Two German bands. Annenmaykantereit is the combination of the family names of the core members of one of the bands, which play in the first room. Henning May is the singer with the deep raspy voice. Giant Rooks is the band in the second room, where the first band joins them. Most original songs from annenmaykantereit are in German, but on their videos you will often find subtitles, if you care to watch them. Or else, look for the lyrics and google translate them- not always a guarantee for very precise translations, the original lyrics often have nuances and undertones that get lost in translation. They have done several covers of famous English songs with other bands. AMK are very big in Germany. They started busking in the streets in Cologne when they were still at high school, a friend of my eldest daughter was classmates with at least one of them. Henning has a nice solo video where he plays on a piano kerbside in the street, very basic production with bikes and cars slowly driving by in the residential narrow street, and the song is about a love story that went wrong, it’s called “Barfuss am Klavier”, literally “Barefoot on the piano”. Very German, and very different… Another classic is “Ich geh heute nicht mehr tanzen“ (“I won’t go dancing anymore tonight”), of which there are many different versions. The “Proberaum sessions” (“rehearsal room sessions”) provide an interesting musical experience with strings and brass sections added, but in a light and airy arrangement, nothing bombastic. The original song is from Suzanne Vega, who I believe is from New York (?). I’m less familiar with Giant Rooks, whose lead singer is providing the interesting contrast to Henning’s notorious “Tom Waits who can actually sing” voice, but I know that they sing in English.

Love these guys! Check AMK w/ Milky Chance doing a cover of Roxanne (orig by Sting). It's another great one. The first room was AMK w/ a few extras, the second room is Giant Rooks - and half way through AMK joins in the second room. I LOVED Suzanne Vega's version of this when she released it: this is completely different and every bit as good in my ears. Just love it. These guys are over-the-top creative.

They did several of these (btw live recorded one-takes) covers with a second band. you should give an ear to their versions of Roxanne together with Milky Chance and Can't get you out of my head with The Parcels. Marvellous is the word to say the least about it.Very lovely reaction, btw!

It's very interesting as a German to see someone from the US reacting to German music. 🙂 Never heard this song before (well, of course the original version from the late 80's/early 90's) - it sounds cool.

When you listen to Suzanne Vega sing this, make sure you her the version with the "DNA mix"? and her accapella version too. They are both good but the one with the music got the most airplay, and is said to be the song that was used to perfect mp3 compression, (see wiki).

@@Abigirl_Reacts Danish singer/pianist/songwriter. Her second album "Aventine" is absolutely haunting and if You decide one day to react to her music this particular song: "Agnes Obel - The Curse (Berlin Live Session)" might be great start. Nevertheless You could try it just for Yourself. She`s remarkable.

Good morning my dear! I love your reaction although I've got to agree with a few of the others, this is one of those cases where the OG needed, or at least needs to be listened to. Suzanne Vega, who I think is Paul Simon's wife (of Simon and Garfunkel). Great reaction, I guess it's just your smile in general, not just the Ren smile! 😊

Again, an absolute staple of millenial culture (like Dethklock) I just dont understand how you avoided the original your whole life. It was on MTV like 3 times a day when I was 6. Every radio station played it to death. Even REM covered (well, parodied) it.

The voices of the singers are definitely interesting. I kind of think they detract from this particular song, though. The original version of this, by Suzanne Vega is very stream of consciousness and understated in tone, especially compared to this cover. I’m not a fan of this, but I would be interested to hear them sing something else where their style and tone fits the song better.
