Most of the people who own these old estates in the UK seem eccentric. James is the most eccentric homeowner I have seen on this show.

James is what you’d call a functioning depressive. It’s like he’s nearly there for connection, but something continues to hold him back. Adding to that with the traumatic burglary, I am proud of him for keeping it together for so long. He seems misunderstood. He’s obviously smart, funny, and passionate about history and antiques, and he’s had some difficulty in his life. James, wherever you are, I hope you are well.

Are you KIDDING!? A 1 b/r apartment in NYC and $2,100 - $2,400 in London is what it costs per month right now, for what James is paying to live in a mansion. He's paying less than $2,000 mo. to keep the place up - and complaining about it (!?) Migod, people get real, this is 2022 not 1902 - where else does he think he can live for that amount? I'm flabbergasted by the unreality of the VERY modest cost for running such a place, and everybody seems to be outraged at the amount. A most rude and disagreeable man - don't know why Ruth bothered with him.

I looked this up and it seems it was not a happy outcome. In 2011 after this show aired the house was broken into and the owner held hostage as the house was robbed. Afterward the owner sold the house to a man named Graham Oliver (not the godson the old owner had talked about) . If you type in the halls name you can find the website from the new owner. It is sad that I could find no record if the house's amazing collection of treasures stayed with the house .

The following year, James sold the house to people who he thought would take good care of it. This surprised me at first but he mentioned robbery when showing the lock of hair to Ruth. If it was the armed robbery that others mentioned in the comments, maybe it made him feel unsafe living in the house and he started thinking about selling the place at that time. It would explain why he decided not to follow Ruth's advice after first showing enthusiasm. What was the point if he was thinking about leaving soon? He could leave all that work to the new owners.

As a maximalist and owning an eclectic collection (in far smaller scale cause I leave in an apartment) myself, totally understand his passion on preserving these exquisite interiors. Reception rooms are splendid but dusty, storage areas too cluttered and rather a hoarder's nest... I believe he changed his attitude towards Ruth cause he had already decided in his mind to sell this property (sold next year). A smaller house would be more manageable for a bachelor in his age.

According to BBC News, 21 March 2012, there was an attempted robbery and Cartland had managed to "raise the alarm and the intruders fled, leaving some of his antiques in the garden." Re. its current ownership, from the house website: "Graham Oliver adored Carnfield from the moment he set eyes on it in 2010, and although [partner] Heidi took longer to persuade, James Cartland knew his home needed a female touch and the motivation of a man who shared his passion and love of the house. It soon became clear to James that this couple were ideal. Having also uncovered much of the history of Carnfield, James lured Graham and Heidi into his excitement of the hall, and in March of 2011, he sold the Hall to Graham Oliver." Who knows what happened between Mr. Cartland and his godson, given his somewhat mercurial temperament depicted in the episode. There are numerous articles about the house, its owners and activities, and its ghosts if one googles Carnfield Hall.

No idea how old the following information is, but from the website: _Now James Cartland has moved on to Ashbourne (with all of his wonderful artifacts) and has handed over the serious responsibility of Carnfield Hall to Graham Oliver, an eminent and ground breaking orthopaedic vet. Graham lives with his partner Heidi and her dog Cuthbert, who is lovingly known as Custard by some. The next project is to restore the woodland which hasn’t been touched for over one hundred years. Three fishponds, one medieval and the others probably dating back to at least 1600 are totally silted up and full of undergrowth. Financial help will be needed. They are shown on the earliest plan of 1693 and the walks and trails on later plans. In May the bluebells stretch for a shimmering mile. It is hoped to be able to open this to the general public in the future._

Commenting from the far future of 2022: James is clearly a bit fragile, a bit disconnected. There's very little difference between him and a hoarder living out of a shipping container filled with junk. Eventually I assume he'll withdraw from the world completely and that will be that. I feel bad for his godson.

@@MsMesem Originally, it had been James' wish to bequeath the estate to his godson. But I don't think the godson could be prepared to take care of such a huge responsibility. And now James has moved out & sold it anyway.

I enjoy this content. Iam also attrached to cha nel showing abandoned mansion estate. Sometimes the abandoned places have a good portion of the contents included. Comparing this channel with the abandoned channels, like "brothers of decay", I can see how the egotistical, greedy & proud, stubborn people die or move on, without regard for relatives of the furture. Oh well. Material wealth is curious, indeed.

I love antiques and old houses full of them, but not in the way this house is, ( it would look amazing with one quarter,or less, of the things it currently has), but it's his house and he likes it the way it is, fair enough. I guess this guy wanted a miracle when he claims he expected Ruth to tell him how to make money, because obviously he wasn't willing to do anything to accomplish that... Some people don't deserved nor they want to be helped.

I've watched many of Ruth Watson's 'Abode' videos and I think that she has very good ideas but often her method of communication can come across as rather 'rough' and nagging. Perhaps James Cartland is correct - charm school would be useful for polishing her demeanor!

He reminds me of a horder although with style and knowledge. Its unfortunate that he's reticent about cataloguing his collection. As a collector myself I know how important it is that the various items I've collected are properly tagged and a detailed appraisal done. It would be horrible if after I'm gone these things ended up undervalued in some yard sale and the knowledge of what they are lost forever.
