DON‘T and I say DON‘T turn off the file collection on save. This will set you up for data loss big time. Especially in music and with audio better have duplicates than relying on some 3rd party folder that might not be there in a couple of years. Have everything you need for a particular project as close as possible with that project. I am talking to you with 24+ years experience in music production here and also the pain of my early days when I did not mind where that one special sample was on my disk that is now gone and I was never able to reproduce the exact same way again. Don’t be me, collect your audio ALWAYS!

Hey, thanks for the comment. I agree with not turning it off, which is why I recommend turning it on to ask. I'm sorry if I'm wrong, but it seems you are confusing this setting with collect all and save. This is for copying files into your user library. I completely agree with the collect all save point. But for copying across to your user library, it's beneficial to set it to ask so you are not duplicating the live library content

Great tips and explanations. Looking at some of the comments, I'd point out that none of these are compulsory, but suggestions with explanations as to why you might follow them. So long as you understand why they are suggested, you can choose. Your own workflow might mean you would prefer to not follow a suggestion. But my understanding of these settings has just vastly increased in the last nine minutes and thirty three seconds! Thanks Craig.

Collect Files is not about the User Library, and saying that is weird considering what this does is clearly written on the screen while you're saying it. What this does is take files referenced from Library Locations - both the User Library AND the Stock Content in Ableton Live, but also samples from other folders on your machine, etc. and consolidate them under the project folder. This is pretty standard across DAWs, because content locations can easily be changed, which can break the loading of content when you load it on your iMac instead of your MacBook Pro, or on your PC instead of your Mac. What if your MBP has all the content on the System SSD, but your Mac Mini has a TB Dock with 2 NVMe SSDs in it where you put that content. What if the drive labels that you use on my Mac Studio differ from your MBP? What if you have a PC Desktop and a MacBook Pro Laptop? This is why this function is enabled by default, because it prevents file orphanage when moving projects to different systems or sending them to different users. **Users should keep then turned on, IMO. The creator misread the dialog and has misstated its purpose.** Ask is a viable option, but not if someone is misinformed of how the function actually works and chooses an option based on that misconception.

Thanks for your detailed explanation and for pointing this out! You’re absolutely correct that "Collect All and Save" pulls files from multiple sources, not just the User Library, including Stock Content, external folders, and more. I appreciate you clarifying how this feature consolidates files into the project folder to avoid broken links when switching devices or collaborating across setups. The point I was trying to emphasise in the video was how to avoid unnecessary duplication when saving presets, particularly when referencing files already within the User Library or Factory Packs. I'll make sure to be more precise in the future to avoid any confusion. Cheers for the constructive feedback! 😊

If you care about the playback quality of your recorded audio, you very likely DON'T want to set default warp mode to complex. Complex mode will process/alter the sound of the audio clip even if the tempo of the recorded audio matches the tempo of the set. That is, it's not 100% transparent when no warp is needed, as opposed to the other warp modes. (Same goes for complex pro, but that's not available as default anyway.)
@pushpatterns
@pushpatterns 20 күн бұрын
This is true; I always recommend turning warping off if you don’t need to adjust the pitch or time. However, the tip I’m suggesting is regarding the automatic record warp, which cannot be disabled in a setting.
@therealrydan
@therealrydan 19 күн бұрын
@@pushpatterns I understand you are talking about the setting, so am I. Also. No need to turn warp off for clips (since that also mean's you cant loop them.) Every single warp mode except complex and complex pro are 100% transparent when no warping is needed. You can easily verify this with a null test between warped/non-warped copy of the same clip. So, I still think the suggestion to set "complex" as default in settings is a really bad one. (It also means, unless you turn warp off every single time you consolidate, you get generation loss due to non-transparent complex mode being applied over and over again...)
@pushpatterns
@pushpatterns 19 күн бұрын
I see your point about the transparency of most warp modes when no stretching is applied, and you're absolutely right that Complex and Complex Pro aren't transparent, even if no warping is happening. For someone focused on maintaining the purest audio quality, this is definitely something to consider. That said, the reason I recommended setting Complex as the default in the video is because it’s often the most versatile option for many users. Especially those working with full tracks or complex harmonic material. It avoids needing to manually switch modes when stretching is required, which can save time in workflows that involve a lot of tempo manipulation. That being said, you bring up a great point about generation loss with repeated consolidations in Complex mode. For anyone consolidating regularly or who doesn’t need warp processing for most of their clips, defaulting to a transparent mode like Beats might be a better option. It’s definitely a trade-off between convenience and preserving absolute transparency. Thanks again for pointing this out! I’ll make sure to address this in a follow-up for viewers who might not have considered the implications of repeated processing. I really appreciate the discussion. It’s this kind of detail that helps everyone improve! 🙌

"Create analysis files" was annoying me, I recommend to disable it, it's not worth it for that couple seconds of project loading time... Every time a dragged and dropped an external sample it created a peak file next to that file. Later on I always have to delete these files manually, because I can't find a simple wav because of the mess ableton left behind... So like imagine, I have a 50 GB sample pack, I set it under "Places" within ableton, and whenever I preview a sample, ableton creates a peak file next to it. A few years later, I'm looking into the folders of my sample pack and I face many of these trash files, already irrelevant...I've been reinstalled windows 2 times by then... These files should be stored in a unified cache folder like reaper does it, or anywhere in %Appdata% I don't care... The user don't have to be bothered with this kind of technical things... Ableton... Just... just work FFS 🙄🙄
