Join us for this insane lightning storm. We can’t seem to escape the bad Bahamas weather this season. It is interesting talking to a lot of other cruisers, they have all said the same thing… This is a bad weather season. Of course we still have a good time and we are grateful to have the boat that we do, but boy it is still freaky at times. We thought we would outrun the upcoming weather by leaving Staniel Cay and heading straight to Georgetown. If you are unfamiliar with the geography of Georgetown in the Exumas, it is a mostly protected on all sides of the anchorage type of place. However, and as life will have it, the storm decided to bring the wind, waves and lightning right into the heart of our anchorage! We saw 50kt winds and about a million bolts of lightening with accompanying thunder. You will have to watch next weeks video to see the damage this storm caused. It is surprising. Join us every Sunday at 9am ET for new weekly videos!
Cheers

Very suspenseful video you guys and so well done. We stared at that anchor pattern for ages and saw the drag on the wind change but hoping it held at the end there. Those "light bulb" storms are nasty. We've been in many, winds are crazy and strikes everywhere. Wow. No one needs that. You both do so well. Well done.

My wife and I were on our boat in Georgetown within a quarter mile of you. And I will agree, that was A LOT of lightening. The winds weren't bad, but it rained in buckets. Earily quiet after the storm passed. No wind and flat sea. When the rain started I went out with a bucket of soapy water to wash the decks. When the lightning came I was in awe

I was in Columbia River in dry suit, helping sailboaters learn about "Life Sling" overboard devise. Sailboats are raising me out of the water by main line mast, so I'm connected to masthead by steel cable. I'm looking up the cable to top of mast when I see lightening strikes mast head. Lightening strikes sent sparks in huge circle of light. In that light I'm seeing mast head antenna's being snapped from mast a falling onto the sailors an deck. I expected to be electrocuted any second watching flash come down cable. I'm hearing my friends apologies because I warned him of storm, we should not have been out there in Columbia River navigating downed trees floating down current. An it was me that lightening struck!

Nice lighting storm. I love boats but I would have been on land if I could have been. Here in Central Texas lately we have had some bad ones. Heck at 0333 this morning I was blown out of bed by lighting and thunder it hit real close. Been going on for around a month off and on. More on than off, with hail and tornado's around. Wishing you and yours a super blessed week.

Every time the waves are 1-2 ft, and it starts raining or God forbid there is lightning, you guys go from enjoying your boat to a panic mode. It must be difficult to enjoy the life around you if it causes you so much stress. With three kids, and one more on the way, two dogs and boat maintenance, and navigation I wonder from time to time if it is all worth it. I follow about 30 sailing/cruising channel and you probably have the most competent boat and usually tucked in some safe anchorage or marina as compared to others in remote parts of the world out at sea but yet display the most worry and fear. As someone who has long contemplated a similar lifestyle you have made me re-think my choices because you guys always leave me wondering if your worries and concerns are justified and others under worst circumstances are oblivious to the risks around them. You are not floating around on a life raft. You are in a well equipped Nordavn trawler. Extra cautions or measured paranoid. Which is it?

From watching this ( and others) from the beginning I find that the one who are the most cautious are the ones who are trying to protect a family. I think what comes across sometimes as fear is a parent who realizes that risks are totally different for them and for their children. When Brayden doesn’t have the rest of the family onboard he does not seem as concerned about the weather, still gets informed, but willing to take more of a beating than when the whole family is their. It appears to me that they usually are not concerned about overall safety but comfort or injury from falls in rough weather. I could be wrong, just an observation. Sailors who through caution to the wind , end up on the front pages. Not usually a good thing. Love the channel, you are raising your kids to be very capable young adults ( soon) that will have an education background that very few have. Bravo. 💓

I think you might be mistaken…. To be honest we never go into panic mode… there are times that we are cautious and for good reason, we have a lot to loose. Many of the sailing channels you see have crappy boats and no kids. Might sound rude but it’s true.

Pretty cool storm . Seems like there should be away of taking all the electronics out or disconnecting them from the main wires on the boat . Perhaps some electrical engineer will come up with a solution for all that and make a great sum of money doing so

Lightening is frightening and dangerous. We had a strike in the back yard about 50 feet from the house(missed all of the trees and struck an empty plain of grass) the noise was deafening and a few small electronic gizmos were fried, a digital phone and one modem. A but closer in circumstances to your situation we were in the Canadian side of the 1000 Island’s Area when during the night a sudden lightening squall hit. High winds and absolutely fierce thunder and a real fireworks show. Most boats were docked or tied up in a marina, we rented our boat for the week and were leaving that day. I never saw a boating community so stirred up and most of Northern NY had no power, the Canadian side had power. I learned that day to absolutely respect the power of a storm. Glad all ended up well.

Some people feel that having an active current going up ti mast to the anchor light might attract a strike. Fact is, no one knows. Personally, I don’t think so. I have been in heavy lightning in Costa Rica and offshore of Gutamala/El Salvador. Never struck. At anchor in Playa Coco, an unattended and somewhat derelict sailboat not 50 yards behind my 50 foot ketch (45 foot main mast.) took a hit to its’ vhf antenna which evaporated. That bolt of lightning went over my boat to hit that mast. Why My boat didn’t get it I don’t know, but it sounded like a sonic boom right over us. Fate/luck determine what happens to you when you leave the known for the unknown. If that is not acceptable to you, stay home and watch KZbin.

I don’t understand why fiberglass boats don’t have real lightning protection. I’m talking about real lightning rods, multiple down conductors to real grounding plates in the water.

Ok, why is older daughter hiding from camera? She is a pretty girl. Even if it is a zit breakout, tell that child she is beautiful and is loved. and her fans worldwide love her. BTW, it is not the worst lighting storm, and you were not in violet seas at the time, however, lightening is dangerous and frightening for kids. My kids would have been in a closed closet the entire time. Thanks for video.
