Statements by scores of fans saying to always go with the live version; you can't go wrong....I typically agree with, but with just a few exceptions; Shoemaker being one of them. This coming from a huge Nightwish fan and fan of all great music in general, as well as a longtime audiophile. Also, there are rare occasions when having a little backstory before diving in can pay huge dividends; and once again, Shoemaker is one of those songs. Written as a tribute by Tuomas to the famous planetary geologist/scientist Eugene Shoemaker, who died tragically while pursuing his passion. You can learn more in Wiki. Shoemaker's passion and renown paved the way to making him the only human to have his remains placed on the moon, so he could forever view endless Earthrises; a view he so deeply desired, but never realized in his lifetime. Just knowing this, coupled with the lyrics included with the OLV and the perfection of the production simply makes this tribute hit so much damn harder. Reverence with emotion. I cannot recommend enough you checking the OLV out on your own. You won't regret it one iota, Abi. Have a great day, and the next time you look up at the moon, please remember Shoemaker. 🌍🌠🌖😎

I don't really agree. I prefer the live version and I think you should NEVER hear the back story before your first listen. You can always read the back story and then listen again, but that first listen innocent of preconception can never come again.

@@TheRealRedAce I hear you, and generally agree. I'm talking about reactions to an extremely small percentage of songs I feel reactors (and their listeners, by extension) could benefit from a little context. There is no law stating all reactions must be totally blind. Reactions are opportunities to discover and entertain. I've seen way too many reactions where great songs were sent to either the meh bin or trash bin because someone just didn't get it. You like that? Personally, I end up walking away disappointed for the reactor, all the people watching, and mostly, the artist. And I also feel watching ended up being a waste of time. For many, time is precious. Remember...this is just my opinion and preference. I appreciate your opinion, and reactors gonna do what they want. I just want the best entertainment experience for everyone.

Troy playing his guitar with an E-Bow, giving that wailing sound 4:27 The song is about Eugene Shoemaker, the only earthling whose ashes were brought to the moon, the rocket that carried his urn landed/crashed in the crater named after him. The Shakespeare lines spoken during the song (By Joanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife) are also engraved on Shoemakers urn.

As this version might be more 'fun', the official lyric video is much, much better for getting all of the musical nuances and the video itself is certainly worth the viewing as together with the song it makes a wonderful piece of art. The random voice you were speaking about was Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife, and the male vocalist singing with Floor is Troy Donockley the Nightwish multi-instrumentalist from the UK. If you're just looking for fun then you've already done the right video but if you're looking for more musical depth, then the Official Lyric Video is the one you might want to watch...even if it's just on your own. Good job young lady!

From William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet": "And when he shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun." In the operatic part, Floor sings, "Laudato Si" (praise be to you) and "Ad Astra" (to the stars). The song is a tribute to Eugene Shoemaker. Shoemaker was a geologist and a pioneer in planetary science who studied impact craters. He and his wife were killed in a car accident. Some of his ashes were onboard the Lunar Prospector and carried to the moon for burial - he is the ONLY human buried on the moon.

Marco had left the band (about a year before I think due to medical issues and family matters). Troy, who has sung many times before on some songs, is singing here. He sings more on the new album. Troy also plays the low and high whistle (members of the flute family), and the Uilleann pipes among many instruments. You rarely see the camera focus on him when singing on stage during concerts for some reason. Perhaps because when Floor is singing she has priority. It might be different when they are not singing together.

Good reaction and right live version. 👍 Nightwish uses real symphony orchestras and choirs with the live playing in the background (they come from backing tracks). Everything said. The story has been already explained by the friends who came in early. Let me just be here and watch this with you. One of the best - and most poetic - inspirations by NIGHTWISH. Tuomas lately writes less about himself and more about humanity, and that makes the best of his creations even more heartfelt. In a way, I feel he is thus closer to himself than ever. This song is for the ages. Reportedly a hit at NASA as soon as it was released - of all places, one where you'd think people would reserve their emotions; not true, apparently, as with anyone who knew the man, or his legend. :)

Post reaction: it was great to witness again how Floor fills up that huge stage almost by herself... and you are still hit with everything they have. BUT, objectively, the sound is dimmed at best, especially the heavy parts were sharp and explosive on the original MV, revealing the unusual syncopated rhythm... and the cosmic part at the end was even more beautiful when it hit. Sonically, every of NIGHTWISH MVs for the "Human:||:Nature" album is worth listening to for exceptionally high quality. AND, the lyric videos are themselves little works of art.

Tuomas and Floor were not satisfied with the ending while recording. Floor tinkered with it at her home studio and with the choir added it became this masterpiece. Tuomas still had his doubts however that it could be done live. But Floor convinced him otherwise and the several live recordings since proves this without a doubt.

Great reaction to my number 5 song in my list of favorite Nightwish songs. A beautiful tribute to Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science. Eugene Shoemaker was especially known for the study of impact craters, both on the Moon and on Earth. After his death a small amount of his ashes were placed in a capsule and carried by NASA's Lunar Prospector mission and placed in the crater near the southern pole of the moon that bears his name. If you do a deep dive into the lyrics you will see some are written from the perspective of Shoemakers final resting place on the moon (Now you've been tucked in, For eternal earthrise and wonder). The spoken word section is a quote from Romeo and Juliet and was chosen by Shoemaker's wife to be inscribed on the capsule containing his ashes. It is spoken by Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela, a well known Finnish pop/folk singer with a beautiful voice. Checkout her work in Auri, Eye of Melian, and Altamullen Road. Taking Shoemakers ashes to the moon was especially fitting given that he was the geology principal investigator for the Apollo missions and also trained the Apollo astronauts on their geology tasks. He was consider for selection as an Astronaut but was medically disqualified. He had said that not going to the moon was one of the biggest disappointments in his life. One of the most difficult songs for Floor to sing with the rapid and dramatic pitch changes in the beginning while also having to get a lot of text out in short order. Tuomas said he deliberately challenged all three singers on the Human Nature album and Floor supposedly said where I am supposed to breathe when she first saw the music for Shoemaker. Tuomas wasn't sure they could perform it live but Floor insisted and it became one of the favorites on the setlist during the Human Nature tour in 2022-2023. I would highly recommend watching the lyric video as well. The visuals are so epic, especially the end where the Earth and the Sun disappear below the limb of the Moon as the song ends. Additionally you get Marko's voice in the harmonies of the chorus, your able to hear a lot more of the instrumentation in the breakdown, and you can really hear the other voices in the choir backing Floor's operatic lines in the end. I spent 15 years working for NASA as a flight controller for the International Space Station in Mission Control and this song always has a special place in my heart. I hope it continues to inspire people to continue to explore space and to push humanity out into the cosmos. Auri is a side project of Tuomas. Troy. and Johanna and is very chill mood/folk/Celtic music. My favorites are Desert Flower, The Space Between, and The Valley.

Well, seeing all the comments, I see that all your questions are answered. I'll just go ahead and throw in my traditional requests/recommendations for High Hopes and Walking in the Air. Walking in the Air, fits your request for something slow/southing but I'd also recommend Master Passion Greed and Song for Myself for something that hits a bit harder. Also a bit of advice. When it comes to 'Lives', not all concerts are created equal. Everything can set off a concert down a wrong direction. Especially when the sound engineers are so important. I've been to two Nightwish concerts and they both sucked. The worst one was at Exit in Novi Sad where I had to leave early because Anette's piercing voice triggered a migraine. When it comes to concerts, don't review lives done during the day. The daytime atmosphere creates for a hollow sound as compared to night. Of course, that's only for outdoor lives. Indoor lives are usually the best because it serves as a sudo studio. Nightwish did concerts in Mexico and Argentina that are considered to be the best. Other than those two the Wacken 2013 and the End of an Era 2005 concerts are just magical. And if you ever review Anette's versions, stick with the studio versions. Also, if you want to be a slobbering/crying mess, when you're laying down to bed and it's black all around you, play the studio version of Shoemaker through those headphones of yours.

So ,... Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program. He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission. The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ). Male who is singing is Troy Donockley "The Bard" (is an English composer and multi-instrumentalist most known for his playing of Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone). "Shoemaker" has become a favorite song of NASA's scientific community. Tuomas has a deep inclination towards science and this is reflected in many of his plays. This ensured the entry of Nightwish into the history books of science, several discoveries in the field being named after them. These new discoveries include: Alpenglow Rockshelter: Archaeological site named after Nightwish Song. Tanidromites Nightwishorun: New Crab species. Sciophila Holopaineni: New species of Mosquito found in Finland. Ophiomitrella Floorae: New species of Cretaceous brittle star named after Floor Jansen. Tmesisternus floorjansenae: new species of beetle named after Floor. Song from Human. :II: Nature and it is a Masterful Album !!!! NWSU/FloorFan/Epican/Ayreonaut/TWA/PauFan🤘😎🤘.

@@Abigirl_Reacts He also does the e-bow right after the piano part. The e-bow is a very interesting gadget used with an electric guitar. Makes it sound like a cello, because it replaces picking the strings. Instead it agitates them electromagnetically. It is also used in The Greatest Show on Earth in Wembley.

Is there a website where you can buy your lady the original outfits these women wear?

Floor's outfits are custom made for her by Royal Couture and Corsetry of Vienna so you can't just by them off the shelf. Occasionally Floor auctions off her stage outfits for charity.

It’s ’cause they’re not headlining so the coverage is shot “on the fly”, unlike a performance where they’re the main act and the director will have a plan in place before the day. One of the reasons why Deichbrand is a much better concert to watch from that year.

You really should consider how difficult this song is to sing. The fast-paced phrasing in the first part of the song is quite challenging and the full operatic ending is obviously hard work. The ending took several takes in the studio before they were somewhat happy with it and then Floor redid it in her home studio as the final version for the album. There aren't many metal singers that could perform this one live.

Just to be clear, what did I say to make you think I should consider this?

There was nothing you said. It's that one appreciates the performance even more when you realize how difficult this song is. Floor makes every song look easy even when they are not.

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned already, but I haven't the time to go over the comments at the moment - while most Nightwish is much better live, there are a few where the music/lyric studio performance video would give a different and possible better experience. this is one of those performances. Cheers!

Great performance, as always, but the director was so bad on this. Didn't show Troy singing backup vocals even once, didn't show either guitarist during the guitar solo (though they cut to Emppu right after it), and didn't show Floor during the vocal climax of the song. 😒
