I had a VW and never felt good about valve adjustments, in spite of frequent "practice." I have never "missed" that. Glad to see your success!

Well both Rusty the snowcat and Abel have mechanical diesels which can run without a battery so there is that benefit....

Ahhh another sunny Oregon morning:) to add, while you are in there you can easily check/confirm the injector height/timing measurement with a vernier caliper that has a probe on it(most do). They list the injectors that you check on the sheet along with the valves for a given crank revolution. With the dial zeroed with the probe flush with the end of the caliper, extend the probe and measure from the top of the injector tappet/spring cover beside the rocker arm, down along side the spring to the flat top of the shoulder of the injector base. You can see the shoulder easily if you look down beside the injector on the intake/exhaust manifold side of the head. The injector height/timing spec for the engine is listed in MM in the lower left corner of the performance spec sticker on the valve cover. My 225 HP 3116 says 65.64MM +/- 0.2mm or 2.584” +/- .007”. These should all be very close to each other but are as easy to adjust as the valves are if they are out of wack. I checked mine when I did my valves and the two forward cylinders were different than the rest…
@SeanFillner2 жыл бұрын
That adjustment would be above my head and I had it done with the HP upgrade when I swapped the turbo and governor for the 290hp setup. Seeing as the valves did not move much at all I am not going to mess with those injectors...
@frazzledude2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. The sticker on the 3116 in my generator set specifies 170 horsepower and an injector height of 64.56 mm. The difference is probably because of the different horsepower rating and the fact that the engine runs at a constant speed of 1,800 RPM.
@rronmar2 жыл бұрын
@@frazzledude well it is only 170HP because it is limited to 1800RPM. But at 1800RPM that height may be the optimum timing for efficiency/peak HP. Wonder what governor and turbo your generator 3116 uses? 80-85KW? Thats a big Genny:)

I didn't know Cat numbers their cylinders backwards. Nice. Looks like the engine bars over easy enough (or maybe Willow is really strong). Always learning on this channel. If you watch the injector rockers you can see which cylinder is coming up on TDC- might make getting the alignment dowe- SCREWDRIVER - installed a little easier. About valve adjustments- the worst case scenario from lack of adjustments would probably be tight exhaust valves. As the valve/valve seats wear, they sink into the head and lose their clearance. Eventually the valve won't close all the way which causes it to overheat and burn (looking at you Honda).

I would like to avoid a burnt cylinder...it was the technical manual and it did not make sense to me at first...

Yours is so much easier to do than my 3116 because yours is on a cabover lmtv military truck mine is on a c6500 regular truck so the two or three cylinders on the back of engine are underneath the c a b and I've been I'm getting ready to do this to all of my 31/16 I have I have a total of 3 and I have one 3126 that I plan on selling
