully leaving me alone” but it can send clear signals which only a fool would ignore. She chose to ignore the sign on the wall, she chose to ignore the guard and, more importantly, she chose to ignore the horse. That’s a lesson she won’t forget in a hurry but it could have been a lot worse if an angry horse had really sunk those big teeth attached to a very powerful jaw right in She’s just lucky the guard reacted quickly otherwise the horse might have used its iron shod hooves too. Just with people horses chose who they like too and, as the guard said, that horse likes him and, as the rider, that’s how it should be.

Honestly, she looked like she was trying to be close enough for a picture, but not too close. I don't think she realized just how far the horse could reach! At least she wasn't right in his face, like so many others try to be. He must have grabbed her pretty hard to pull her over like that.

@@melissachatwin9673 People unfamiliar with horses do not realize how fast they can move, nor how far they can reach. People see dogs all the time and still are clueless about how to approach a dog they don't know safely. Why would you expect them to be able to read a horse? (I'm more than a little familiar with both, btw)
