This is why Nepal continues to use the official Bikram Sambat calendar instead of the Catholic calendar. Most people in Nepal are either unaware of or have no interest in the Catholic calendar. After the monarchy was overthrown, some leaders tried to impose the Catholic calendar, but the people of Nepal firmly rejected it. We don’t need to conform to a foreign system. I hope India will also move towards adopting the Bikram Sambat calendar, embracing its own heritage and breaking free from the lingering influence of foreign occupation.

In 772 the caliphate of Baghdad invited several Indian mathematicians to teach them Hindu mathematics. In early 13th century Fibonacci, who learned Indian mathematics while living with his father in what is now Algeria, to Italy. There he wrote a book describing Indian numbers and mathematics and how to use it for trade and business. Even before that Moors in Spain had invited several Indian scholars to Spain to teach them and translate all knowledge about Hindu math, astronomy, astrology etc. That was, I believe in 8th or 9th century. At that time Europeans could not understand the concept of zero. The Roman church declared the concept of zero an “ invention of devil. It took 7 or 8 hundred years before they understood the importance of zero.

During my school days I was confused why we are getting Dussehra, Diwali in different months and dates every year. Sometimes diwali is too cold other times moderate. And the onset of Rainy and Summer season, every year the month and date deviates. I met Astrologer many times they have software which calulated the tithi, nakshatra, Rashi very minutely. Rashi of person changes in 10-15 minutes and thats how the letter for name is decided. In western world they have same zodiac signs for whole month.

This is an excellent mini-documentary. Dr. Raju is amazing with his empirical and wise explanation. He makes it easy for those who, like me, do not know Mathematics. The forcing of a religious calendar onto those colonized is part of the Imperialistic strategy. The methods the British used to rule those whom they colonized is, frankly, quite spectacular. The ones colonized are only now beginning to rise up and reclaim themselves, their cultures and their authenticity. Thank you, Abhijit, for bringing Dr. Raju to us. This must be circulated often and on various venues by bringing Dr. Raju on again, discussing various aspects of the Calendar. One example is the fact that 400 years were just 'eaten up' when the Julian was switched over to the Gregorian. Also, I ask for an interactive session where listeners can write in comments on a live recording or even call in. It will be fascinating to hear the questions and comments from the listeners and hear Dr.Raju's explanations. It will give us an idea about how educated the public are, and how much more needs to be done. Thanks you again, Abhijit. My aadar bhari pranam to Dr. Raju and to you.

A version of what PROF. Raju is saying! The reason July and August each have 31 days dates back to ancient Rome and the reforms of the Julian calendar by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE. The original Roman calendar had fewer months and days, leading to an inconsistent system that needed regular adjustments. Caesar’s reform established a 365-day calendar with a leap year every four years, assigning most months 30 or 31 days, except February, which varied in leap years. July was named in honor of Julius Caesar, who designated it as a 31-day month. Later, when Caesar Augustus came to power, the month after July was renamed August to honor him. To ensure August was not shorter than July, it was also given 31 days. Some sources suggest that Augustus added a day to August by borrowing from February to keep the calendar balanced and prevent any perceived dishonor between his month and Caesar’s .

Sir, The beginning of Kali yug is assumed to be 3102 BCE (using Christian calendar reference) because most planets had aligned in one place, as stated by Aryabhat-1, this aspect and date is contested. It can be seen from the latest software, dated backwards to this epoch. SB Dixit in his book on the history of Indian astronomy, written in 1886, says more research needs to be done. Astronomical mentions are made in the Vedic period, including the year's composition. This is earlier than 1500 BCE. The Vedang period is dated around 1500 BCE and later. Here more detailed explanations of calendars are found. The auspiciousness of a time, mentioned in Rgved Samhita 7.88.4, is necessary to do anything. With the available technology, we should be able to relook at our ancient texts.
