WOW, you reaction here is just so beautiful, you are such a wonderful person. The depth of the tragedy and inhumanity of the Holocaust gets me every time I concentrate on it; the trauma to those who survived it is unimagineable. One of the things which differentiates the Holocaust from so many destructive eras or collective traumas is that the Holocaust occurred 'during' a war, but it wasn't even a portion of that war. What I mean by that is that the wars are of course terrible, and all innocent victims of wars have gone through something horrible (no matter what side they were on, or are on), but Jews being targetted for an extermination wasn't even part of the German war effort ---- Jews weren't targetted because they or their leaders were in a military conflict with Germany or even had a political conflict, they were targetted just because the Nazis wanted to exterminate them, and often DESPITE the military conflict going on. In fact, at critical points, the Nazis diverted resources from the war effort against the Allies, because they wanted to exterminate more Jews. We have rebuilt, both in Israel and in America, but at the same time, what was lost can never be truly recovered. Thank you for treating this with the seriousness and empathy that it deserves.

Ok. Abie Rotenberg is known for his songwriting. He has composed dozens of songs in Hebrew and English over the past 40 or so years, many of which have become classics in our circles. I remember this song from back in the 80s. Many genXers in our community like myself grew up with grandparents who were survivors, The Holocaust was constantly present in our consciousness, so this song really hits home. And yes, we knew about it even as small children, there was no avoiding it. For us, it wasn't a subject taught in school,, it was part of our life. This performance took place years after the song was first released and was delivered by two of the most prominent singers in Jewish music (MBD & Avraham Fried) at what is considered to be a prestigious annual music event. The video was projected during the performance. The old man in the video is not Abie, but he probably is a bona fide Holocaust survivor. The song itself is very heavy and powerful, Abie Rotenberg definitely does not pull his punches here. This is an important response to the persistent and insidious movement of Holocaust denial. You would be surprised how many people actually buy into this propaganda. I haven't heard this song is years, and watching it now was like a gut punch. as real as it gets, and so relatable for someone with my background. Great review.

The Holocaust is part of the very fabric of our collective memory we didn't need history lessons we grew up revering survivers. They were our grandparents and/or great aunts and uncles. You may have noticed a lot is holocaust memories in Orthodox music. Man from Vilna this song and many others.

Ya, I can definitely see how you would learn about this as you were growing up. Your families are your history teachers, and that's a valuable thing to have. Even though I have no "skin in the game" as they would say, for me those pictures hit hard, so I can only imagine the impact for the Jewish people.

"Heavy" is certainly one way to describe the song. It's sad, poignant, and hopeful. A bunch of other people have explained most of what's going on here, but I'll do my share: - Abie Rottenberg is known as a song writer and lyricist. He does sing on some of his albums, and I've seen him sing and play live during a concert. But I don't know of many videos of his going around; he's not much of a self-promoter. - This song is from Abie's _Journeys_ album series, Volume 2 (1993). On the album recording, it is (mostly) his voice. Most of the songs, and most of Abie's in general, are in English, with strong Jewish themes. - This recording is (I'm pretty) from a concert in 1998 on behalf of an organization named Ohel. The performers at that concert included singers like Avraham Fried and Mordechai ben David, both of whom you've seen in other performances, and it is those two performing together in this song. My understanding is that these visuals were shown on the screens during the performance, and the recordings of the concert, as sold on VHS and DVD, show only those visuals for this song instead of the live performance like the rest of the concert, except at the very end when you caught a glimpse of them. If you like the style of song, and want to hear more of Abie's stuff, check him out on Spotify or KZbin, though most will not be music videos. Here is a ling to a live (private) performance _Little Kite,_ recommended by so many others: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2HcnqyerbR9fqM. It is in English, with (almost) no Hebrew or Yiddish words.

Abie Rottenberg is best known for his compositions, many which are in English. He has released 5 albums of English songs under the title Journeys. He started writing English songs because he was at an event where he was asked to lead singing and many non-religious attendees were unable to follow along. Holocaust denial is a baffling concept to me as well, but it's an unfortunate reality. I have an elderly neighbor who lived through the Holocaust, and he saw his family members slaughtered when he was a child. He recently self-published a book of his life to allow his grandkids and great grandkids to remember where they came from.

Hey, a few things: Abie doesn’t make an appearance here. The singers are Mordechai Ben David (the one you’re not so into) and Avraham Fried (whose Tanya song you seemed to love). That said, Abie is an amazing singer and prolific composer, so I won’t complain if you decide to do one of his pieces. (Sure, Little Kite should work.) Now, Mordechai Ben David (MBD) is known as the King of Jewish Music. He is fantastic in both English and Yiddish. But he’s getting old and his voice isn’t what it used to be. When you hear his tapes from the 80’s and 90’s, your mind will be changed. That’s a guarantee. I recommend that you peruse his other stuff. Finally, I’m not a fan of the “video”; it’s a series of Holocaust pictures that don’t convey the full horror (it’s a kid’s song!) but also don’t allow me to show my young kids the video. It’s neither here nor there. Anyways, keep it up. These are lots of fun.

In general some Holocaust survivors never ever talked about their experiences and some did as much as possible, when I was 7 years old I went to a old age home to cheer up the elders there and one of the ladies there told me one of her memories and I remember every word she said, since then I read as much about the Holocaust as I could, people sometimes put it together with other genocides but absolutely nothing comes close to the atrocities if the Holocaust.

Wow. Thanks for doing this song. It *is* indeed very heavy, as it is remembering the Holocaust that wasn't that long ago. Abie Rotenberg has lots and lots of english songs he wrote (the man from vilna etc.), usually performed at Hasc concerts. (Hasc is a camp for special needs children, and they do a yearly concert, featuring over the years most Jewish singers). Abie actually has a very nice deep voice, definitely check out him singing. This performance was around 25 years ago (if I'm not mistaken at an "Ohel" concert - another organisation for special needs).

This must be one of my favorite songs of all time, that still delivers a gut-punch every time I listen to it. As much as I'm a fan of Mordechai Ben David and Avraham Fried, I find they don't do the song justice in this version. Abie Rottenberg has an incredible talent for storytelling through music and his original version with Abie's unique warm voice is still my personal favorite. Loving your reactions to Jewish music! Abie Rotenberg is known most for the way he attaches the perfect emotion and feeling into his compositions with his lyrics. This video was put together years ago from a live musical performance by Mordechai Ben David and Avraham Fried even longer ago, hence the bad recording etc. Most of the Jewish communities around now descend from survivors of the holocaust, and it's something just about every Jewish child comes to know about from a young age; even if just because their grandparents or great-grandparents were either killed during, or are survivors of, the holocaust.

Your open mind and attention to detail in both the music and religion is beyond entertaining! One idea (not related to this particular video) - because of people's personal taste in the comments and KZbin recs, sometimes you're not getting the best representation of an artist (for example a more random not great or old song/performance). Maybe consider having someone familiar with the industry to help select the best options of the artist you want to cover? (I'm a bit of a Jewish Music aficionado and would be happy to help... I'm sure there are others too) Thanks for the incredible content!

What you said about not telling these things to young kids, that's such a good point. There's loads of intergenerational trauma that the Jewish community of this generation is still recovering from, and I think a strong aspect of it is by how orthodox Jewish kids are taught from a very young age how we were betrayed and almost anihillated, which results in a general fear and mistrust of outsiders.

The video quality is bad, but the music, vocals and harmonies are absolutely stunning. It is composed and arranged by Yishai Lapidot, an Israeli singer that is known for his adult choir named Oif Simchas, and his children's choir Kinderlach. This particular video is Yishai Lapidot as the lead singer, along with a few singers in Israel that were popular years ago. Towards the end is a harmony that reaches such beautiful high notes. It is sung by Ohad Moskowitz who has since produced many of his own albums. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYmokmeforZnp7s

Thanks for your reactions, always a thrill listening to it. And also a huge thanks for reacting successfully to some of my recommendations in the past This particular vid. Memories - competes with pseudo-live performances of today's days which are track recorded, enhanced and cleaned in a studio prior to publishing so it doesn't really do justice to those two Giants, performing a "real" live performance with all of its shortcomings. MBD is the King for a reason, and you are yet to react to one of many that will actually do justice to his name. Nonetheless, being in the line of reacting to Jewish music it will be a shame not to include the most famous composer/storyteller/ spiritual influencer of the century, the one and only late Rabbi Shlome Carlebach... It is difficult to pick a nice live clip which encapsulates his entire persona (he never produced professional productions as other typical performers) however, there is one I came across that might shine some light on his glory. It is a 45min clip though, so it's up to you whether or not to skim through the entire clip in your reaction or just part of it. Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGGooKlpn85krck

First of all YAY and thank you!! My kids have been hounding me literally all weekend..."any new videos? When will there be new videos?" (Like I know???) You picked a beautiful and significant song...although I think you would have liked the Rivie Schwebel one much better. Regarding telling the grandchild his story--this song was written a generation ago, when I was a child. Around that time my grandfather moved in with us, he had had a stroke and needed 24 hour care. He would often wake up the whole house at night with his screaming nightmares. This was 50 years after the war. During the day, he never ever talked about his experiences. I would say the ones who did talk about it were probably a lot healthier. In any case yes, this was very much a part of our daily lives.

You’re right we are a very strong community and the holocaust is something that we talk about very often. A much larger concern is the world forgetting and therefore repeating it as opposed to is forgetting.

I have a very good suggestion for you he’s one of the best in todays Jewish music scene The video on you tube is called “hashamayim zanvil wienberger- Dirshu” you won’t regret it. Or “kegavno” by the same singer might be more fitting

Recommendation: Not the best representation of his voice, but this is an iconic song written by Abie Rothenberg in his albums "Dveykus". He is performing here with other stars you might recognize, but focus on the music. This is a lullaby (part of the prayer recited at bedtime), and his music and arrangement gives you goosebumps. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/imPZdaV-gr2Vmdk

If you would like to truly do a reaction on Abie Rotenberg; his music, lyrics, and voice, I recommend you reacting to this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2HcnqyerbR9fqM Its a song he composed a very long time ago, but its a newer video and he's collaborating with another singer, so that's two birds with one stone.

I wish I could find a better version of this, but I'm a huge fan of "Voices for Israel". It was pretty much "We Are the World" but in support of Israel, with singers from throughout the Jewish music spectrum getting together and singing as one. Highly recommend, just wish there was a live version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp3Gf5ihpLB2iqM

Wow, it's a pity you got set up to see this video, there were probably clearer videos and better versions to see. This was part of a concert. Abie Rotenberg is a prolific composer. He also composed Man from Vilna. A lot of his compositions are heavy, but thought provoking and poignant. I'll try to find a better song for you of Mordechai Ben David to watch - he is considered the King of Jewish Music, and I'm sure there are great videos of him to see.

I think it was pretty unfair to do this to you without warning. What a harrowing song. Many of us grew up knowing people whose parents had lost their spouse and children in the holocaust. I always wondered what it must have been like to know your mother or father (usually father) had invested all his hopes in a totally different family and kids before you were born- and they were gone and never mentioned. This song and video so well portrays that pain- looking at a grandchild and remembering another whose memory was smothered

As far as the voices (sorry for spamming) as people have said the quality is not good. But also, MBD and Avraham Fried are both power performers while Abie Rotenberg is known for his very soft and gentle compositions and voice. So this song is not the best vehicle for these voices.
