The riff/lick/hook to the song 'The Last Time' has always fascinated me. It is such a distinctive sound. According to Wikipedia: "Although "The Last Time" is credited to Jagger/Richards, the song's refrain is identical to "This May Be the Last Time", a traditional gospel song recorded in 1954 by the Staple Singers. In 2003, Richards acknowledged this, saying: "we came up with 'The Last Time', which was basically re-adapting a traditional gospel song that had been sung by the Staple Singers, but luckily the song itself goes back into the mists of time." The Rolling Stones' song has a main melody and a hook (a distinctive guitar riff) that were both absent in the Staple Singers' version. Phil Spector, whose "Wall of Sound" approach can be heard on the recording, assisted with the production. Footage still exists of a number of performances of this song by the Rolling Stones in 1965: from the popular BBC-TV music show , the 1965 Poll Winners Concert and American TV shows including and . A full live performance is also prominently featured in the 2012 re-edit of the 1965 documentary . The footage confirms that the rhythm chords and guitar solo were played by Keith Richards, while the song's distinctive hook was played by Brian Jones. In the August 1965 issue of , in reply to the question of "who plays the prominent figure on The Stones releases?", Keith Richards said "I played it on "Satisfaction", Brian played it on "The Last Time". It all depends who thinks it up. Obviously Brian Jones cannot reply to Richards' comments.

@William Morgan Thank you for that, never knew it. I don't think the public will ever know the truth about the circumstances surrounding Brian Jones tragic death. My wife gifted me for my birthday Keith Richards autobiography 'Life' that took me quite a long time to finish reading [547pages]. I found it a difficult read - a little all over the place type of thing, a bit dis-jointed if you will. Or was that me at the time? I think I'll read it again. I have since also read Jimmy Barnes [Cold Chisel - Australian rock band] two autobiographies; 'Working Class Boy', and the follow-up, 'Working Class Man' - also the title of his hit song. Now both those books were in comparison to Richards' 'Life', easier to read and understand. I have read several rock music artists autobiographies and biographies. They include; 'The True Adventures Of The Rolling Stones' authored by Stanley Booth. 'Hammer Of The Gods' - The Led Zeppelin Saga, authored by Stephen Davis, 'No One Here Gets Out Alive' - the long awaited biography of Jim Morrison with Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman. 'Jim Morrison - Dark Star' authored by Dylan Jones. 'The Doors' - authored by John Tobler & Andrew Doe. I read those books many years ago when I was in my 20s during the 1980s - I loved The Doors & Led Zeppelin. I also read 'New Order + Joy Division - Pleasures and Wayward Distractions, Revised Edition authored by Brian Edge. And finally 'U2 Stories For Boys - Revised Edition authored by Dave Thomas. And 'Unforgettable Fire' - The Story Of U2 authored by Eamon Dunphy. Most of those books I bought in London when I was there on my O.E. [overseas experience] from New Zealand in 1988. I bought the books home with me to New Zealand in my Hiking Pack. I love reading. Although I am nowhere near the level of a bookworm like my late father was. Back to The Rolling Stones - and in particular Brian Jones. I have always wanted to know what led to his early tragic death. Of course Jones' drug use has been well documented. However I am more interested in Jones' relationship psychology with the other members of The Rolling Stones and in particular Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. After what I have read, I wonder if the politics of song writing in The Rolling Stones and the politics within the band in general around the time of Jones' death influenced his death. I tend to believe it/they did. After Jones death it has been primarily the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards combination who have written the most songs. The combination is almost genius. As was the combination in The Beatles; John Lennon and Paul McCartney...I have always been fascinated with the ownership of songs in rock bands. In some bands the whole band owns the songs even though only 1 or 2 members may have written the songs. Song ownership is an incredibly powerful concept/thing. Ok I'll end my novel as it is leading to a very large can of worms and hole in the ground. Now when I listen to 'Midnight Rambler' and 'You Got The Silver' by The Rolling Stones, I'll know they contain Brian Jones final axe work and I will pause to remember the great man who was a forefather of the band.
